The Lowry Fire Department was dispatched to a barn fire four miles east of Lowry on County Road 28 at 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday. They arrived at the scene to find the fire to be in a barn full of hay. “The wind was light and from the east, so our main goal was to protect the other building to the west. The barn structure held up well which gave us a barrier. We kept that side cool until we could get sufficient water supply so we could go in a knock down the flames and start pulling the hay out,” said Lowry Fire Chief Kyle Nichtern. The Starbuck, Glenwood, Villard and Forada fire departments were also on scene to help put out the blaze. “There will be smoke coming from the hay piles in the field for a while as they smolder, but we will keep an eye on it,” said Nichtern. The firemen cleared the scene at 3 a.m. on Thursday. The official cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, but combustion of the hay is the primary suspect. “We are so thankful for all of the support from the other departments, first responders and the several community members and businesses that provided food, drinks and whatever else we needed. We are grateful for such a kind and generous community to serve,” Nichtern said.
