The public schools had a holiday Tuesday to allow the pupils to attend the county fair.
S. L. Gaarder, Peter Brendal, Paul Branae and Peter Engebretson were in Glenwood to meet with a committee on arrangements for the annual gathering of the Gulbrandsdal to be held in Glenwood next year.
Local Grain reported at Stewart’s Elevator: Wheat 78¢; oats 25¢; barley 42¢; flax $1.58 and rye 52¢.

School opened last Tuesday, Sept. 5 with an enrollment of 81 pupils: 36 freshmen; 19 sophomores; 14 juniors and 13 seniors.
Miss Tina Swenson, daughter of H.O. Swenson of Hoff and Julius Hendrickson of Starbuck were united in marriage at the parsonage by Rev. Chr. Pederson on Wednesday.
The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Ranum was baptized at the Indherred church last Sunday. She was christened Julia Olivia.

The Starbuck Hardware will open next Wednesday. Free lunch will be served from 2 to 5 p.m. on that day. C. V. Ostrom, I. H. Helgeson, C. F. Peterson, owners.
A class of 10 were confirmed at West Zion Church: Herbert Maanum, Hazel Hendrickson, Mildred Maanum, Alva Olson, Eleanor Negaard, Verna Erickson, Kermit Benson, Ernest Olson, Selmer Olson and Theresa Syverson.
Oluf Smedstad was pleasantly surprised at his home Monday last week , when the following families took possession of his home bringing lots of good food, and helped him celebrate his birthday: B.O. Smedstad, Alfred Smedstad, P.E. Einarson, William and Oscar Smedstad, Alvin Feigum, Mr. and Mrs. John Schelin, Mildred Einarson and Maxwell Smedstad of Morris were also present. A very enjoyable time was spent.

Elmer Swenson from Morris is the new manager at the Farmers Union Oil Co.
Adolph Anderson died Tuesday afternoon from a heart attack, just two weeks after the death of his son, Arthur.
The marriage of Dagny Brevig and Walter Schwendemann took place at a double ring ceremony Sept. 6 at Immanuel Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Lund arrived here from Neufiberg, Germany last Friday and are spending this week with his folks, Albert Lunds.
Ralph Chalenburg purchased the Case Implement business from Ophaug this week and will take immediate possession.

At the Monday night meeting an audience of about 150 heard Mrs. Lawrence Irgens of Glenwood speak of he important part played by both parent and teacher in preparing our children and youth to become good citizens, ready to assume the responsibilities that will be theirs. Before beginning his formal education in the public school, the child begins his training in the home where the parent becomes the teacher and leader.
Mr. and Mrs. Lars Sandre who have operated the Nodland Hotel Cafe the past ten years are retiring from the restaurant business October 1. They plan to move to Long Beach, California around October 10. The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Baukol, will operate the business starting next Monday.
Starbuck Man Elected to MSBA delegate assembly. Norman Hagen of Starbuck was elected to serve with three other delegates to represent Douglas, Grant, Pope, Stevens and Traverse counties at the initial Assembly in November. It is felt that the action is one of the most important yet taken by the MSBA in it’s efforts to best serve the school children of Minnesota.

Two Starbuck girls came away with trophies at the “Little Miss Pageant” held at Glenwood last Sunday afternoon. Kate Wahlquist, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wahlquist, was the talented winner. She was sponsored by Larry’s Bakery, Starbuck. Debbie Frank, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Frank , was 2nd runner-up. She was sponsored by Chuck’s Red Owl.
Fifteen Pope County 4-Hers returned from the 1972 state 4-H Market Livestock Show and Horse Show. Pope County 4-H Horse exhibitors won two first place honors. Lois Blair was first in pole weaving with a time of 13.1 seconds. Lois also finished in 5th in barrels with a time of 21.3 seconds. Karen Zehrer, Brooten won 1st in a strong English Pleasure Class. She was riding her Appaloosa, “Stormy.”

Three Pope County 4-H horse exhibitors placed very well in the Minnesota State Fair 4-H Horse Show held last week at the State Fair Coliseum.
The Board of Advisors for the Outstanding Young Men of America Awards Program announced today that Mark D. Sumption of Montevideo has been selected for inclusion in the 1982 edition of OUTSTANDING YOUNG MEN OF AMERICA.
Hospice care program gets started in Pope County. Pope County residents will soon be able to participate in a program designed to provide support and encouragement to people who are dying.

The 1992 MAHS Homecoming Royalty was crowned at Homecoming Coronation ceremonies held last Saturday night at the MAHS Auditorium. Crowned King and Queen for this year’s festivities were Brian Malyon and Tracy Anderson.
Jamie Knoblauch of Glenwood shot an eight-point 180 pound buck the first weekend of bow hunting. This was Knoblauch’s first year for bow hunting, in years past he has slug hunted with his family.
The Minnewaska Lakers football squad won their third game in four tries last Friday as the Steve Hill coached team pounded the Morris Tigers 26-7 in a game played at Morris. The victory also gave the Lakers a perfect 3 and 0 mark in West Central Conference South Division action.

Starbuck firefighters were called to a shed fire Thursday morning. The fire reportedly started when a spark ignited a lawnmower. According to Starbuck police, the juvenile who reported the fire had been working on the mower, filled it with gasoline, and as he attempted to start the mower it sparked and burst into flames. As police and fire arrived on the scene the shed was already fully engulfed in flames. There were no injuries, but the shed was completely destroyed.
The Minnewaska Area girls’ tennis team steamrolled a pair of West Central Conference opponents last week, picking up extra momentum it will need as the regular season winds down into the postseason.
The grandson of Myron and Ida Farbord took home the most wins in the livestock judging contest. He exhibited the purple ribbon winner with his Angus Heifer, made the 4-H Livestock Auction and was named reserve Champion Senior Showperson for market beef entries. Mitteness was also an overall winner with his Angus Beef Steer at the F.F.A. show and exhibited three blue ribbon pigs.

Glacial Hills Elementary Director Deb Mathias gave an enrollment update of 121 students to the school board at the monthly meeting on September 25th.
The Minnewaska Lakers Football team put an end to a 14-game loosing streak with an exciting action packed win over Montevideo at home on Friday night.
Barring no stumbles from the Minnewaska volleyball team in Paynesville this week, the Homecoming event Thursday night will be the most important West central Conference match that the Lakers have been involved in for more than a decade. Entering this week, the Lakers continue to hold down second place in the conference, one match behind an outstanding Sauk Centre squad that has maintained a spot in the Class AA volleyball state poll all season.
