Editor Tim Douglass’ quote on page 4A in last week’s issue offers a nicely succinct manner of categorizing broadly how we can place people into one of three categories of minds: (Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.) It seems entirely possible that each of us might qualify on any given day for all three categories, but I speak for myself, not others.

Last week’s editor’s quote seems appropriate as a starting point for consideration of how each of us might categorize the statement in L.K. Hanson’s “You Don’t Say” column found in the March 4th edition of the Minneapolis Strib. Hanson quotes French Philosopher and essayist Michel de Montaigne, who said: “The corruption of the age is made up by the particular contribution of every individual man; some contribute treachery, others injustice, atheism, tyranny, avarice, cruelty, according to their power.”

Hanson then goes on to quote Donald Trump’s advisor Stephen Miller from a Charlie Kirk podcast interview (2/5/2024). Miller: “I don’t care what happens in this world. If President Trump gets re-elected, the border’s going to be sealed, the military will be deployed, the National Guard will be activated, and all the illegals are going home.”

Well, just a heads up for members of the Minneapolis National Guard, some of whom might agree with Miller’s suppositions, others in the Guard, not so much. They would rather protect Minnesota communities during floods or search for lost children. Perhaps serve another commitment to the mid-East. Miller has grander plans for the Guard’s men and women; his plans may be at odds with military leadership or federal law.

It is fair to say that Miller left the White House with Trump toting more “plans” to make America more in the image of Trump. Do we really want Stephen Miller back in the White House? Think about it.
