The Minnewaska Area track and field teams are starting to peak at the right time as the girls’ team won the Section 5A True-team Meet last Tuesday and Wednesday at Sauk Centre and both teams placed second at the 13-team Dave Sieben Meet at Melrose, Thursday.

This week, the WCC Track and Field Meet is set for Tuesday (tomorrow) at Montevideo, while the girls’ team will compete at the State True-Team Meet at Stillwater, Saturday.

True-team sectional

The Minnewaska Area girls track team won the Section 5A True-Team title last Tuesday and Wednesday at Sauk Centre High School.  The competition started last Tuesday, but due to rain, it was not finished until the next day.

The top 16 placefinishers in each event earn points for their team with scoring going 16-15-14 . . . 3-2-1.  Each team could enter two athletes or one relay team for each event.

By placing first, the Lakers advance to the State True-Team Track Meet, set for this Saturday at Stillwater.

“It was extremely tight throughout the meet on the girls’ side between us, Paynesville and Holdingford,” boys coach Zach Traphagen said.  “When the girls knew how close it was, they really stepped it up and turned in some very impressive results. We are so proud of how the girls responded in the face of adversity and really showed their competitive spirit to get the job done.”

Minnewaska Area had seven individual titles during the meet.  Jayda Kolstoe won the shot put (36-9) and discus (117-2 1/2), while Lauryn Ankeny placed first in the 300 meter hurdles (48.84), McKenzie Luetmer won the 400 meter dash (1:01.34) and the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter relay teams were also victorious.

Luetmer had a big night, also placing second in the 200 (26.78) and triple jump (32-7 1/2), while Lexi Bosek was second in the pole vault (8-0), Phemie Oeltjen was third in the pole vault (7-6) and fifth in the high jump (4-8).

Mya Lindemann added a fifth in the 100 (13.41), while Teagan Stark was fourth in the 400 (:03.94) and fifth in the 200 (27.68), Lauryn Ankeny was fourth in the 1600 (5:39.81), Olivia Danielson was fifth in the 1600 (5:56.98), and Elsey Hagen was third (12:46.1) and Kiearra Wilmes fourth (12:55.62) in the 3200 meter run.

•  In the boys competition, Minnewaska Area placed fourth with 443.5 points.  Sauk Centre won the title with 590.5 points, winning six titles, while Montevideo had firsts on the way to placing second with 523.5 points and Holdingford was third with 522.5.

Asante Adams placed sixth in the 100 (12.0) and seventh in the 200 (24.39), while James Ward was seventh in the 800 (2:12.52), Nick Ankeny was eighth in the 1600 meter run (5:11.05) and Zach Palmer earned seventh in the 3200 meter run (11:34.01).

In the field events, Blake Andreas placed fourth in the triple jump (37-6) and eighth in the long jump (17-10 3/4) and Jayce Kovarik earned fifth in the pole vault (9-6), while Kenneth Czech, Drew Winter, James Ward, Kaiden Harvey and Conner Stein also earned points in the field events.

The Lakers also did well in the relays with a second by the 3200 meter team, one third and two fourths.

The 3200 meter relay team of Ward, Kovarik, Tank and Ankeny set a new school record with their time of 8:33.58, breaking the old record of 8:36.93 set last year by Ankeny, Kovarik, Tank and Noah Danielson.

“The boys had some extremely good times on the track yesterday, including setting a new school record in the 3200 meter relay,” coach Traphagen said.  “Going into the meet, we knew it would be extremely difficult to top Sauk Centre, but we really thought we could finish in that top 4, which we were able to do.

“Our boys’ program is definitely on the rise, and I believe this group is only going to improve moving forward this year, next year and beyond. We’re very proud of all the boys.”
