Hundreds of bikers show up to ‘Ride for a Cause’

June 25, 1964 – Over 1,000 people were expected to attend the first annual Farmers’ Night, sponsored by the Glenwood Chamber of Commerce. On the agenda were entertainment, prizes and free supper, offered to over 1,500 farm family members in the county.

The Rev. William Gustafson, pastor at Glenwood’s First Baptist Church, resigned from his post to go into evangelism work. Gustafson had served in the pastorate for over 30 years, three of those years in Glenwood.

The area was still reeling from a tornado, high winds and other thunderstorm activity which had blown through the area the week before. Damage was still being calculated, especially in the Silver Beach area on Lake Minnewaska and on the shore of Lake Pelican. 

Annele Suojanen, a foreign exchange student who had spent the school year with the Oliver and Dorothy Hoplin family, was leaving Glenwood to return to her home in Helsinki, Finland. She had good things to say about her year here, the community and many things American but “…you are all in such a hurry here…and too many things are artificial.”

June 27, 1974 – Three Glenwood girls were off to Minneapolis to compete in the Our Little Miss pageant there. Heidi Tweit was Glenwood’s Our Little Miss, Michelle Maher was Miss LaPetite and Cheryl Kerfeld was the local talent winner. 

Dr. Gordon Lee was honored for his years of service to the community during a dinner given by the Glenwood Rotary Club. In attendance were Lee’s family and friends, community leaders and medical personnel from the area. Lee said, “I hope you will extend this to everyone else who had done his job as best as he knows how.”

The Rev. Paul Bosshardt took up his position as pastor of the Glenwood United Parish. Bosshardt, his wife Sue and his son Dan came from Spring Valley-Wykoff.

June 28, 1984 – John Dahlseng of Lowry Manufacturing said, “We were fortunate,” following a fire which damaged but did not destroy his Lowry business. The Lowry Fire Department, with mutual aid from Glenwood, contained the blaze. 

A Leven Township man died in a silo accident which injured five others. Silo gas, the byproduct of silage fermentation, was named the culprit.

New royalty for the county’s Midsommernattsfest celebration included Nancy Pederson, Queen Carmen Rust and Nancy Tollefson. Outgoing queen was Kristi Hagen.

Bill Noyes retired from AT&T after over 31 years in the telephone business. He planned to travel and golf in his early retirement. 

The Glenwood Falcons baseball team fell in league play to the Alexandria Clippers in a game held at Knute Nelson Field in Alexandria. Among the Falcon players were John Toop, Ron Robinson, Matt Gavin, Pete Thorfinnson, Tom Moss and Todd Smith. The final score was 10-3.

June 27, 1994 – The 12th annual Starbuck Heritage Days were to be celebrated the weekend of July 1-3. The calendar of events included a grand parade in downtown Starbuck, the Starbuck Jaycees’ haunted house was to be open, a fly-in breakfast at the Starbuck airport, hot air balloon rides, the Little Miss Starbuck pageant and fireworks were to conclude the celebration.

A number of people had taken advantages of classes in woodcarving, rosemaling and quilting from experienced instructors in Terrace. The week ended with a show and sale on the weekend which included musical entertainment.

The Minnewaska Area Schools Board of Education had voted to approve  a letter of intent to turn over all lands related to Central High School to the Save the Auditorium Committee provided the organization provided the school district with an acceptable business plan for preserving the auditorium.

June 14, 2004 – The Relay for Life event was held at Minnewaska Area High School (MAHS) June 18 and 19. The annual event, which celebrated cancer survivors, raised funds for the American Cancer Society. A large crowd of survivors and supporters attended the festivities and raised thousands of dollars for cancer research. The theme for this year’s event was Night at the Oscars.

The city of Glenwood was filled with motorcycles last weekend as the annual fundraising event for Pope County Hospice, Ridin’ for a Cause, was held. This year’s event brought in several hundred motorcycles and riders who rode three routes through this area countryside and communities. The event raises thousands of dollars for the hospice program.  

June 23, 2014 – It was a sunny, warm day on Saturday for the 18th annual Glacial Ridge Hospice Motorcycle Ride, and bikers showed up to “Ride for a Cause.” The annual motorcycle ride helps raise money for the Hospice program, which helps Pope County residents who need the program. Again this year, the Hospice Ride Committee raised more than $20,000 for the cause, thanks to many donations from local businesses and civic organizations. Bikers gathered for the ride on Saturday, displaying many of their bikes at City Park in Glenwood. 

Excavation work began last week on a housing project slated for the Klick Family property along Lake Shore Drive and Minnesota Avenue near Lakeside Ballroom. Constructions crews worked at setting footings for the new facility, which will house a number of condominiums overlooking Lake Minnewaska. 

With the building’s frame constructed, workers added the roof to the retail and office building being constructed on Klick Family property along Minnesota Avenue. The location was where the old Culligan buildings once stood before the Klick Foundation purchased the property, demolished the buildings and went to work building the new facility. 

As 8th-grade musicians transition into the high school groups, it has become a Minnewaska tradition for the band and choir directors to select one boy and one girl from each group to receive the Directors’ Award, honoring their commitment to Minnewaska music. The 2014 Director Awards for choir went to Jake Hoffman and Madelynn Reichmann. The 2014 Director Awards for band went to Rachel Erickson, trumpet, and Mark Longtin, baritone.
