The Minnewaska Area girls basketball team is still looking for its first win after losing two WCC games last week at Montevideo last Tuesday (52-47) and at home, Thursday (67-48).

The Lakers fell to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the WCC with the latest two losses.  Minnewaska’s first five games on the schedule are all against conference favorites, including this Tuesday’s game at NLS.

The Lakers are also set to play at Morris Area-CA, Friday, and at Breckenridge, Saturday.

Montevideo 52, Waska 47

The Minnewaska Area girls basketball team fell to 0-3 overall with a 52-47 loss at Montevideo last Tuesday night.  The Lakers trailed 23-17 at halftime before outscoring the Thunderhawks 30-29 in the second half.

Montevideo’s Avery Koenen had game-highs of 24 points and 18 rebounds to lead her team, while Brooke Kolstoe, Sydney Dahl and Megan Thorfinnson were among the leaders for the Lakers.

Kolstoe, 6-of-9 from the field, had 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals, while Dahl, who was 4-of-8 shooting, had 12 points and three boards and Thorfinnson added 10 points, three rebounds and three blocked shots.

The Lakers were cold from the field, shooting 31 percent overall (19-for-60), including just 5-of-26 from three-point range.

Avery Fier added six points for the Lakers, while Lauryn Ankeny and Jayda Kolstoe both scored three points on one three-pointer.

Last year, the Lakers earned one of their victories over Montevideo, which went on to win the section title and a berth at state.

Sauk Cen 67, Waska 48

The Lakers led early 14-10, but the Mainstreeters scored 17-straight points to take the lead for good at 27-14.  Minnewaska Area cut the deficit to 28-21 by halftime, but Sauk Centre would go on to outscore the Lakers 39-27 in the second half to earn the 67-48 victory.

Minnewaska shot 26 percent from the field (16-for-61), including 8-of-24 from three-point range.  The Lakers, who were 8-of-16 on free-throws, had just 13 rebounds all game against the tall SC lineup, which included at least three girls at six-foot plus.

Leslie Murken went 3-of-6 from three-point range to lead the Lakers with 11 points, while Brooke Kolstoe added 10 points and three rebounds.

The Lakers, who were just 8-of-37 on two-point field goal tries, also got eight points and a team-high four rebounds from Sydney Dahl, while Avery Fier, Megan Thorfinnson and Jayda Kolstoe each had five points, and Lauryn Ankeny had four points and two steals.
