Girls claim title, boys third at WCC Meet

The Minnewaska Area track and field teams competed at the WCC Track Meet last Tuesday at Morris Area High School. Athletes placing first or second in each event earned All-Conference in track this year while athletes placing third earned honorable mention.
The Minnewaska Area girls continued their great 2024 season with the team title while the boys finished third behind strong teams from Montevideo and Sauk Centre.
The Lakers also raced at the State True-Team Meet, Saturday. Results of that competition can be found in story beginning on page 1B.
This week, Minnewaska Area is set to race at the Sub-section Track Meet at Long Prairie-GE, Thursday.
WCC Track Meet
The girls won six events and the boys earned four titles at the WCC Track Meet at Morris last week.
Minnewaska Area had 168 points to win the 8-team girls meet by 27.5 points over runner-up Melrose while Sauk Centre was third and Benson-KMS fourth. It was the seventh team title for the Laker girls this season.
Winning titles for the Lakers were Dacia Fleury in the 100 meter dash (13.34), Ella Larson in the 800 meter run (2:27.5), Maia Larson in the 1600 meter run (5:36.45), the 3200 meter relay team of Alia Randt, Olivia Danielson, Larson and Lauryn Ankeny (10:01.84), Jayda Kolstoe in the shot put (38-4 3/4) and Melena Longtin in the discus (100-9).
Ankeny added a second in the 300 hurdles (48.12), while Fleury was also third in the 200 (27.73) and second in the triple jump (33-9 3/4), Sydney Ankeny was second in the 3200 (12:46.78), Jillian Deutsch was third in the 3200 (12:52.15), the 1600 meter relay team of Brooklyn Meyer, Aubrey Polzin, Randt and Mya VanLuik placed second in 4:19.27, Kolstoe was also second in the discus (97-10) and Lyla Stadtherr earned second in the high jump (4-9).
• In the boys competition, Montevideo had 171 points to beat Sauk Centre by 31 points for first, while Minnewaska Area was third and Benson-KMS fourth.
Winning titles for the Lakers were Owen Meulebroeck in the 300 hurdles (40.14), Maeson Tank in the 400 (51.69), the 800 meter relay team of Carter Meyer, Kaiden Harvey, Meulebroeck and Tank (1:32.27) and the 1600 meter relay team of Carter Dinsmore, Jayce Kovarik, Meulebroeck and Tank (3:33.99).
Asante Adams added a second in the 100 meter dash (11.4), while Hunter Stadsvold was fourth in the 110 hurdles (17.61), Ian Mills was fourth in the 3200 (11:09.13), Meulebroeck was also second in the triple jump, Kovarik was fourth in the pole vault (12-0), Harvey was fourth in the high jump (5-3) and the 3200 meter relay team of Luke Hoffmann, Josh Hippe, Kovarik and Dinsmore placed third with a time of 9:16.95.
