Five thousand dollars worth of lakeshore lots were sold in less than two hours yesterday by John Thornton, a famous auctioneer from Montevideo and B. G. Signalsness. The thirty-one lots brought from $10-$225 a piece.

       Even Sheriff Ness is going to feel the depression. The man who sees more farms then all the real estate men in the country is running out of work, he says. The last date at which there was a gap in foreclosure sales was in 1929, He had six sales in one day – the largest number on anyone day shown in the county’s records. So far this year he had 45 sales. The record for other years is as follows: 1921 – 15; 1922 – 43; 1923 – 50; 1924 – 73; 1925 – 36; 1926 – 31; 1927 – 34; 1928 – 43; 1929 – 34; 1930 – 46; 1931 – 54.

Summer flowers, baskets of colorful gladioli and candelabra with light tapers formed the setting for the pretty summer wedding at the Glenwood Lutheran Church on Sunday afternoon, August 23rd when Miss Blanche Halvorson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Halvorson, became the bride of Delbert Fjellman Anderson, Son of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. J. Anderson of Barsness township, Rev. J. Linnevold read the single ring service in the presence of a large circle of relatives and friends.

A lawn social will take place at the L. C. Berg home in Starbuck, Saturday, August 20. Serving will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., by group 3 of the Fron ladies aid. 

Corsicana, Texas, Aug. 8, 1942 – Aviation Cadet Glenn T. Berge has just arrived in Corsicana Field for the Army Replacement Center, Kelly Field, Texas. Cadet Berge has been assigned for primary flight training to the Air Corps, Training Detachment. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Berge of Starbuck.

Lyle Knutson was taken to Minneapolis on Tuesday, where his case was diagnosed as polio. 

Mr. and Mrs. George Knutson and daughters were honored at a Farwell party on Tuesday evening at the Community rooms. 

Herb Olson, who was formerly employed at the Starbuck Lumber Co. will start working for Landaas and Pederson in the office, Sept. 1. 

Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Ronnie are the proud parents of a baby girl born Aug. 14. 

60 YEARS AGO

The Starbuck Fire Department will be host to the Lake Region fire school, which comprises towns within an area from Tintah to St. Cloud, Sunday, Sept. 9. 

According to Swift County News a pair of Benson lads and a Montevideo companion also accomplished a bit of a “feat” last Saturday. John Goggin and Mark Larson, Benson, Dave Bond, Montevideo, started from the southwest corner of Minnewaska about 8 a.m. and proceeded to walk around the lake, a distance of more than 21 miles. They reached home about 7:15 p.m. without any desire to do a couple of quick laps.

Residents within the corporate limits of the village of Starbuck will be asked to attend a meeting to be held next Thursday night at the “community rooms” to decide whether or not Starbuck should go the United Fund way.

According to word received from Edwin Dahlberg, newly hired administrator for the Minnewaska hospital, he and his family expect to move to Starbuck the 6th of September. 

Beth Olson, daughter of the Thomas E. Olsons, has accepted the position as director of Day School Center for Mentally Retarted School in Minneapolis. This center is sponsored by the Mount Olivet Lutheran Church. She was previously employed in Vermont. 

On Sunday, Aug. 27, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Olson attended the Minnesota Teacher of the Year luncheon. The luncheon and program were held at the Thunderbird Motel in Bloomington.

Mr. Olson received two plaques. He will keep one and present the other to the school which he represents.

On Sunday, Aug. 29, at the Pope County Historical Museum, railroad people from the past and present are going to gather and enjoy hearing the tales of railroading in the days gone by. Special attention will be given those who had been in the employment of the railroad for the longest time.

The Minnewaska chapter of Ducks Unlimited has announced that its third annual banquet will be held at the Minnewaska House on Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. Chapter chairman Mark Hedner of Starbuck feels the fund-raising function should be marked o the calendar by anyone who is interested in the future of North America’s waterfowl. 

New Lowry Postmaster. Assuming the duties of postmaster recently was Steve Hennemann. Hennemann comes to Lowry from Buckman, where he was postmaster for the past two years. A native of the St. Cloud area, Hennemann has been with the U.S. Postal Service for the past 14 years. He began his career in the St. Cloud office, working his way to the supervisory position.

Frank  and Jim Starbuck of St. Claire, Michigan stopped in Starbuck recently to see what their namesake community was like. They were enroute to Perham. 

Dave Edmunds, a farmer near Starbuck and his daredevil dog, “Duke,” are highlighted in the monthly issue of “Farm and Ranch” magazine. Since he was a puppy, Duke has been known to preform dangerous stunts like riding on top of Edmunds’ truck, but his most daring stunt to date has been ski-boarding on a nearby lake while Edmunds water skis behind him. “When I figured Duke was ready to solo, I jumped off the board, and he jumped off to follow me,” Edmunds said. Next time, I told him to “stay” and he did!

Among those at the Veteran Memorial Community Center in Inver Grove Heights  earlier this month to receive thanks from France for serving to free  that country in WWII was Clarence Jones of Starbuck. Jones received his certificate from French General Consul Dominique Dechfer in the ceremony in Inver Grove Heights Aug. 9. 

Antique tractors turned out to be a popular attraction at Country Day held Saturday in Starbuck. Other events included a car show at Franny’s, farm tour of the Mike Billehus farm, street sales and tractor parade Saturday night. 

People in the community will have a chance to meet and greet the men and women in uniform at the Pope County Fairgrounds during the first annual Law Enforcement Fair on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 10 to 3 p.m.

MAHS Senior Sharaya Schwardt has been busy painting one of the walls in the MAHS Cafeteria. She has  finished the large Lakers logo and is working on a football player and softball player to go to go beside the logo. Sharaya is known for her art skills through out the school. 

The Starbuck City Council held a special public meeting on August 22 to discuss the Legacy Grant. Councilman Jamie Logan and Phillip Down of Widseth Smith and Nolting have been working on writing to try to get money to replace the docks at the Starbuck Marina. 

The Minnewaska-Morris Gators Swim & Dive team kicked off the season Saturday at the Willmar Invite and have their first dual meet of the year on the year on Thursday, Aug. 30, against rival Montevideo at the RFC Aquatics Center in Morris.
