Paul and Lorie Billehus, lifelong residents of Pope County, were named the 2025 Heritage Days Grand Marshals, recognizing their deep-rooted commitment to the Starbuck community.
The couple, married since 1957, has made significant contributions to education and local organizations. Lorie, a former teacher at Starbuck Elementary, later earned a master’s degree in special education and moved into administration. At 89, she continues to serve as secretary and treasurer of the Starbuck Depot Society, a role she has held since its founding in 1986. Her community involvement extends to the Starbuck Study Club and Minnewaska Lutheran Home.
Paul, who grew up on his family’s Century-plus farm, served on the school board for over a decade. He dedicated many years to the Shriners, raising funds for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Paul was also a longtime member of the “Card Room,” a group that met regularly to play cards and discuss town events. Both Paul and Lorie have been active members of Fron Lutheran Church for over 70 years, contributing their time and talents in numerous ways. “Their commitment to education, community organizations, and local initiatives has left a lasting impact on Starbuck and the surrounding area,” commented Tom Beuckens as he presented the honor.
The annual event conducted a brief business meeting led by Chamber President Karen Tharaldson. The new officers for 2025 are President Amy Camp, Vice President KaDee Hippe, Secretary Jodee Lund, and Treasurer – nonboard member – Tom Beuckens. The Board of Directors includes Camp, Patty Glomstad, Jennifer Tolifson, Kristie Taffe, Lund, Heather Gaston, Jackie Hill, and Hippe.
Dawn Roen and Michelle Ehrenberg delivered a business spotlight presentation for Minnewaska Community Health Services (MCHS), showcasing the organization’s journey and comprehensive healthcare services. Founded in 1958 as the Minnewaska Lutheran Home, MCHS has grown from an original facility with 38 residents to a healthcare provider serving multiple communities across Minnesota. The organization has undergone significant expansions, including additions in 1970, 1972, 1974, 1989, and 2005. Key milestones include the establishment of Minnewaska Therapy, the construction of Holly Ridge Manor in 1989 with 20 assisted living units, and recent expansions in 2018 that added facilities in Hoffman and an addition to Holly Ridge Manor. MCHS now operates facilities in multiple locations, including Starbuck, Hoffman, and Walnut Grove, offering a range of services such as:
•Assisted Living
•Memory care
•Independent living
•Skilled Nursing
•Therapy services
As a non-profit, faith-based organization affiliated with nine local Lutheran churches, MCHS remains committed to providing person-centered care that encourages individuals to reach their highest potential. Board member Linda Hoffmann aptly summarized the organization’s community significance, noting, “We are very fortunate to have them in our community.”
Chris and Kristie Taffe of Starbuck were awarded the Rising Star Award, recognizing their significant contributions to the community over the past few years. The couple, parents to Mackenzie and Carter, have rapidly established themselves as community leaders. Chris Taffe, who founded his own business at age 24, served as Chamber of Commerce president and now sits on the city council. He also volunteers on various community boards.
Kristie Taffe, formerly a veterinary technician, has launched her own business in Starbuck. She volunteers for several committees, organizes events for the Miss Minnewaska Program, and contributes to local events and downtown beautification efforts. The Taffes’ commitment to Starbuck’s development is evident in their donation of a bike repair station at the Starbuck Depot and their involvement in the Dragon Boat Races. Their efforts exemplify the spirit of the Rising Star Award, which celebrates recently established businesses and individuals making a notable impact in their communities.
In presenting the award, Jodee Lund shared, “The Rising Star Award celebrates the Taffes’ leadership, dedication, and passion for making a positive difference in Starbuck. Their efforts have helped shape a brighter future for the town and its residents, embodying the spirit of community service and civic engagement. The Taffes’ goal is to make Starbuck a better place to live, and the community’s goal is to keep them there. Their recognition inspires others to contribute to the town’s development and foster a sense of belonging for all residents.”
Julianne Amundson was awarded this year’s Community Service Award for her four decades of commitment to enhancing the lives of Minnewaska Lutheran Home residents. “Each year, we strive to recognize an individual who goes above and beyond in their community service,” said Ann Beuckens, who presented the award. “Julie has been enlightening our community for 40 years, and her dedication is remarkable.”
As the Resident Activity Program coordinator, Amundson plans and schedules musicians, volunteers, and special events ensuring seamless implementation and communication. Her approach is personalized, and she interviews residents to understand their preferences and interests.
Beyond her role at the Lutheran Home, Amundson is an active Minnewaska Community Health Service Auxiliary member, contributing to major yearly fundraisers such as Heritage Days in July and the annual Bazaar. Beuckens praised Amundson’s community involvement: “Julie is always willing to assist with community activities, from Dragon Boat Races to 5k races, to Heritage Day events. She’s always there with a smile and a passion for serving.”
Colleagues describe Amundson as a “shining light” whose calm and consistently cheerful personality inspires all around her. “Julie is a remarkable person and the best activity professional on the planet,” Beuckens added. “Minnewaska Community Health Services and the community of Starbuck are truly blessed to have her.”
Marlene Hippe was honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award, recognizing her decades of service to the Starbuck community. The award was presented by Linda Hoffmann, who highlighted Hippe’s extensive contributions, “Marlene has been a pillar of our community for over 50 years,” Hoffmann said. “Her dedication to Starbuck is evident in every aspect of her life, from her 34-year teaching career to her ongoing volunteer work.”
Hippe’s service spans multiple areas of community life. She has served as a Sunday School teacher, music director, and WELCA president at her church. She has also been active on the church council and in various bible study groups. Hippe taught at Starbuck and Minnewaska schools from 1971 to 2005. She was Starbuck’s first girls’ basketball coach and has remained supportive of local sports teams long after retirement.
“Marlene’s impact extends far beyond the classroom,” Hoffmann noted. “She continues to touch lives through her volunteer work at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home and the Starbuck Depot.” Hippe is an active auxiliary member at the nursing home, baking traditional Norwegian treats for events and assisting with residents’ needs. Her involvement with the Starbuck Depot includes making rømmegrøt and volunteering for various community celebrations. Hippe has also been a longtime member of the Starbuck Study Club, taking on leadership roles and participating in community projects. Her commitment to local charities and willingness to help others were also highlighted.
“Whether it’s organizing vendors for Heritage Days or caring for her grandchildren, Marlene embodies the spirit of community service,” Hoffmann concluded. “Her kindness and dedication have made Starbuck a better place for all of us.”
