The Glenwood-Lowry Legion baseball team edged Montevideo, 5-3, for the championship of the Montevideo Invitational last weekend.

The Lakers improved to 11-4 overall with three wins at the tournament over MACCRAY (9-0), Anoka (9-8) and Montevideo.

The win over Montevideo was especially sweet after the Thunderhawks edged Minnewaska Area for the Section 3AA baseball title this past spring, 3-2.

During the Montevideo Tourney, the Lakers had three-straight complete-game pitching performances from Austin Ballhagen, PJ Johnson and Nathan Dell while Noah Jensen was 5-for-8 at the plate, Connor Erickson and Alex Panitzke were both 4-for-9 and Dylan Alexander was 4-for-10.

Glenwood-Lowry did not have any games scheduled last week and was set to resume its schedule Monday (tonight) at Osakis followed by a game vs. Brooten at home, Thursday, July 11.

The WC Sub-State includes Ashby, Benson-Hancock, Brooten, Cottonwood, Granite Falls, KMS, Sacred Heart, Madison, Glenwood-Lowry, Montevideo, Morris, Parkers Prairie, Sauk Centre, Wheaton, Breckenridge, Prinsburg and Bird Island.

Austin Ballhagen won his third game this summer with the complete-game shutout.  He scattered two hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

Offensively, Connor Erickson was 2-for-3 with a run, double and two RBI, while Jack Majerus, Alex Panitzke, Noah Jensen and Levi Johnson also had hits.

Glenwood-Lowry took an early 6-2 lead, but then fell behind 8-6 before rallying for a 9-8 victory over Anoka in the second game of the Montevideo Tourney.

The Lakers outhit the visitors from the Twin Cities, 12-7, and among Glenwood-Lowry’s hits were four doubles and one triple.

Noah Jensen went 3-for-3 with a run, walk, double and three RBI, while Alex Panitzke was 2-for-4 with two runs and a double and Dylan Alexander was 2-for-4 with a run, two RBI and another double.

The Lakers got the tying and winning runs across in the sixth inning when Panitzke doubled with one out, came home on a double by Alexander and Alexander came home one batter later on a single by Jensen.

Panitzke started on the mound, but left after four innings with the score tied at 6-6.  PJ Johnson pitched the final three innings to record the win.  He allowed two hits, two runs and four walks with three strikeouts.

Also coming through with hits for the Lakers were Jack Majerus, PJ Johnson, Connor Erickson, Levi Johnson and Austin Ballhagen.

Glen-Low 5, Monte 3

The Lakers led 3-0 after 1 1/2 innings, but Montevideo tied it up with three runs of its own over the second and third innings.

Glenwood-Lowry scored two more runs in the top-half of the fourth and that was just enough to earn the 5-3 victory.

Nathan Dell allowed 10 hits, two earned runs and one walk in earning the complete-game win.  He also struck out four.

G-L was outhit 10-9, but the Lakers also had the benefit of seven walks and one Montevideo error.

Dylan Alexander was 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the offense, while Jack Majerus, Alex Panitzke, Noah Jensen, Connor Erickson, Levi Johnson, Austin Ballhagen and Dell had one hit each.

The Lakers got the winning run in the fourth when Ballhagen led off with a single, was sacrificed to second by Nathan Dell and moved to third on a passed ball.

Panitzke also walked with two outs and advanced to second on a walk to Alexander, which loaded the bases.

Jensen came through with the big hit for the Lakers, rapping a single to score Ballhagen and Panitzke and sending Alexander to second.

Riley Dell walked to load the bases, but Montevideo got out of the jam without further damage with a strikeout.  Overall, the Lakers left 13 runners on base.
