From the Starbuck Times, Friday, July 14, 1922.
About midnight, July 3rd, R. L. Smith’s elevator at Villard burned to the ground. Two large coal sheds belonging to the Standard Lumber Company also burned. For a time it looked as though the whole business section of the town would go, but two streams of water from the hose and bucket brigade with the aid of a south wind confined the fire to the buildings mentioned. A call was sent in to Glenwood and they responded in 30 minutes with a number of men and their chemicals, but the fire was then under control.
