Softball team sweeps Montevideo 16-10, 9-4

The Minnewaska Area softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Montevideo, Thursday night at home, 16-10, 9-4. The Lakers, who are now 3-9 overall, also lost a home game against NLS last Tuesday night (23-2) and fell at Breckenridge-Wahpeton, Friday (10-2).
This week, the Lakers have a pair of doubleheaders, beginning with a twinbill at home against Morris Area-CA, Tuesday (tomorrow) and continuing with a double-game versus WCA, Thursday.
NLS 23, Minnewaska 2
The Lakers lost a non-conference game at home against NLS last Tuesday night, 23-2. The Wildcats belted out 21 hits and scored 11 runs in the second.
The game ended after four innings due to the 15-run rule.
Jenna Drewes, Ella Roering, Allison Mogard and Mataya Mix had hits for the Lakers, including a homerun by Roering and RBI-single by Mix.
Roering started on the mound and took the loss, while Mix pitched three innings of relief.
NLS’ Emily Ruter was 4-for-5 during the game with a homerun, triple, double, single and six RBI for the cycle. Two other Wildcats had three hits each.
Waska 16-9, Monte 10-4
The Lakers belted out 31 hits and scored 25 runs to earn a doubleheader sweep at home over Montevideo, Thursday, 16-10 and 9-4.
Ally Mogard went 6-for-7 for the Lakers with seven runs scored to lead the Laker offense, while Hallie Schulz was 4-for-7 and Mataya Mix earned both pitching victories.
The wins help raise the Lakers’ season mark to 3-8, which includes a 2-6 mark in the WCC.
During the opening 16-10 win over Montevideo,the Lakers took advantage of eight walks, nine hits, six hit-by-pitch and 14 stolen bases to score at least two runs in every inning.
Carly Jergenson and Ally Mogard both had two hits, three runs, an RBI, stolen base and hit-by-pitch to lead the offense. Emma Poegel, Ella Roering, Hallie Schulz, Eliana Marthaler and Avery Lewison added one hit each as the Lakers scored 16 runs after scoring just 29 total runs through the first nine games combined.
Mataya Mix earned the complete-game win, giving up 10 hits, six earned runs and seven walks with three strikeouts.
• The second game also went the Lakers’ way as Minnewaska Area continued its torrid offense by scoring at least one run in five of its seven at-bats, including three runs in the first inning to take the lead for good.
Mix earned the win again, giving up just four hits, one earned run and two walks with four strikeouts to improve to 3-4 overall on the mound.
Mogard had the big stick for the Lakers, going 4-for-4 with four runs, four RBI, a double, triple and stolen base. Schulz was 3-for-4 with an RBI-double and two stolen bases, while Jenna Drewes added two hits, two runs and four stolen bases.
After recording 14 stolen bases in the first game, the Lakers had 12 more thefts in the second game, including four by Drewes.
Also coming through with hits for the Lakers were Poegel, Lewison and Amanda Lohre.
Breck-Wahp 10, Waska 2
The Lakers dropped a 10-2 decision at Breckenridge-Wahpeton, Friday, although the game was much closer than the final score indicates.
The Lakers scored a run in their first at-bat, but the home team scored two in the first and one in the second to claim a 3-1 lead after two innings. The score stayed that way until the Lakers added another run in the top-half of the sixth to close the gap to 3-2.
However, B-W came back to score seven more runs in the bottom-half of the inning to take control of the game.
Mataya Mix took the loss on the mound, giving up 11 hits, seven earned runs and four walks with five strikeouts, while three Lakers had two hits each to lead the offense.
Ally Mogard was 2-for-4, Ella Roering was also 2-for-4 with a run and stolen base and Eliana Marthaler was 2-for-3. Also coming through with a hit was Haillie Schulz, who had an RBI-double and stolen base, while Jenna Drewes had a run scored, walk and two stolen bases.
