Legion earns third at Montevideo Tourney

The Glenwood-Lowry Legion baseball team improved to 7-4 overall after winning four of five games last week. The G-L Legion placed third at a tournament at Montevideo, June 24-25, beating Prinsburg (8-0) and losing to Byron (6-3) before beating Breck (17-2) in the third-place game.
Last Monday, the Legion team hosted Ashby for a doubleheader and Glenwood-Lowry earned a pair of close wins, 2-1 and 9-7. G-L was also set to play a doubleheader at Parkers Prairie, Thursday, but results from those games were not available by the early Fourth of July deadline.
G-L is set to close out the regular season with a game at home against Brooten, Wednesday and a doubleheader at home vs. Benson-Hancock, Thursday, July 6. Playoffs are set to begin July 10.
Last week’s highlights
The Lakers placed third at the Montevideo Legion Baseball Tournament last weekend. Ryland Martin and Connor Erickson earned the victories on the mound, while Connor Frey was among the top hitters, going 5-for-9 overall during the three games.
• Dylan Alexander went 2-for-4 with two runs and double during the opening 8-0 win over Prinsburg, while Frey was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Martin spun a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts to key the defense.
• The Lakers left 11 runners on base during the loss to Byron despite outhitting the winning team, 13-11. Noah Jensen, Levi Johnson and Martin all went 2-for-4 during the loss to Byron, while Austin Ballhagen and Frey were both 2-for-3.
• The Lakers came back to place third with a 17-2 win over Breck, shortened to four innings due to the 15-run rule. Erickson earned the win on the mound and also was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs, two RBI and two doubles.
Levi Johnson, Jack Majerus, Panitzke and PJ Johnson also had two hits each as Glenwood-Lowry had 16 hits and 17 runs in only four innings.
All 10 players in the game for Glenwood-Lowry had at least one run and one hit, while eight also had at least one RBI.
• Glenwood-Lowry improved to 6-2 in its last eight games with the 2-1, 9-7 doubleheader sweep of Ashby last Monday at home. In the first game, PJ Johnson pitched a complete-game five-hitter with eight strikeouts and was also 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI-double.
Both teams scored all their runs in the first inning and the pitchers took over from there.
In the nightcap, Levi Johnson earned the victory on the mound in relief of Austin Ballhagen, while Alexander earned the save.
Offensively, Alexander, Martin and Ballhagen were all 2-for-3 with at least one run.
