From April 2, 1915
In a statement for publication, made in Berlin, the first he has issued since the war began, Emperor William of Germany emphatically declared the present war was not of his seeking. Kaiser William declared he will see it through to the end, and said that victory must eventually come to the German colors.
The Times is in receipt of an invitation to the graduation exercises of the Minneapolis Business College, sent by George Fossen, who graduates from the college on April 9.
Last Friday evening, the home talent play, “Jerry the Tramp,” was given at the Du Glada theatre. The play was a splendid success, and was repeated last night for those who had been unable to see it the first night. After the show, a banquet dinner was served at the Minnewaska hotel for the cast, the orchestra, and others who had assisted with the program. Edberg’s orchestra furnished music between acts, and the Misses Cora Fossen and Clara Hoijum gave an exhibition of club swinging. The following constituted the cast: Lyla Olson, Mrs. Carl Nelson, Gina Dyrstad, William Merrill, W.C. Torgersen, Dr. W.W. Larson, A.R. Schultz, Carl Nelson. Mrs. George Hughes directed the play.

Miss Esther Weikert and Frank Wilson were married in St. Paul last Saturday, according to announcements received here this week. The bride has been a teacher in the local school for the past two years.
The schoolhouse in District 37, known as the Brenden school, was burned down Sunday afternoon. It was believed the fire originated from ashes which had been thrown out near the building. The entry was in flames when the fire was discovered. All the books and desks were saved. Work was started on a temporary building in a few days, so very little school time will be missed.
Announcements were received here this week that a baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. G.F. Bergquist (Hilda Brenden) last week at Faribault.

C.M. Pederson and B.R. Hagen, who have formed the partnership Pederson & Hagen are now located in their new office in the old Chevrolet garage. Their business will consist of real estate, farm loans, all kinds of insurance, monuments and Maytag washers.
The following young people will renew their baptismal vows at Fron: Manda Amundson, Lorraine Billehus, Evelyn Bredeson, Pearl Eidberg, Eunice Erickson, Pearl Erickson, Alfield Forbord, Mertis Fosse, Adaline Gaarder, Doris Grenson, Marian Landaas, Claire Pearl Tolstad, Arnold Aaberg, Russell Aaberg, Wallace Aaberg, Edward Byhre, Clinton Estenson, Orwald Forbord, Norman Hagen, Kermit Hanson, Ernest Houim, Paul Johnshoy, Norman Kvilhaug, Morris Landaas, Palvin Lokken, John Merrill, Boyd. Opheim, Archie Otteson, and Ralph Skinner.
One local merchant reported to the Times this week that his business during March was the largest in 15 years. With all signs pointing to a favorable spring and a crop in sight, business is on the upswing. Seems as if we are headed for the prosperity that has been just around the corner for so long.
The Indherred Orchestra was at Glenwood last Monday evening where they furnished music for the program sponsored by the Glenwood Music Club. Miss Astrid Flack and Mrs. Harold Peterson played a piano duet, and Miss Flack a piano solo.
The High School operetta “Robin Hood” will be presented on Thursday, April 11. Miss Charlesworth and Miss Olson are co-directors, Margret Larson is the accompanist, and Mr. Gorder, Orville Hagen and Magnus Baukol are stage managers. Following is the cast of the principal characters: Arnt Aune, Gerhard Wold, Everett Wesen, Dorvan Skoglund, Clarice Sanvik, Olive Lorvig, Amy Nelson, LuVerne Thorstad, Margaret Ramstad, Herman Carlson, Lorrin Dahlager, and Arnold Wollan.
At the regular meeting of the board of education of the Starbuck Public Schools, the following teachers were re-elected: Supt. W.A. Peterson, H.R. Engebretson, Lilian Charlesworth, Dorothy Olson, Mabel Hanes, Pearl Hammond, Ida Erickson, Alice Lidstrom, Mary Caughren and Lillie Mae Johnson.

Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Lee entertained many relatives and friends Easter Sunday in honor of their twin daughters, Kathryn and Karolyn, who celebrated their first birthday. The twins had seven birthday cakes plus the many lovely gifts they received.
Announcements have been received of the marriage of Mary Hendricks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton H. Hendricks of Lindale, Georgia to Lt. Howard A. Teigen, of the U.S. Air Force, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lars Teigen on March 14 at Lindale, GA. Lt. Teigen is stationed at Fort Worth, Texas and the bride, a Spar, is stationed in St. Louis, MO.
Walter Larson and Cornelius Nordaune of Starbuck have been ordered for physical examinations April 8th.
Miss Nellie Joan VanLuik, daughter of Mrs. Olive VanLuik and Oliver S. Engebretson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Engebretson were married Saturday evening by Rev. G.O. Forde at the parsonage. The couple will make their home in rural Starbuck.
Orville W. Dahlseng, 23, son of Mrs. Dina Dahlseng of Starbuck is receiving his initial naval indoctrination at the U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois.

All members and friends of the Minnewaska and Fron Lutheran congregations of Starbuck are invited to attend the Good Friday services sponsored by the two congregations at the Fron church at 10:00 a.m. Good Friday. Pastor Sidney of the Minnewaska church and Diversdall of the Fron church will conduct the service and preach on the Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross.
Phil Hagert, Willmar representative for North American Life & Casualty Company, has been named winner of the president’s honor award. The mounted plaque, symbolic of the honor award, was delivered to Mr. Hagert last week. It was personally inscribed for him, and bore the signature of the company president. The inscription reads as follows: “In appreciation of high loyalty to North American tradition and distinctive sales achievement during the annual President’s Month.” Signed, H.P. Skoglund.
Miss Ramona Virginia Steinley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David R. Steinley of Alexandria, and Chester Jerome Flack, son of Mr. and Mrs. O.A. Flack of Starbuck, exchanged marriage vows Saturday, March 26, at 3:00 o’clock p.m. at Calvary Lutheran church in Alexandria. The Rev. Nels Bengtson officiated. The newlyweds left by plane for Fort Devens, Mass., where the groom is stationed.

Rain, melting snow and at times additional snow, added up to the weather problems in the area. Many homes in Starbuck had water in their basements; the whole south wall of a new home in the northeast part of town caved in under the pressure of snow and rain. In another home, the basement floor was forced up at one point from the pressure underneath. In Glenwood, over two inches of rain left up to 18 inches of water in about 30 basements, including the Glenwood Hospital and Retirement Home. The fairgrounds were completely covered by water, which extended over Highways 28 and 29 on Tuesday.
In the Pope County spelling contest held at Glenwood on April 1, 75 young people participated. The following from Starbuck took part: Connie Amundson, a 7th grader, placed second; Sharilynn Olson and Joanna Wilson, 8th graders, tied for third; Dianne Berge and Susan Landmark, 7th graders tied for fourth place; Jane Bucher, 7th grade, and David Olson, 8th grade, tied for fifth place.
Twin girls were born to Mr. and Mrs. Sewald Odegaard on Monday, April 4.
The Seventh and Eighth Grade “Baby Bucks” closed their basketball season last week. The 8th graders had a record of 6 wins and 2 losses, the 7th graders 5 wins and 3 losses. The members on the 8th grade team are David Olson, Allan Berg, Steven Swenson, Douglas Staples, Todd Brenden, Donald Baukol, Bennie Miller, Anthony Olson, Paul Anderson, Gregory Thompson, Tommy Asmus, David Gorder. Robert Olson and James Wesen. The 7th graders are: Gerry Dullum, Steven Olson, Keith Disrud, Scott Boyd, Michael Johnsrud, Larry Disrud, Randy DeGier, Robbie Pederson, Mark Sumption. Mark Olson. Barry Pederson, Robert Amundson and Ronald Johnson.
L. Jay Goodyear, sophomore at Starbuck High School was one of 15 top exhibitors at a Central Minnesota regional science fair April 3 at St. Cloud State College. His purple ribbon project on penicillin, the fungi from which penicillin is derived, was endorsed for exhibition at the State science fair May 7-8 at Gustavus Adolphus college at St. Peter.

Wind, snow plague local area practically all of last week and causes many cancellations. Harold Gorder auction rescheduled for April 8th. The annual meeting of Starbuck Creamery Company was set for last Saturday but due to the blizzard conditions, it was postponed.
Mr. and Mrs. Unker Christofferson and Mr. and Mrs. Warren Baukol announce the engagement of their children, Dianne and David. A July 12th wedding date has been set.
Dawn MacRunnel accepted in USA All-Student group and has had the unique privilege of being selected as a member of the All-Student Group USA. The concert group is made up of twirlers, vocal and instrumental ensembles. Miss MacRunnel has been an outstanding band member for Starbuck High School for several years.
On June 17th, the group will depart on a concert tour to Jamaica marking the 12th year for the All-Student group serving as cultural ambassadors to foreign countries.
Brad Weinrich, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Weinrich graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Animal Science. He has accepted a position at Springer, New Mexico with the State’s Calf/Cow Production Operations.

Todd Berg of Starbuck has earned a 3.5 average and has been placed on the Director’s List for the winter quarter at Moorhead Area Vocational Technical Institute. Todd is enrolled in the Construction Electricity program.
Births: A daughter, Laura Kathryn to Gregg and Susan (Stevens) Downing of St. Paul March 27; a son, Chad Scott to Michelle and Scott Wagley of Brookings, SD March 11.
Funeral services for Russell Sylvester, 87, were held from the Immanuel Lutheran Church March 30. He is survived by one brother, Norval of Starbuck.
Jonathan Aal of Starbuck received honorable mention in employment application at the 1985 Minnesota Post-Secondary Distribution Education Clubs of American Career development Conference held in St. Paul recently.

The Luverne and Mary Jo Forbord family of Pope was honored as the Pope County Farm Family of the Year by the University of Minnesota at a ceremony and banquet held March 16 on the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota.
Pope County Farm Family of the Year. Meriah and Jordan Forbord, John E. (Jack) Morris, Extension Educator; Luverne, Jaiden and Mary Jo Forbord; C. Eugene Allen, Provost Professional Studies, Director, Ag Experiment Station, University of Minnesota.
Shawn Gilbertson, son of Bruce and Brenda Gilbertson of Starbuck recently advanced to the State Current Event Contest. To qualify for the finals, Shawn placed in the top 15 sixth graders in the state. The contest is sponsored by the Minneapolis StarTribune newspaper. His teacher is Gloria Nichtern. The state finals will take place on Sat., April 22 at the Marriott Hotel in Bloomington.

The wrestling season came to a conclusion last week with the awards banquet held at Padua Pub. It was estimated that 155 people attended the banquet. Those receiving awards were Jared Jordahl, outstanding b squad wrestler; Taylor Jergenson, outstanding Varsity wrestler, most pins; Trevor Larson, takedown master; Jason Anderson, most improved; Cody Pahan, outstanding Varsity wrestler; Joe Swartz, fastest fall, outstanding achievement award; and David Bond, most improved.

Joe Alexander was recently promoted to assistant branch manager for Bremer Bank in Starbuck. Alexander will be responsible for managing the bank’s day-to-day activities as well as retail and residential real estate loans.

A donation of $2,530.29 was presented to: Bill Mills, MAHS activities director, and four student athletes, Kaylee Glover, MaKenna Hanson, Greg Helander and Justin Amundson. On behalf of Viking Coca-Cola, Kim Walker, on premise account manager at Viking Coca-Cola Bottling Company, thanked the entire staff and student body at Minnewaska High School and the Glenwood and Starbuck communities, including all local retailers and businesses and their customers for their support of the Powerade 4 Schools program.
Families and children of all ages made their way to Glacial Lakes State Park on Saturday afternoon for the 6th Annual Easter Egg Hunt. The children hunted in three groups, preschool and under, Kindergarten through third graders and fourth through sixth graders. Area Naturalist Ben Eckhoff was there letting people know about Minnesota rabbits and hares. Face painting was big hit with several children getting their faces painted like bunnies. The Easter Bunny also made an appearance to hand out eggs, take pictures with people and even gave out hugs. An estimated 1,100 people attended.
The Minnewaska Area High School speech team continued its powerhouse season with 16 members of the team qualifying for section competition, plus seven more being selected as alternates. Speech team section qualifiers and alternates include Calvin Hoffmann, Eva Kimball, Gavin Jensen, Cole Mercier, Zack Evans, Kailey Ness, Meghan Cerney, Jackson Peterson, Greta Serrin, Mason Schlief, Collin Stumpf, Alex Larson, Sam Pfeiffer, Sam Peters, Shayla Hollenbeck, Naomi Leedahl, Anna Haus, Stefan Haene, Alyssa Boysen, Ben Larson, Jenna Dyreson, Karissa LaMont and Carter LaMont.
