Blessings for animals of all sizes

Oct. 11, 1962 Members of the Villard High School band and their director, Don Erickson, were featured in the Tribune on the occasion of the arrival of the band’s new uniforms. Pictured were Dave Tank, Hazel Remington and Margaret Pennie. The uniforms had arrived in time and would be a special part of the Villard/Underwood homecoming clash. 

Nort Schensted, called “a man of many hobbies, “ retired as a  rural mail carrier for the post office after 42 years on the job. He had begun his career in Brooten and moved to the Glenwood office in 1933. He recalled that his first trip on a route had been with a team since the roads were so bad his Model-T Ford couldn’t make it. 

A citizen’s group backed the Glenwood school board and an architect was to be hired to plan a new grade school building. Overcrowding was cited as the chief reason a new building was necessary. 

Oct. 12, 1972 – The search continued for three missing hunters, lost on Lake Reno. The body of the fourth hunter had been found. High winds and waves and cold temperatures hampered the search fr the presumed victims. The tragedy occurred slightly less than a year after the death of three hunters on the same lake. 

The Glenwood Memorial Athletic Field was to be renamed Cliff Hansen Field in honor of a former Glenwood athletic director and coach. Hansen was a Glenwood High School graduate who had played college and professional football before returning to Glenwood to teach and coach. 

The Glenwood High School drama department would present You Can’t Take It with You, a comedy of the 1930’s. Among those participating were Steven Hagen, Michelle Peltier, Dave Butler, Vickie Wolf, Mike Stackpool, Kathy Brokhausen, Glen Wegener, Paula Hough and Sandy Peterson. 

Oct. 14, 1982 – The Glacial Ridge Hospital was given a three-year accreditation by the Joint Commission Accreditation of Hospitals, a Chicago based agency which accredits most of the nation’s hospitals. The three-year citation was the longest awarded to hospitals bu the commission.

The Glenwood Jaycee Women celebrated their 25th anniversary at a luncheon. Among the past presidents in attendance were Darlene Johnson, Della Ostrander, Rose Jacobson, Carol Kaus, Petie Waxlax, Pat Lepper, Joyce Hurd, Jan Lecander, Ruth Martinson, Joann Benjamin, Marion McCrory, Jan Tostenson, Bev Salonen, Lesley Smith, Annette Gasser, Lois Maher, Lonnie Danielson, Angie Schlief, Bonnie Wagner, Mavis Suckstorff, Heidi Winter, Cindy Leedahl and Pam Jones. Also honored was Terri Wagner, the only Glenwood member ever to win the Key Woman award from the state organization. 

Oct. 12, 1992 –  The seven-unit apartment building, more commonly known as  the “flats,” was in the midst of condemnation proceedings initiated by the Glenwood City Commission. The commission was surprised when the building owner, Eldon Bagstad, had hired a contractor from Benson to demolish the apartment building, remove the basement and fill the area with gravel for another project the owner had planned. 

The Glenwood Chamber of Commerce’s annual good taste dinner and Chinese auction was set for Sunday, Oct. 18, at the Minnewaska House. A large buffet featured foods from 10 vendors in Glenwood. The event also included a Chinese auction and silent auction. 

Despite a petition signed by 60 city residents opposing the location of the new proposed senior housing development on city park land, the Glenwood City Commission approved the exchange of the land for the project. 

Oct. 14, 2002 – for 20 years, Gene Schroeder of Glenwood had been building a boat. On Tuesday afternoon, after several hours of mounting the boat onto a semi trailer, the boat started its voyage to its new home in Green Cove Springs Fla. Schroeder built the boat from scratch, using wood from trees from the family farm and other locations in the Glenwood area. The boat will be used in Florida during the winter months by Gene and his wife, Sandy, and more often as they inch toward retirement. 

Oct. 15, 2012 – At twice the size, twice the nights and with the addition of non-scary, kid-friendly activities, this year’s Pope County Fright Nights attraction is set to break last year’s attendance in a big way. 

“Blessing of the Animals” draws creatures large and small. Pastor Eileen Mehlyoffered blessings to animals of all sizes at the annual Blessing of the Animals event in Terrace. 

The Glenwood Rotary Club provided a free dictionary to all third-grade students at the Minnewaska Area Elementary school. This is the sixth year the local Rotary Club has provided dictionaries, and the local club has now given away 624 dictionaries to local students.
