The Minnewaska Area girls tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 6-1 victory at Benson-KMS last Tuesday afternoon.  One day earlier, the Lakers fell twice at the Brainerd triangular to Brainerd (6-1) and Moorhead (5-2).

Minnewaska Area was 1-0 in the WCC and 1-6 overall heading into a home match with Morris Area-WCA, Thursday.  The Lakers beat the Tigers, 7-0, and highlights from that match will appear in next week’s paper.

The Lakers now move into a Tuesday and Thursday schedule for the next four weeks, including this week when Minnewaska Area plays at Montevideo, Tuesday (tomorrow) and hosts Lac qui Parle, Thursday.

•  This year’s Minnewaska Area girls tennis team, coached by Tara Reichmann, Chad Quelle and Carter LaMont, are seniors Olivia Bleick, Zoey Elwood and Grace Jensen; junior Brianna Erickson; sophomores Sydney Dahl, Katie Sorenson, Megan Thorfinnson, Avarie Uhde and Kathryn Vold; and ninth-graders Olivia Danielson, Jayda Kolstoe, Alia Randt, Addison Heid and Hannah Walsh.

at Brainerd Invitational

Although the scores show 6-1 and 5-2, the results were much closer at the Brainerd Invitational as the Lakers lost three third-set tiebreakers.

Against Brainerd, Alia Randt and Sydney Dahl picked up the Lakers’ lone point with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 tiebreaker win at first doubles.

Minnewaska Area fell in straight sets in four of the matches, but Jayda Kolstoe lost a close 1-6, 6-4, 11-9tb match at fourth singles, and Olivia Bleick and Katy Vold were defeated by a 6-4, 7-5, 10-7tb score at third doubles.

•  The 5-2 loss to Moorhead was even closer.  Earning the Lakers’ two points were Jayda Kolstoe, with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-4tb win at fourth singles, and the second doubles’ team of Grace Jensen and Zoey Elwood, which won 6-1, 3-6, 10-8tb.  Katy Vold and Livi Danielson lost a close match at third doubles (3-6, 6-3, 10-7tb), Megan Thorfinnson fell 7-5, 6-0 at second singles, and Sydney Dahl and Olivia Bleick lost 6-1, 7-5 at first doubles.

Minnewaska 6, BKMS 1

The Lakers earned their first win of the season with a dominating 6-1 victory at Benson-KMS last Tuesday.

Megan Thorfinnson led the victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win at second singles, while Livi Danielson earned a 7-5, 7-6 (7-0) victory at third singles and Jayda Kolstoe gave the Lakers a third point with a 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth singles.

The Lakers swept doubles as Sydney Dahl and Olivia Bleick pulled out a 6-2, 7-5 victory at first doubles, Grace Jensen and Zoey Elwood earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second doubles and Katy Vold and Avarie Uhde prevailed at third doubles with a 6-1, 6-0 win. BKMS picked up its only point with a close win over Alia Randt at first singles (6-4, 6-4).
