The Minnewaska Area girls track team won the Section 5A True-Team title during a meet at Montevideo last Tuesday night, while the boys team finished third.

The Laker girls earned a berth in this Saturday’s State True-Team Track Meet, while the boys team is hoping to earn a wildcard berth in the meet.

Minnewaska Area also competed at the Melrose Invitational, Thursday, with the girls earning second of 12 teams and the boys placing third.

This week, besides the State True-Team Meet, the Lakers are set to compete in the WCC Track and Field Meet at Morris, Tuesday (tomorrow).

Section true-team

The Minnewaska Area girls track team won the team title at the 10-team Section 5A True-Team Meet last Tuesday night at Montevideo.

The True-Team meet awards teams for having true depth on their team, awarding points to the top 20 place finishers with first getting 20 points, second 19 and so on.

The Lakers totaled 549.5 points to edge Holdingford by 23 points for the overall title.  Minnewaska Area will now compete at the State True-Team Meet, set for this Saturday.

The Minnewaska boys, meanwhile, earned fourth place behind Montevideo, Holdingford and Sauk Centre.  The Laker boys will have a chance to compete in the “virtual” wildcard True-Team Meet, which could ultimately land them back in the State True-Team Meet.

Earning titles for the girls were Ella Larson in the 800 meter run (2:33.15), the 3200 meter relay team of Alia Randt, Piper Citrowske-Lee, Izzy Bautista and Maia Larson (10:51.92), Jayda Kolstoe in the shot put (38-3) and discus (97-2) and Dacia Fleury in the triple jump (33-5 1/2).

The Lakers also had a number of seconds and thirds, including a second by Lauryn Ankeny in the 300 hurdles (47.81), a second by Olivia Danielson in the 1600 (5:42.59) where Maia Larson was also third (5:45.93), the 1600 meter relay team of Aubrey Polzin, Ella Larson, Danielson and Ankeny was third in 4:24.37, Fleury was also second in the long jump (15-7 1/2), Randt was second in the triple jump (30-10), Lexi Bosek earned second in the pole vault (7-6), and Sydney Ankeny was second (12:53.22) and Citrowske-Lee was third (12:54.82) in the 3200 meter run.

•  In the boys competition, the Lakers earned four titles, including two titles by Owen Meulebroeck in the 300 hurdles (40.81) and triple jump (40-2 1/2).  Also earning firsts for the Lakers were Maeson Tank in the 800 meter run (2:03.81) and the 1600 meter relay team of Carter Dinsmore, Jayce Kovarik, Meulebroeck and Tank, which was timed in 3:33.96.

“We knew that it was going to be tight among the top 4 teams in our Section, but Montevideo and Holdingford both had great days to separate themselves a bit,” boys coach Zach Traphagen said.  “We have a very competitive section on the boys side, and while we fell short of winning the meet outright, we wanted to make sure we still put ourselves in a good situation for the Wildcard ‘virtual meet’ that will be calculated this weekend.

“There is still an outside shot we could qualify for State as a wildcard team. We had a lot of kids hit PR’s or season bests today and at these big meets, that’s all you can really ask for from these kids. We’re definitely proud of the boys for coming out and competing their hearts out.”

Adding seconds or thirds for the Lakers were:  Carter Meyer was third in the 100 meter dash (11.1); Tank was also third in the 400 meter dash where the top two finishers were timed in 51.99 and Tank in 52.1; and the 400 meter relay team of Jeythan Quirindongo, Caden Christensen, Kaiden Harvey and Meyer was third in 45.62.

Earning fourths were Meulebroeck in the 110 meter hurdles, Ian Mills in the 3200 meter run, the 800 and 3200 meter relays and Jayce Kovarik in the pole vault

Montevideo led all teams with six individual titles.

Melrose Invitational

The Minnewaska Area girls were second and the boys were third at the 12-team Melrose Invitational, Thursday night.

EVW-Kimball earned the girls title by 21.5 points over the Lakers in a close four-team finish.  The Lakers earned second by two points over third-place Albany and Melrose was 2.5 points back of the Huskies.

Jayda Kolstoe earned the lone first for the Lakers with the title in the shot put (37-9) while also placing third in the discus (96-1).

Dacia Fleury added a second in the 100 meter dash (13.12), second in the triple jump (34-1 1/2) and fifth in the 200 (28.08), while Lauryn Ankeny added a second in the 300 hurdles (48.2) and third in the 100 hurdles (17.49).

Ella Larson placed fourth in the 800 (2:30.38), while Aubrey Polzin was fifth in the 400 (1:04.1), Maia Larson was sixth in the 1600 (5:49.17), Sydney Ankeny was fifth (12:37.81) and Piper Citrowske-Lee was sixth (12:58.13) in the 3200 meter run, Alia Randt was fifth in the triple ump (31-10 1/2), Phemie Oeltjen was fifth in the high jump (4-9) and sixth in the pole vault (7-6), Lexi Bosek was fifth in the pole vault (7-6) and the four relay teams added two thirds, one fifth and one seventh.

•  For the boys team, Owen Meulebroeck, Maeson Tank and the relays were the main point producers.

Tank won the 400 meter dash (51.33) and Meulebroeck placed first in the 300 meter hurdles (40.74), while both also ran on two winning relay teams.

The 800 relay team of Carter Meyer, Kaiden Harvey, Meulebroeck and Tank placed first in 1:32.74 and the 1600 meter relay team of Carter Dinsmore, Jayce Kovarik, Tank and Meulebroeck also placed first with a time of 3:34.46.

Sauk Centre earned the team title with 146 points, followed by EVW-Kimball in second and the Lakers in third.

“We had probably the nicest weather for a meet this year and had some really good times on the track and distances/heights in the field events,” boys head coach Zach Traphagen said.  “This was a good meet for us to try some kids out in other events to kind of break up our lineup a bit from the True Team meet and WCC meet that will be this coming Tuesday.  It’s really nice to see a lot of the kids’ times start to drop a little more with each meet and we anticipate more of that to come as we continue to get the nicer weather.”

Kovarik added a second in the pole vault (12-0), the 400 meter relay team of Jeythan Quirindongo, Caden Christensen, Harvey and Carter Meyer earned second with a time of 45.27, while Dinsmore was also third in the 800 meter run (2:15.71), Meyer placed fourth in the 200 (23.9), Quirindongo was fifth in the 100 (11.59), Ian  Mills was sixth in the 3200 and seventh in the 1600, the 3200 meter relay team was fifth, and Kenneth Czech and Kaiden Harvey added sixths in the discus and triple jump, respectively.
