Glenwood-Lowry wins Monte Invite to improve to 11-4

The Glenwood-Lowry Legion baseball team is 11-4 after the first three weeks of the season. The Legion team went 2-2 at a tournament at Alexandria before beating Osakis, June 17. G-L also went 3-1 at a tourney at Omaha and swept a home doubleheader with Sauk Centre, Thursday.
In addition, the team went 3-0 to win the Montevideo Invitational this past weekend, beating Monte in the finals, 5-3. A recap of the Montevideo Invitational will be highlighted next week.
The Legion team has this week off before resuming the schedule Monday, July 8 at Osakis.
at Omaha Tourney
The Glenwood-Lowry Legion competed at a tournament at Omaha, June 20-22, going 3-1. The Lakers fell to Skutt Catholic during the first day of the tourney, Thursday, June 20, 8-0.
Alex Panitzke and Dylan Alexander had the only hits for G-L, which struck out 11 times, while Nathan Dell took the loss on the mound.
PJ Johnson pitched the first three innings, giving up just three hits with four strikeouts, but Skutt scored two runs in the fourth off Dell and then added six more runs in the sixth off two other G-L pitchers.
• The Lakers came back later the first day with a 6-3 win over Norfolk.
Noah Jensen had the key hit, belting a one-out grandslam homerun in the third inning to erase an early 2-0 deficit.
Alex Panitzke went 2-for-3 with a run, walk and stolen base, while Dylan Alexander was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
Ryland Martin earned the pitching victory, giving up five hits and three runs over 5 1/3 innings before Panitzke pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to earn the save.
Nathan Dell and Levi Johnson also had hits for G-L, while Aron Majerus and Jack Majerus also scored runs.
• During action Friday, June 21, the Lakers beat Cobb in the first game, 7-5, getting three hits from Alex Panitzke.
Glenwood-Lowry led 5-1 after two innings and 7-2 after six before Cobb made things interesting with three runs in the seventh inning. Cobb scored three runs and had the bases loaded with two outs before G-L got out of the jam with a groundout to first.
Austin Ballhagen earned the win, giving up 10 hits and five runs over 6 1/3 innings before Jack Majerus came in to get the final two outs.
Offensively, Alex Panitzke went 3-for-4 with a run, stolen base and three RBI. Noah Jensen was 2-for-3 with a run, walk, stolen base and double, while PJ Johnson was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Jack Majerus was 2-for-3 with a run, hit-by-pitch and stolen base.
Also coming through with hits were Ballhagen and Ryland Martin, who also scored twice and walked.
• The Lakers closed out the Omaha Tourney with a 2-0 win over Moorhead, Saturday, June 22.
PJ Johnson spun a one-hitter to earn the victory, while Dylan Alexander keyed the offense by going 2-for-4 with a triple.
G-L scored a run in the third when Martin walked with one out, went to second on a passed ball and came home on a single by Jack Majerus.
The Lakers added another run in the fourth when PJ Johnson led off with a single and came home later on a fielder’s choice. Majerus, Johnson and Austin Ballhagen also had hits for G-L.
Sauk Centre twinbill
The Lakers swept a doubleheader from Sauk Centre, Thursday, winning a tight first game 3-2 and winning by a rout in the nightcap, 13-2.
Ryland Martin pitched a complete game to earn the win in the first game, scattering four hits and giving up two unearned runs.
Dylan Alexander and Levi Johnson had two hits each to lead the offense, while Austin Ballhagen also had a hit and Nathan Dell and Marc Gruber both scored once and walked twice.
The Lakers scored the winning run in the seventh when Alexander led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a single by Ballhagen and scored on a one-out fielder’s choice by Dell.
• In the second game, Alex Panitzke earned the pitching victory, while Panitzke, Dylan Alexander and Noah Jensen supplied most of the offense.
Panitzke went 3-for-5 with an RBI and stolen base, while Alexander was 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI, walk and two doubles, and Noah Jensen continued his torrid streak this spring and summer with a pair of homeruns and four RBI.
Jensen had a two-run blast with two outs in the first and also hit a two-run homer in the fifth.
Connor Erickson also had two hits for the Lakers, while Austin Ballhagen, Levi Johnson, Nathan Dell and Zach Gugisberg also had hits for G-L.
