Ordinance changes designation of streets and avenues
Aug. 6, 1964 – The Glenwood City Commission gave a first reading to an ordinance changing the designation of city streets and avenues. Streets running north and south would be given numerical designations with others named in alphabetical order. Minnesota, Franklin, and North and South Lakeshore drives would remain as they had been.
Pope County joined the ranks of drought-stricken Minnesota counties when it was named a disaster area. Farmers would be eligible for emergency grazing and haying privileges on soil bank land.
The city of Glenwood was enforcing a sprinkling ban due to the dry conditions.
A group of Glenwood girls won first place in an American Legion-sponsored choral competition in Minneapolis. They were Teresa Stone, Sandra Fjoslien, Janet Femrite, Debbie Ostrander, Cathy Forbes, Christine Flom, Kristin Kinney and Linda Carlson.
The Lake Reno Reformed Presbyterian Church had a new pastor. He was the Rev. Harold Harrington, who arrived in the area from Arizona to replace the Rev. Wayne Spear
Aug. 8, 1974 – The Glenwood City Commission was just waiting to see what the city of Brainerd would do regarding a state mandate that said that all city water supplies must be treated with fluoride.
Glenwood and Brainerd were among the largest communities in the state to take up sides against the state law. Brainerd said the law was an infringement of rights; Glenwood maintained its opposition on the basis of cost.
The county’s small grain harvest was “better than expected,” according to the Pope County Tribune. Area elevator managers were quoted as saying that results – yields and test weights – were spotty and definitely down from the previous year’s bumper crop.
Preliminary data from a user survey of Lake Minnewaska showed that over 90 percent of the lake’s users lived outside Pope County. Assisting in the survey were Jack Morris, Bill Bailey, Bruce Thorfinnson, and Mike Howe. Thorfinnson and two of his high school students, Les LaCroix and Dave Skilbred, were also measuring the water quality of several area lakes.
A Tribune editorial urged the resignation of President Richard Nixon following a nationwide “near crisis” in the wake of Watergate.
Aug. 9, 1984 – The Pope County Fair was about to get underway. In charge of arrangements for the annual event were members of the Pope County Fair Board including John Reed, Marge Engebretson, Roger Hermes, Arne Stoen, Roger Maanum, Dean Oeltjen, Jerry Jensen, Roger Tollefson, DeWayne Larson, Gordy Wagner and Mark Fred Erickson. Representatives from the extension office were Jack Morris, Jim Onerheim and Karen Thompson.
A 23-year-old Minneapolis trucker died when his vehicle overturned on Hwy. No. 28 just west of Villard. Authorities speculated that he might have dozed at the wheel just before the mid-morning accident.
Aug. 8, 1994 – Drawings for the proposed addition and renovation of the Glenwood Public Library was revealed during the Glenwood City Commission’s meeting. They were also published on the front page of the Tribune. Approximately 2,000 square feet were to be added to the back (south side) of the Carnegie building. The total cost of the project was to be between $200,000 and $300,000.
Thirty-four members of the Pope County Agricultural Society had met in a special session and voted 32-2 to authorize the fair board to negotiate the transfer of 6.3 acres of the southern portion of the fairgrounds to the city or interested developers. Current plans were that the cattle, poultry, horse barn, and horse arena would remain. The nine buildings on the site would be reduced to four at the new site.
Becky Nelson, of Starbuck, had recently returned from Dallas, Texas, where she was honored by being named to the National Queen’s Court of Personal Sales for Mary Kay. She had received a diamond ring for her efforts which included being first in sales in the Alexandria/Glenwood area.
One of the longest held businesses has changed hands as Villard Elevator and Implement sold the elevator and feed portion of its business to employee Richard Kein and two other investors.
Aug. 2, 2004 – The 2004 Pope County Fair swept through town this week bringing new faces, great weather, and a successful first Family Day. “The weather was perfect,” said Fair Board Secretary Sharon Nelson. “Weather can make or break a fair. Thursday night the go-carts weren’t able to run, but otherwise it’s been great.”
Mike Dobbelmann, son of Darrell and Ellen Dobbelmann, of Glenwood, had just finished a bike trip from San Diego, Calif., to Vancouver, B.C., Canada. The trip was part of Project Venture, raising money for organizations and relief programs like CRY (Care and Relief for the Young). This was Mike’s third summer biking around the world and raising money for various projects overseas.
Aug. 4, 2014 – Waterama’s Show & Shine Auto and Cycle show drew crowds to Barsness Park in Glenwood on Waterama Saturday, July 26, to appreciate the vintage vehicles on display. Entries were so good, there was a three-way tie for first place in the auto category this year! Auto category winner: Gary Krukoski, of Forada, with his 1933 MG J2. Auto category winner: Dale Searcy, of Glenwood, with his 1973 Ford Gran Torino. Auto category winner: Brandi Otto, of Glenwood, with her 1949 Chevy pick-up. Bikes category winner: Todd Gylsen, of Glenwood, with his 1938 NSU 5010SL. People’s Choice winner: Troy Tofteland, of Brandon, S.D., with his 1968 Pontiac Firebird.
Children of all ages performed in the Terrace Mill Children’s Theater production of Metaphasia in Terrace on July 23 and 24 for appreciative crowds. Billed as “a radically updated retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses,” the story involves a brother and a sister who are told they are moving away from their current house.
Members of local Boy Scout Troop 423 recently traveled to Medora, N.D. to provide community service. While there they conducted flag-raising and lowering ceremonies, recycling and clean-up projects. In their free time, the boys explored the area through hiking, horseback riding, and learning about the history and geology of the Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The scouts included Austyn Griesert, Brandon Wacker, William Foner, Henry Foner, Tanner Schafer, Tyler Anderson, Zachary Schafer and Zach Morton. The adults on the trip were Kristi Anderson, Steve Bodeker, Mark Foner, Kirk Schafer and Mike Morton.
The 2014 Pope County Senior Citizen Volunteers were recognized on Senior Day at the Pope County Fair on July 24.
