Several recognized at fair
Aug. 13, 1964 – A Mankato man was hired to head up the personnel department of Assembly Homes. He was the Rev. Jacob Myers, who would also serve as administrator of the Lakeview Nursing Home.
Five Pope County boys and girls won themselves a trip to the Minnesota State Fair during the county’s annual 4-H Demonstration Day. They were Dale Peterson with an entomology demonstration, Vicky Egdorf with a demonstration on foods, Marjory Forbord with “Ironing Board Magic,” Adele Swenson with “Pick and Place Picture” and Connie Amundon with a demonstration on sewing and patterns.
Fall weather moved into the area with some rain, though not enough to do any crops any good, and cold temperatures. Highs for at least a couple of days only reached 60 degrees.
Groundbreaking ceremonies were held for a 28-bed infirmary wing addition to the Glenwood Retirement Home.
Aug. 15, 1974 – Warren Braaten was named to the District No. 612 school board to finish the term of Bob Robards, who left the district. Braaten was a Barsness township resident and the father of three boys.
Herman Rosholt, a retired Cyrus farmer, had received the Soil Society of America’s Honor Award for his leadership in the areas of soil and water conservation, including irrigation, research and organizing the county board. The award was presented to Rosholt in Syracuse, N.Y.
The Tribune said that county fairs are good for politicians and pictured some of the same who had visited the Pope County Fair, including Bob Berglund, Wayne Schumacher, Jim Gremmels and Delbert Anderson.
Mary and Mark Thompson made winning a family affair as they grabbed some top honors at the Pope County Fair. Mary exhibited the champion dairy calf and was named champion dairy showman while Mark exhibited the champion advanced cow which was also named the grand champion dairy cow.
Aug. 16, 1984 – A signing program to identify county residents with emergency numbers was underway. A total of 18 Pope County townships and Long Beach were participating in the program.
Fewer numbers and lower prices meant lower gross revenues for those participating in the annual 4-H auction following the Pope County Fair. This 32nd annual auction saw revenues of over $3,000 less than in 1983.
Among those named 4-H exhibit winners at the fair were Richard Lundebrek in aerospace, Curt Reese in conservation, Troy Erickson in safety, Tammy Zavadil in breads, Michelle Maher in forestry, Kathy Bentler in child care and Matthew Mattson in electricity.
Aug. 15, 1994 – R.E. Gandrud, president of Pope County State Bank (PCSB) in Glenwood, announced that the PCSB had signed a definitive purchase agreement to acquire the Bank of Elbow Lake and the State Bank of Wendell from Grant County Bancshares, Inc. He said that the proposed acquisition of the two banks was subject to regulatory and shareholder approval. Both the Bank of Elbow Lake and the State Bank of Wendell would operate as offices of the Glenwood bank.
A benefit supper was set for Aug. 25 at the Glenwood Fire Hall for the Mark Juvrud family of Glenwood. Mark had been diagnosed with leukemia. Proceeds from the dinner were to go toward a bone marrow transplant.
Despite the rain on Tuesday, the 1994 Pope County Fair was “wonderful” according to Chuck Larson, fair manager. He said some of the more well-attended events were the Johnny Holm show, the donkey racing and the tractor and pick-up pull. The fair concluded with a demolition derby on Thursday night.
Fourteen talent acts were on stage during the third annual talent contest held during the Pope County Fair. Winning first place in each of the three divisions were Paul Greene in the open division, Beth Peterson in the teen division and the Dollies dance group from Dancin’ Off Broadway. The first-place winner in each division was eligible for the talent show at the Minnesota State Fair.
Aug. 9, 2004 – Twenty-four-year-old Sarah Lang, formerly of Glenwood, had settled down in Key West, Fla., and started a business. Daughter of Larry and Jean Lang, Sarah graduated from Minnewaska Area High School in 1998 and set off to see the world. After studying abroad for one semester in Australia, she transferred her credits and stayed there for three years. After traveling extensively, she chose to stay in Key West, Fla., and started S&J’s Internet Café and Key Lime Pie.
On Saturday, July 31, at 8 a.m., the Glenwood city beach was buzzing with busy athletes changing from swim caps to bicycle helmets during the 2nd Annual Lake Minnewaska Triathlon. The event drew in hundreds of athletes, not to mention spectators that were scatted all across Lakeshore Drive.
Aug. 11, 2014 – The 7th Annual Starbuck Dragon Boat races took place Aug. 8-9 at Starbuck City Park. The event kicked off with a dinner on Friday evening and the parade of teams and dragon boat racing on Saturday. First Security Bank, of Benson, won the Gold Division First Place trophy.
Brady Carter (Senior), Sydney Blair (Intermediate) and Jamison Reed (Junior) earned the highest honors in the 4-H Round Robin showmanship competition at the Pope County Fair as 2014 Round Robin Champions. Round Robin is a unique competition in that it puts contestants’ showmanship skills to the test by having them show a wide variety of animals, not just the ones with which they’re familiar. Reserve Round Robin Champions were Ashton Dingman (Junior), Colin Weidauer (Intermediate) and Taylor Lundebrek (Senior).
Geri L. Krueger, of Glenwood, has been appointed by the Minnesota Supreme Court as a member of the Supreme Court Advisory Committee on the Rules of Juvenile Protection Procedure and Adoption Procedure for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2014 and ending June 30, 2017. Members of these committees are from diverse backgrounds; they are appointed for their knowledge and expertise in areas that will be beneficial to the committee as they propose recommendations for changes to existing rules.
