Minnewaska Area School (MAS) District announced that Sue Currens is the new early childhood coordinator.
In this role, Currens will lead all aspects of the preschool program. Currens is an advocate of teaching children through play, using hands-on, experiential learning.
“I look forward to meeting more families and working alongside the staff to expand and continue to improve programming,” Currens said. She aims to increase participation in early childhood family education programming in the district.
Currens was previously a MAS district preschool instructor and an elementary coordinator of special education services. She holds a master’s degree and an administrative license in education and has more than 30 years of experience in early childhood programs.
“We’re excited to welcome Sue as the early childhood coordinator. Her depth of experience as an early childhood teacher and elementary special education coordinator are a great fit for this role,” said Scott Lempka, Principal of the Minnewaska preschool through third grade learners. “I look forward to collaborating with Sue to continue to serve our community’s future leaders.”
Little Lakers Preschool serves children ages 3-5 years. The collaborative preschool program focuses on supporting the full range of the child’s social, emotional and developmental needs, while preparing them for a seamless transition to kindergarten. Little Lakers Preschool is staffed by licensed teachers. The program also provides access to support services, as needed, including speech, physical and occupational therapy and mental health services.
The role was previously led for five years by Sara Nestor, now Director at the Glenwood Public Library.
“I worked alongside Sue, and she’s a great asset to Little Lakers Preschool,” Nestor said. “She brings a lot of passion and knowledge that families and students will continue to benefit from.”
Registration for the Little Lakers Preschool will open on March 1. Parents who want to be notified when registration opens are encouraged to fill out the interest form: https://www.minnewaska.k12.mn.us/little-lakers-preschool/.
