Sauk Centre claims 7-of-12 titles during win over Gators

The Minnewaska/Morris Area Gators swimming and diving team lost a dual meet to Sauk Centre last Tuesday night at home, 112-74. The loss dropped the Gators’ overall record to 2-3 and conference mark to 1-2. The Gators had five titles against Sauk Centre, including two firsts each by Becca Femrite and Lyla Stadtherr.
The Gators were also set to compete at Fergus Falls, Saturday, but results of that meet will be highlighted next week
Coming up for the Gators is a meet at Holdingford, Tuesday Oct. 3, followed by a home meet at UM-Morris, Thursday, Oct. 5 versus Perham-Dent.
Sauk Centre 112, Gators 74
The Gators won five of the 12 events, but still fell in a dual meet with Sauk Centre last Tuesday night in the Minnewaska Area pool, 112-74.
The 200 medley team of Soffia Stadtherr, Lyla Stadtherr, Becca Femrite and Isabel Guerra placed first with a time of 2:06.86, while Lyla Stadtherr also won the 100 breaststroke (1:19.15) and Femrite placed first in the 200 freestyle (2:13.42).
In addition, Melena Longtin placed first in the 100 freestyle (58.11) and Claire Barnstuble won the diving competition with 199.75 points.
“Sauk Centre is tough competition, but we put up a fight,” coach Sam Oellien said. “We started off the meet taking first in the 200 medley, edging Sauk Centre by .01 and the competition was just as close the rest of the way, including a tie for first by Becca Femrite in the 200 freestyle.
“Our divers have also been working hard in practice learning some new dives and they are impressive to watch. After the diving competition, we trailed by only 37-41.”
Earning seconds were Lyla Stadtherr in the 200 individual medley (2:39.6), Ella Roering in diving (174.35), Femrite in the 500 freestyle (6:14.02), the 200 freestyle relay team of Soffia Stadtherr, Guerra, Mesa Kittelson and Longtin (1:53.75), Soffia Stadtherr in the 100 backstroke (1:12.39) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Soffia and Lyla Stadtherr, Longtin and Femrite (4:08.54).
“I am very happy to see the Gators continue to work hard as we are getting into a tough stretch of the season,” coach Oellien said. “We are also approaching our last home meet of the season where we will be celebrating our seniors.”
• In the JV meet, Sauk Centre also won by a 119-63 score. Placing first for the Gators were Abbigail Peterson in the 100 freestyle (1:12.97) and the 200 yard freestyle relay team of Vylet Frank, Phemie Oeltjen, Shelby Hoberg and Claire Zenk (2:15.31).
