110 YEARS AGO

From June 27, 1913

Miss Sophie Torgerson of Starbuck was married Wednesday of this week to Mr. Victor Johnson of Minneapolis. The ceremony was performed at Glenwood by Rev. H.O. Koefod. Mrs. Johnson is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Torgerson of this village.

A number of friends of Mr. and Mrs. M.B. Stoen surprised them at a farewell party Monday evening at the Andreas Stoen place. Mr. and Mrs. Stoen will leave soon for Elbow Lake where Mr. Stoen goes into the hardware business with a brother-in-law.

Old Mrs. Tolstad, last Wednesday, went to the depot to buy a ticket to take the train to New Prairie where she intended to look after her farming interests, fell to the floor and passed away at the depot after purchasing her ticket. Doctors were sent for and they came out with the sad report that she was deceased. Funeral services will be held at the Conference Church.

Last Sunday afternoon several hundred relatives and friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hans L. Gorder in White Bear Lake to help them celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Gorder have six children; they are Lillian, who is a reporter for the Staples World at Staples, Dagney, Harold, Eldred, Claremont and Rudolph, living at home.

A pair of twins, a boy and a girl, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gilman Aaberg this week. They already had one pair of twins and a set of triplets. 

Funeral services were held at the Immanuel Church on Thursday for little two year old Doris Ione, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Sylvester.

Miss Olga Nordstrom, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gotfred Nordstrom and Mr. Ralph W. Smithberger of Luverne were united in marriage at the home of the bride’s parents on Wednesday evening, Rev. M.C. Johnshoy officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Olson were their attendants.

90 YEARS AGO

From June 22, 1933

Six days of terrific heat with high drying winds played havoc with the early crops around Starbuck. In some places the small grains had headed out and were brown. The temperature has been between 98 and 104. wednesday was a little cooler, a little below 90. 

Fire was discovered on the north wall of Abrahamson’s Cafe in Cyrus at one o’clock Monday morning. It appeared something has been sprayed on the entire wall and set afire. This is the third fire in Cyrus in two months, so it appears there is a fire bug at work. Efforts are being made to find the guilty party. 

The following attended the 4-H Club Encampment at Morris last week: Mildred Christenson, Mildred Gorder, Murial and Vivan Tollefson, Franklin and Vernon Smedstad, Arthur and Gordon Finstad, Norman and Ralph Norland, Melvin Edmunds and Mayland Swenhaugen.

From June 24, 1943

A baby girl, Sylvia Alene was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Winge at the Minnewaska Hospital this week. 

Mrs. Arthur Moses received a letter from her husband dated March 12, 1943 from Peking, China. She has not heard from him in over a year. He stated that he was held by the Japanese from the time of Pearl Harbor until Sept. 2, 1942, and taken to Peking where they have spent the last six months.

Funeral services for Roy Skinner, 54, were held at the Fron Lutheran Church on June 23. He is survived by his wife, Julia; two sons, Howard of Alaska and Ralph of Annandale; and one daughter, Mrs. L. Arthur (Vernice) Barsness of Wildwood, New Jersey.

Miss Gudrun Tiseth, daughter of Mrs. Marie Tiseth of Christine, ND and Thomas Olson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edw. L. Olson of Starbuck were married June 20 at Christine, ND. The couple will make their home in Eau Claire, Wisconsin where the groom has a very fine position as contact man for the Coca Cola Co.

Miss Myra Dalager and Clermont Brenden were married June 16 at the Barsness Lutheran Church. The couple will make their home on the groom’s farm in Blue Mounds.

70 YEARS AGO

Funeral services for Johns Oscar Frisell, 66, were held at the Mission Covenant Church June 25. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Ellen Eliason of Starbuck and two brothers, Ernest Frisell of Glenwood and Alfred Frisell on the home place.

The little two-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Erickson, Patty Jean, became a real heroine on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Erickson and children were visiting the Orville Dahlseng home. Patty and 20-month-old Steven Dahlseng were playing around the yard with the other children. About 3:30 p.m. Patty came into the house and said, “Stevie’s in the wa-wa.” Mrs. Dahlseng rushed out on the water tank and found Steven floating face down on top of the water. She pulled him out and immediately applying artificial respiration. Mrs. Erickson called Dr. Giesen and tried to locate Mr. Dahlseng, who was out mowing hay. Stevie did respond to the artificial respiration and was crying when Dr. Giesen and daddy arrived. Had it not been for Patty Jean, who came all the way from the barn to the house to tell that Stevie was in the tanks, it would have been too late.

Marilyn Zella Peterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Peterson of Starbuck, and Harold Lyle Iverson of Kenyon, MN were married June 21 at the Fron Lutheran Church. The couple will make their home in Oak Park, IL.

William C. Pederson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Pederson, John H. Thorstad, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Thorstad and Jon M. Rorvig, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Rorvig, all of Starbuck, have enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Births: A 2 lb. 14oz son to Mr. and Mrs. Lavonne Berg June 16; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Loren Seeley (Frayne Jackson) of Minneapolis June 18.

Jeffrey Lee, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Dullum was baptized at the Minnewaska Church Sunday, June 16. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Ortmand Disrud.

Mrs. Allan Nygaard entertained a group of women and children Tuesday afternoon in honor of Melrene on her 4th birthday.

The annual Pope County 4-H Favorite Food Show was held June 12 at the Starbuck High School Auditorium. Nineteen 4-H’ers set up displays of their favorite food. In displaying the favorite food, they had a place set for one person with the appropriate table covering, dishes, glassware, silver and centerpieces.

The annual summer picnic of the Minnesota – International Work Study students was held at the Starbuck Lakeshore Park Sunday. Over forty students from all parts of Minnesota were in attendance.

With the final certification date of July 16 for the 1973 feed grain and wheat programs in Pope County, approximately 70 percent of program participants have certified program compliance, reports Walter Kittelson, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation (ASC) county committee chairman.

Pederson’s Super Market will have an open house today so the public can tour their new facility. 

The State Bank of Cyrus will be honoring their president and chairman of the board, A.H. Stellner June 24 in recognition of his 50 years in the banking business. 

Funeral services for Wesley Bright, 86, were held from the Trinity Lutheran Church of Cyrus June 17. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Cyrus; three daughters, Mrs. Clifford (Beulah) Paulson of Alden, Mn; Mrs. Dorothy Thompson of Benson and Mrs. Leonard (Mary Jane”Polly”) Thompson of Bloomington and two sons, Charles of Morris and Wayne (Pete) Bright of Cyrus.

The new Cyrus Apartments located on the eastern edge of Cyrus on Hwy. 28 began taking shape last week as work continued on the building.

Joyce A. Forbord, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Myron Forbord is one of 50 singers chosen for the Minnesota All State Lutheran Choir from over 150 applicants.

Funeral services for Ralph Chalenburg, 69, were held from the Fron Lutheran Church June 10. He is survived by his wife, Jenille and two children, Michael Chalenburg of Searcy, Arkansas and Mrs. Michael (Lisbeth) Jones of East Kilbride, Scotland.

Milton and Verda Samuelson and Ted and Helen Samuelson will be honored as Parade Marshals of the Grand Parade during Heritage Days.

Funeral services for Andrew (Bud) Thorstad, Jr., 74, were held at the Minnewaska Lutheran Church June 10. He is survived by his wife, Margret; two sons, Andrew N. III and Richard, and one daughter, Priscilla.

Melissa Listug, daughter of Rev. Carl and Judy Listug of Glenwood was named Midsommernattsfest Queen Sunday at the Starbuck Lakeshore Park. Named princesses were Merritt Erickson, daughter of Larry and Bev Erickson of Starbuck and Laura Hanson of Brooten. 

Shaun and Tammy Stottler of Barnum, MN are the parents of a son, Zachary Scott, born June 4th.

20 YEARS AGO

A lot has changed over a century in Starbuck. No more horse drawn carriages, blacksmith shops or one room school houses, but one thing has been a fixture and that’s the phone company. Starbuck Telephone Company has long served this area as a leader in phone service and a leader in community service. The company is celebrating it’s 100 year anniversary this month with a fishing tournament and a customer appreciation barbecue.

A building that has held a school house, a saloon, a cafe, a law office, and most recently an antique and book shop will be changing its identity once again. Serendipity, 108 W. Fifth Street, is closing its doors and the building’s owner, Joyce Wahlquist will be auctioning the building and its contents on June 20. 

Minnewaska Lutheran Home and Glenwood Retirement Village decided to fill a hole recently. They haven’t filled any holes dug for expansion quite yet, but rather filled a hole in staff education.

For the first time in Lowry, a Sole4Souls shoe collection project was completed on Wednesday evening, June 12, with about 48 people gathering to package 1,088 pair of donated shoes. The initial idea for the project started in the 4th-6th grade Sunday School class at St. Paul’s Lutheran church, and became a reality when they learned that the Lowry Lions would help support their efforts in any manner that would be helpful. 

Members of Boy Scouts Troup #491 were guests at the Women of Fron brunch on June 13. Asst. Scout Master John Olson accompanied the scouts. Josh Olson read about the meaning of each step in folding the American flag while Lane Krei, Bailey VanWyck and Marcelo Arredondo IV folded the flag. Other scouts present were Dawson Pobuda and Mateo Arredondo. Jackson Peterson was unable to attend. 

The owners of Star Lanes Bowling found the storm had collapsed the roof of their business on Friday (June 21) morning.
