MGC has seen many changes since first opening as a nine-hole course in 1923

When the first group of golfers for the 2023 teed off last Wednesday to open this year’s golf season it marked 100 years since the Minnewaska Golf Club opened in 1923.

Wednesday also marked the re-opening of the totally remodeled interior of the Minnewaska Golf Club. Work included raising the ceiling, new windows, expanding the bar area, new lighting, new flooring and more.

Work on the course actually started in 1921 when several men selected a site for the course. The current location was one of three that were studied with the current site being the best in their minds.

Men started picking rocks and clearing room for fairways on land for which the purchase was not yet secured.

A more formal organization was formed in 1922 as work continued on the course and the course opened in 1923. It opened as a nine-hole course and was expanded in 1992 to 18 holes.

A 100-year celebration is scheduled for June 16-18 with a variety of activities scheduled for that weekend.

The club’s board of directors and others have been organizing events for that weekend and more details will be released in coming weeks.

A more detailed article about club history will be published in the June 12 issue of the Pope County Tribune.
