Heading into week five of competition, the Lakers are holding strong in third place and are trying making a move for second place. It was quite windy, which the team is actually starting to get used to.
After finishing practice rounds that were interrupted on Thursday due to tornado warnings, the squads shot their competition scores.
“I was so impressed with the focus everyone had. They showed the coaches they have been listening to our banter about the wind, and to just shoot the targets where they are, not where they THINK they should be, “ stated coach Jennie Stone. “The results today were fantastic, and I really think we have a shot at moving into second place. Unfortunately, we don’t get those results until Sunday morning, after the paper has been printed.”
August Reichmann and new shooter Caleb Mahoney led the team, crushing 48 x 50. Mahoney broke his personal best and very first 25-straight, then followed it with a 23 while August shot a pair of 24’s.
“This was the first week we saw clusters of scores, meaning several of the same scores. The way the league does our scoring, this is a good thing! We had clusters in 48’s, 47’s, 45’s, 44’s and 43’s. That is how you rack up the points. We really have a shot at making another move up,” noted coach Jennie.
The Lakers’ team average jumped up to 19.8 with the help of all the shooters.
Coach Jennie added, “This is truly a team sport. The top few scores don’t win you anything. It is when everyone gives their best that you place higher. 21 out of 30 shooters had an average above 20, with six more having an average of 19-19.5. That is how you make a statement in the standings. No one on this team ever gave up. We are very proud of them!”
Most improved shooter for the week was John Jenson, with Ty Koubsky right behind him. The team begins practice for the state tournament this week. The shooting day at state will be June 15. Everyone is welcome to come and watch. Details will be printed as soon as they are available.
