Guest Opinion

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), recognized and observed across Minnesota and the nation each year.

Each year, hundreds of DVAM activities are held to mourn those who lost their lives as a result of domestic violence, celebrate those who have survived and are thriving, and connect communities in their efforts to change norms and end domestic violence. In the last year, Someplace Safe served nearly 4,000 victims across the region, offering crisis intervention, assistance with protection orders, emergency resources (shelter, transportation, meals), safety planning and support to survivors of domestic violence and other crimes.

Someplace Safe invites you to attend our Annual Domestic Violence Walk on Wednesday, October 26.  The walk will begin at the Western Prairie Human Services parking lot in Glenwood at 11:30am, and end at the Chamber of Commerce and Welcome Center, where Minnesota’s statewide Clothesline Project will be on display. A short program about Domestic Violence and what we can do in our community will be held, along with a light lunch and conversation.

Another way you can participate locally is by taking part in the annual Day of Purple, occurring on October 20.  On this day, show support for victims and survivors by wearing the color purple throughout the day. Feel free to get your whole office, club or social group involved in wearing purple on October 20 and make sure to post your #dayofpurple participation photos on social media. Free Day of Purple posters and stickers may be requested.
