Minnewaska Area Schools is embarking on a bold initiative to shape its next strategic roadmap, and the district is inviting community members to participate in the process.
MAS Superintendent Chip Rankin has outlined key areas of reinvestment and potential reimagining of school facilities to ensure they meet the evolving needs of students and the community, it was stated in a recent news release.
“Our facilities are aging, and while some structures remain relevant, others require significant updates,” Rankin stated. “We need to look at areas such as capacity, enrollment, safety, security, curriculum, activities, and community use.”
Key focus areas include:
•Auditorium Upgrades: Addressing the aging infrastructure, including seating that has deteriorated over three decades.
•HVAC System Improvements: Updating outdated heating and air systems to improve efficiency and comfort.
•Pool Evaluation: Assessing the financial and practical sustainability of the school’s swimming pool.
•Parking Lot Reconstruction: A necessary replacement project estimated at $4.5 million.
•Enhanced Security Measures: Implementing secure entrances and better access controls to improve student and staff safety.
•Modernized Learning Spaces: Transforming outdated media centers and industrial tech areas to align with current educational and workforce demands.
Additionally, the district is exploring two major new projects:
•Community Activity Center: A multi-purpose facility featuring a walking track, fitness space, and courts for various activities, accessible to residents.
•Environmental Learning Center: A visionary space integrating education with the natural environment, capitalizing on the district’s proximity to Lake Minnewaska.
Rankin emphasized the importance of community feedback in determining priorities, stating, “We take taxpayer dollars seriously and want to invest in what our community values most.”
A survey will be distributed in April to all residents of Pope County, gathering input on these proposed initiatives.
The district is considering a special election in November to seek voter approval for funding the proposed projects. Importantly, Rankin noted that Minnewaska Area Schools maintains the lowest residential tax rate in the region, ensuring any tax impact remains minimal.
