From March 19, 1915
A committee of stockholders consisting of Edward Engebretson, C.T. Kirkwold and A.F. Peterson, butter maker of the local creamery, went on a trip of inspection the first of the week to gain information in regard to a new creamery building. They visited creameries at Swanville, Osakis and Sauk Centre. They will make their report at a special meeting of the stockholders to be held on the 28th of this month. Professor Mortenson of the state creamery at Albert Lea will be present. Professor Mortenson is one of the best posted men in the creamery business in the state.
The big attraction at the Du Glada last week was a comedy drama entitled “What Happened to Ole.” As usual with dialect plays, it drew a full house. The Du Glada advertises: “The House for Motion Pictures, Vaudeville and Dramatic Productions.”
On Monday, a deal was made by which Ole Troy bought William J. Lund’s pool room. Mr. Troy will move his fixtures into the building occupied by Mr. Lund as soon as repairs have been made. Mr. Troy will do away with the lunch room and enforce the ordinance against minors more rigidly than ever.
Report for School District No. 74 for the month ending March 12, 1915: Enrollment, 24; average daily attendance, 20. The following received certificates for perfect attendance: Catherine and Violet McIver, Edwin Tangen and Melvin Sansness. Visitors were Inga Hippe and Mrs. John McIver.

Leonard Pederson and John Evjen went to the Cities last week and brought up two new trucks with oil tanks for the Starbuck Oil company. The new trucks are painted blue. Mr. Pederson has a route running southwest, and Mr. Evjen running southeast. Milo Hagen has route north and northwest, and Ole Larson one west.
Ole Vinge of Blue Mounds received some bad cuts about the face and head when his wagon tipped over on what is known as the Brevig grade on Highway 38 on Monday. His team became frightened at a passing car and veered so near the side of the road that the hub of one of the wheels was caught on a guard rail post and overturned the wagon. The team ran away, and one of the wheels passed over Mr. Vinge.
The beginner’s violin class meets for rehearsal at 7:00 o’clock in the Fron church parlors. Over 20 boys and girls have joined the class. M.P. Eidberg is assisting in training the violin players, and Ed Olson has charge of cornets.
Beyer Aune visited his brother Martin and family from Saturday until Tuesday. Mr. Aune has been in Washington, D.C., since January, and is returning to Newell, S.D., where he is employed by the government.

Farmers and teams will be hired by the state highway department to drag secondary roads which will not support motorized equipment during the spring break-up.
Levine Tollefson left on Monday for Thief River Falls where he has accepted position as manager of a large sheep and turkey ranch. His brother Alfred has taken over his trucking business.
Times are getting better, and farmers in this territory have high hopes of getting a good crop this year, which is indicated by the fact that the, Starbuck Cement Products Co., has sold 15 new silos up to noon on Tuesday of this week.
The weather has been very mild the past week. On Friday the temperature was over 50 degrees. The side roads have been almost impassable and the highway is also soft in places. Wednesday it rained, hailed, lightened and thundered.
The Land O’Lakes Creameries this week announced that Floyd Thompson, butter maker at the Starbuck Creamery won first place in Dist. 13 in the efficiency contest for 1934, with a score of 98.70.
A large number of relatives and friends gathered at the East Zion church parlors last Sunday to honor Mr. and Mrs. Anton Berge on their silver wedding anniversary.

The list of registrants from Starbuck will leave for Fort Snelling March 24 for examination: Ervin Barsness, Wesley Johnson, Alfred Aaberg, Melvin Aaberg, Richard Schroeder, Ernest Hoium and Wallace M. Dahlseng.
The following will repeat the vows of Holy Baptism at the Indherred Lutheran Church Sunday: Elaine Iverson, Gladys Erickson, Alice Arneson, Dora Rosten, Ann Teigen and Ellsworth Erickson.
Confirmation services will be held at Fron Lutheran Church Sunday. The class members are: Marjorie Erickson, Pearl Sylvia Hagen, Adeline Harriet Larson, Ruby Ellen Larson, Doris Lucille Larson, Marilyn Zella Peterson, Audrey Mae Stedje, Marlys Westby, Edward Gilman Aaberg, Howard Hjalmer Berg, Harold Jerome Disrud, Paul Donald Gorder, Charles Leroy Hendrickson, Gladys Leonora Rud and Carl Blixseth Heggestad.
Pfc. Gordon Harstad, 20, was wounded in action in Germany on February 20 according to word received from the war department on Friday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.M. Harstad of Hoff township. He is now in a hospital in England.

Miss Margaret Ellen Nali, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Nali, became the bride of Earl Wayne Grenson of Starbuck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Grenson, on March 12, 1955, in the Immanuel parsonage by Rev. G.O. Forde. The bride’s only attendant was her sister, Norma Nali. The groom’s attendant was Robert Disrud of Minneapolis. Both the bride and groom attended Starbuck High School. The groom is now employed as a bookkeeper at C.R. Leeds in Minneapolis, where they are now making their home.
The Herman Johnsons have received word that their son Gene arrived in England, about 60 miles from London, last Saturday. He will spend three months there, returning to the states in June.
The children of the upper grades of School Districts 3 and 92, several of the parents and the teachers, Mrs. Walter Gilbertson and Mrs. Ruth Lachelt, chartered a bus a took an educational tour in Minneapolis on Friday.
The Pleasant Hill Troopers held their monthly meeting at the Magnus Troen home on Tuesday evening, March 15. The meeting was called to order the president, Ronny Lee. A member ship committee was appointed, consisting of Edward Arneson, Alice Kyvig, Hannah Troen and Larry Kirkwold. Two singing directors chosen were Mrs. Casper Anderson and Mrs. Walter Gilbertson. -Audrey Gilbertson, reporter.

Starbuck area residents are still digging out in the aftermath of one of the worst storms in history. The snowfall began on Tuesday, March 16, reached the peak on Wednesday, with from 10 to 12 inches of snow, and high winds up to 70 miles an hour. Fortunately, temperatures remained above zero during the daytime. The snowfall eased off on Thursday, but with winds up to 50 miles an hour, it was still a blizzard. The wind finally died down on Friday, and the temps dropped. Readings for the last three mornings have been 10 degrees below zero.
Donald Lund, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Lund of Starbuck, who has been employed by the Alcoa Co. at Lakeside, California the last ten years, has been promoted to sales manager by the company in the Chicago, Ill. district, effective March 1. He and his family plan to move to Chicago as soon as school is out.
Jane Marie, the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bardal, Minneapolis, was baptized on Sunday at the Indherred church by Rev. James Sumption.
Funeral services for Lars Teigen were conducted at the Indherred Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 13, with Rev. Sumption officiating. Mr. Teigen is survived by his wife, one daughter, Ann (Mrs. Carl Lee), three sons, Ragnar, Howard and Dewey; ten grandchildren; three brothers and two sisters in Norway.
Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Gorder are the parents of a baby boy, James Richard, born March 18.
Miss Evelyn Forsman; daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wiliam Forsman of Eveleth, became the bride of Marvin Maanum, son of Mrs. Edward Maanum of Starbuck, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Minneapolis on Dec. 19, 1964, the Rev. J.A. Nestingen officiating. The bride was attended by her sister, Mrs. Thomas Dickovick and Miss Sylvia Maanum. The groom’s attendants were Vern Maanum and Dennis Jacobson.

In one of the worst snowmobile accidents recorded in Minnesota, three young Douglas County residents lost their lives last Friday evening while all three were riding on one snowmobile. Involved in the accident were Dale Haabala (age 15), son of the Roger Haabalas, rural Farwell; James Overstad (age 15), son of the Herbert Overstads, rural Holmes City; and Duwayne Hoefer (15), son of the Walter Hoefers, rural Farwell. As they attempted to cross Highway 55, a bulk milk truck, proceeding in a westerly direction on highway 55, hit the snowmobile carrying the three persons.
Bonnie Klevann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Helmer Klevann of Starbuck, and James Lerberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lerberg of Elgin, Illinois were united in marriage on Oct. 12, 1974 at St. John’s Lutheran Church or rural Starbuck.
A total of 337 students will be graduating from Mankato State College on Friday, March 21. Among them will be Linda I. Berge, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Berge, rural Starbuck. Miss Berge will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work and also ranks high in her class scholastically graduating with Cum Laude honors.

The Ralph Ranum family of Starbuck has been named the Farm Family of the Year from Pope County. Ralph and Jackie have three children, Robert, 16, Rochelle 14 and Rachel 10.
For the second time, the foreclosure sale of Jim and Gloria Langman’s 480 acre farm west of Starbuck was postponed. Pope County Sheriff Gerald Moe was unable to conduct the sale to an estimated five hundred supporters shouting, “No sale, no sale!” for over an hour. Sheriff Moe was unable to reach the courthouse to conduct the sale, thus two arrests were made without incidents for obstructing legal process.
Sharon and Dwight Anderson of Mosinee, Wisconsin are the parents of a daughter, Emily Nichole born March 13.
Four members from Starbuck’s unbeaten Pheasant Conference Champion team were selected to the loop’s All-Conference squad. They are LaDona Anderson, Tammy Owen, Brenda Holten and Jan Doty.
Starbuck’s Doug Toivonen and Craig Pederson were named to the 1984-85 Pheasant Conference All-Conference team this past week. Mike Syverson also received recognition as he was named to the Honorable Mention team.

The MAHS Laker girls cheerleaders were pictured proudly displaying the State Basketball Sportsmanship Award banner that was presented to the Minnewaska Lakers at award ceremonies at Williams Arena following the Class A championship game last Saturday afternoon.
Starbuck Elementary third and sixth graders got to exhibit their creative talent at the Annual Inventors Fair held recently at the Starbuck Elementary School. The students competed for the opportunity to advance to the regional competition held in Fergus Falls in May. Twenty winners were selected – twelve from sixth grade and eight from the third grade. The sixth grade winners are Stacy Chan, Melissa Henderson, Erika Danielson, Sharon Mitchell, Cody Campbell, Amy Baukol, Lindsay Lehtola, Sarah Fredrickson, Chris Nelson, Katie Stammer, Adam Wink and Andy Holmes. Third grade winners are Erik Peterson, Isaac Thomas, Ashley Holte, Amber Aaberg, Lisa Thompson, Jonathan McIver and Lindsey Wesen. Third grade honorable mention are: Casey Boutain, Angie Pederson, Kayla Kennedy, Ashley Larson, Cody May and Josh Timm.

Kindergartners at Starbuck Elementary School were busy strutting their stuff in Easter productions. Students in classes taught by Marlene Kennedy and Mary Kay Fredrickson were on stage in front of parents, grandparents and others Wednesday and Friday afternoon. Mrs. Fredrickson’s class performed “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” while Mrs. Kennedy’s class has several offerings including “Little Red Hen,” “Lion and Fox,” and “Peter Cottontail”
Clarence and Elsie Jones (nee Hanson) of Starbuck celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on March 16, 2005. The couple wed on March 16, 1955 in Phoenix, Arizona. They have four children, eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Leonard Buysse of Starbuck were held Friday, March 18, 2005 at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck with Rev. Philip Reimers officiating. Leonard died on Sunday, March 13, 2005 at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, having lived to reach the age of 75 years. He is survived by his wife Ardis Buysse of Starbuck; one son, Gary (Denise Beck) Buysse of Blaine; two grandsons, Ryan Beck-Buysse and Ethan Beck-Buysse of Blaine; and his mother, Myrtle Buysse of Starbuck. He was preceded in death by his father.

In just a few days, the cast and crew of Minnewaska Area High School’s production of The Music Man will pull back the curtains and hit the stage running…and singing…and dancing. Public performances are set for Saturday, March 28, Sunday, March 29. Director Gordy Moeller said there are more than 100 youth involved in the play either on stage or as part of the backstage and tech crews, orchestra, set construction and art design. “Rehearsals have gone really well,” he said. “The people of the area should be proud of the talent our kids have. I’m really proud of the kids an how hard they have worked.”
The Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) group members were pictured in the Times. They were Courtney Erickson, Grant Hitchcock, Blair Anderson, Hunter Dougherty, Drew Opdahl, Jordyn Roggenkamp (Vice President), Greta Serrin (Media Coordinator), Michael Maus (President), 9-12th grade SADD Advisor Denise Dougherty, Ryan Majerus (Student Volunteer Services Coordinator) and Tobacco Free Communities and Horizon Public Health Educator Rebecca Zwonitzer, Treyson DeJager, Mary Wuollet, Colin Richards and Collin Stumpf. The group asked those who passed by to stand up to tobacco companies on Thursday, March 19.
