As Thanksgiving approaches, there is joy in learning the traditions and memories of others. Maybe you’ll recognize one that you have in your family or take on a new experience with some of those shared by BeKinders.
*My mom always created turkeys from sandwich cookies, candy corn, and creme drops. Her great-grandchildren still enjoy making the turkeys. What fun to continue her tradition.
*We had the traditional Thanksgiving meal, usually by ourselves as we lived a distance away from our relatives. After the meal, our family of six would each have a 3 x 5 card with their name on it. We would send the cards around and each of us would write something that we were thankful for that person. A thankful for who you are and what I like about you.
*The start of our Thanksgiving meal was based on the time spent for family members to go pheasant hunting. It was fun to welcome them back to a home cooked meal as we heard of their adventures.
*As it turned dark on Thanksgiving Eve, our family bundled up and walked nine blocks to enjoy the beautiful city Christmas lights as they switched on to celebrate the continuation of the holiday season.
*Being a part of the “We Are So Blessed” cantata years ago with music I enjoy to this day, is a good memory.
*My Thanksgiving Day begins with prepping the meal while catching the sights and sounds of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
*The Friday after Thanksgiving Day, our family goes to the theater for a movie.
*We went to grandma’s in Starbuck or my aunt’s home and after our meals we went go-carting on a nearby pond.
*After dinner we put up my husband’s family’s Dickens Village set for Christmas. His mother has over 100 pieces starting from about 40 years ago and almost all were gifts from friends and family, some of who are no longer with us. She wrote everyone’s names on the bottom and the year so we reminisce about all of those people and share fun memories.
*Pie! We make way too much pie and have it for breakfast all weekend. My grandmother used to let me have pie for breakfast growing up when I was at her house because “it has fruit in it, it’s good for you.” Always makes me smile. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
