Ten new residences are being built in Starbuck this year. Contractors are complaining about a shortage of hands.
Barsness is to celebrate the 4th of July in great style this year on the shores of Lake Ben on the farm of Erick Barsness. It is expected that this will be a very large celebration as a great many people prefer to celebrate the 4th out in the country rather than in town.
The editor and his wife made sherbet last Saturday afternoon from hail stones, after the storm. We understand several made ice cream.
The sad news spread quickly around town last Friday evening that little John Rye, age 8, had died from lockjaw. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Rye, two sisters and one brother.

Miss Selma Kittelson and Mr. Carl Disrud were united in marriage at the East Zion parsonage on Wednesday by Rev. Chr. Pederson. The bride was attended by Mrs. Martin Overstad, Miss Lila Paulson, and Miss Selma Flodin. The groom’s attendants were Mr. Marin Overstad, Ole Disrud and Clarence Davidson.
The Minnewaska Hospital picnic held just north of Spring Grove last Sunday attracted at least 2,000 people. A delicious lunch was served at noon under the auspices of the Hospital Auxiliary. Superintendent Miller of the WCSA in Morris delivered the address of the day. In the afternoon there was a ball game between White Bear Lake and Greenland, which White Bear Lake won 12 to 7. Both teams played well, but Troen for the winners, burned them across the plate so the Greenland boys could hardly see them. The receipts for the day were about $425, which will go in the Hospital fund, after expenses are paid.
The following young people will be confirmed at the St. Johns church on Sunday: Emma Fosse, Rena Haldorson, Betsy Gunvaldson, Hilma Dahlseng, Myrtle Vigdahl, Omer Dalen and Norman Tangen.

The White Bear Lake Insurance Co. will complete 50 years of service on the 23rd day of this month, and will hold a picnic and program at the Starbuck Park to commemorate this anniversary. Among the speakers will be the U.S. Senator Henrik Shipstad. Music will be furnished by the Indherred Orchestra, assisted by the legion quartet and chorus.
The twenty-sixth annual 8th grade graduation of the Pope County Rural School will be held at the Glenwood Theatre on Tuesday, June 27. The Annual Pope County spelling contest will be held at ten o’clock in the morning.
The following program will be given at the Indherred Y. P. S. Sunday evening: vocal solo, Arthur Nordberg; reading, Naomi Gorder; clarinet solo, Conrad Pederson; talk, Andrew Boe; piano solo, Margaret Ramstad.
The Starbuck 4-H Club won the first prize in the singing contest at the county-wide picnic at Glenwood on Monday. The boys kittenball team also won first. The following girls were picked to be on the all county basketball teams: Ann Engebretson, Vivian Tollefson, Irene Schumacher and Margaret Larson. In the kittenball Lillian Torgerson, Ann Engebretson, Murial Tollefson, Vivian Tollefson and Margaret Larson were picked.

Roger Takken, 7-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Art Takken of Terrace and two men from Sacred Heart, who were visiting at the Takken home were accidentally drowned in the Terrace Mill Pond at noon Wednesday. The three were fishing in a hunting boat when it capsized.
Miss Myrtle Rundquist, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Rundquist and Marvin E. Loe of Webster, SD were married at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Minneapolis June 3.
Mr. and Mrs. Palvin Evjen entertained relatives and friends Sunday in honor of their daughter, Beatrice confirmation.
Sgt. Gerhard Wold, son of Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Wold of Starbuck, was recently promoted to first cook for the Officers Special School at Camp Claibourne, LA.
Boyd Brendeson bought the 80-acre farm south of the village from Clara Wrolson of Cyrus this week.

The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Dullum, Candace Kay, was baptized June 21 at Minnewaska Lutheran Church. Sponsors were the parents and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Amundson.
Corporal Conrad O. Urke and Private First Class Alfred O. Urke, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Knut Urke, arrived home Wednesday after serving two years in the U.S. Army. Both boys were inducted into the Army June 21, 1951 and received their basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where they were in the 3rd Armored Division. After completing 16 weeks of basic training, they spent two weeks delayed route at their home. They were then sent to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey, where they received their orders for the Panama Canal. They were both military police and were fortunate in being together all the time while in the service. After serving 18 months in the panama Canal, they were sent to Ft. Custer, Michigan where they received their release.

David Ferdinand Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Axel Peterson, and Ronald Vernell Bardal, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bardal, graduated from North Dakota State University on June 3. David received a BA degree in Agriculture and Ronald Received a BS degree in Electrical Engineering.
Miss Patricia Adele Meeks of Wadesboro, N.C., and Richard L. Hanson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hanson of Starbuck, were married at the First Baptist Church of Wadisville on Saturday, April 27. The Couple will make their home in Charlotte, N.C.
Diane Marie, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Hoverud, was baptized Sunday, June 2 at West Zion Lutheran Church. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Odell Hoverud and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Berg.
Steve John, adopted son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Moe, was baptized Sunday, June 2 at Indherred Lutheran Church. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Burton Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Moe.

Harold Gorder, chairman of the Minnewaska Hospital Board announced this week that James Maki will be the new hospital administrator. He will replace Ed Dahlberg who resigned recently effective July 1st.
Supt. Ernest Janisch announced that Jerome Flom has been hired as elementary principal to succeed Mrs. Alice Femrite who resigned at the end of the past school term. Mr. Flom has been with the Detroit Lakes School system since 1960 and has been full time principal there for the past eight years.
In special ceremonies held last Saturday evening at the Minnewaska House, Linda Syverson was chosen as “Pope County Dairy Princess for 1973.” She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Luverne C. Syverson, Clontarf. Mrs. Ida Hagen of Starbuck is her grandmother and she is presently employed at Pederson’s Super Market.

Mary Amundson, a resident of Glenview Apartments in Glenwood, observed her 98th birthday May 31.
Funeral services for Lorraine Williams, 63, were held from the Fron Lutheran Church June 13. She is survived by her father, Melvin Billehus of Starbuck, and two brothers, Paul Billehus of Starbuck and Robert Billehus of Anoka.
Karla Engebretson graduated from Alexandria Area Vocational Technical Institute May 26 following completing the Legal Secretary program. Her parents are Courtney and Carol Engebretson.

Funeral services for Helen Hagen, 89, of Proctor, were held June 16 at Forbes United Methodist Church. Among her survivors is a daughter, Mrs. Vic (Mardi) Vatthauer of Starbuck.
Luanne Blok, daughter of Harry and Judy Block is currently doing her music student teaching in Zimbabwe.
Dagny Schwendemann of Starbuck took the second place trophy in the Senior Citizens Regional Spelling Contest held in Fergus Falls June 7.
Tammy Hovendick, daughter of Ron and Carol Hovendick of Starbuck, was named runner-up at the region 5 Dairy Princess contest held June 11 in Willmar.
Funeral services for Edgar Flack, 91, were held at Indherred Lutheran Church May 31. He is survived by one brother, Ottar Flack and one sister, Astrid Forde of Starbuck.

Minnewaska Lutheran Home has again proved itself to be among the best. In a recent inspection completed by the Minnesota Department of Health, MLH came out unscathed. This achievement is not rare for MLH, though it is for many other homes.
Some in the Minnewaska area may think that fishing, pontooning or canoeing are the only lake activities one can participate in, but Suze Stevens begs to differ. She’s bringing her long time hobby to Lake Minnewaska: kayaking.
A piece of Pope County history was lost on Saturday afternoon. Flames engulfed the Lakeside Ballroom in Glenwood and even after hours of effort put in by several area fire departments, all was lost. The fire was discovered by ballroom manager Bob Mattson as he was preparing the day’s wedding reception. Mattson had to deliver the bad news to the wedding party, but they were able to move the reception to the Arrowwood Resort in Alexandria.

Greg Ohl will retire from a career in education after 36 years in the field, the last seven as superintendent of Minnewaska Area School District.
When classes let out at the Cyrus Math, Science, and Technology Elementary School (CMST) on Thursday, May 30, 34 students in the school’s seven grades donned graduation caps and gowns. It was the last day of school for all grades, Kindergarten through sixth grade. And when the mid-day graduation ceremony was over, all 34 students stepped out on the school lawn and threw their caps in the air. And so ended the final day for District #611.
The Starbuck City Council met for a few hours on Monday, June 10. The council approved the recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commission to fill the vacancy by appointing Gary Swenson.
