Glenwood women completes second cross-country bicycle trip

Sept. 17, 1964 – A record 1,423 students started school. Pictured in the Tribune with kindergarten teacher Rosemarie Tomes were Kirt Peterson, Angela Tauber and Shari Bredeson. Part of the increase in enrollment came from the Lowry students now being a part of District No. 612.

A couple of longtime Glenwood businesses were experiencing changes. The Haldorson family sold its hardware business to John and Lillian Caskey. Lewis Haldorson, 97, had started the business in 1914 and was to be honored at an open house for his 50 years in downtown Glenwood. Harry Setter, longtime Glenwood druggist, was cited for his 36 years in the pharmacy business. During that time he had filled over 1,000,000 prescriptions.

The “off again – on again” matter of the renaming of Glenwood streets was on again. Now it appeared that some, at least, would be identified by numbers.

Eight Pope County farmers were among 20 arrested during demonstration by the National Farmers Organization. The eight were allegedly involved in the beating of a Sauk Centre trucker who had been hauling livestock.

Sept. 19, 1974 – Kaldahl Resort in Long Beach, which had been in the same family for the past 60 years, changed hands when it was bought by Mr. and Mrs. Marv Swanberg. Kaldahl Kamp was purchased from Fred Helbing by Edwin Kaldahl in 1914 and had been run since 1941 by the Tuddy Kaldahls.

About 700 small muskies were released in Lake Minnewaska by the Department of Natural Resources. A similar number had been “planted” two years earlier. Survival rate for the fish was expected to be high.

Everell Barsness was named vice commodore of the city’s Waterama celebration. Barsness, an employee of the county highway department, joined Admiral Gordy Jacobson and commodore Cal Shuckhart in heading up the 1975 event. 

Sept. 13, 1984 – The Glenwood City Commission was discussing a $1.6 million budget package. The discussion took four hours at one commission meeting during which time commissioners trimmed the year’s increase down to 5.8 percent. Financing the increase would require an increase in the tax levy of 7 percent.

Glenwood’s annual Waterama festival ended the 1984 year in the black, and, with the “black” from the previous year had a balance of just under $10,000. The “red ink” had been generally erased in 1981 when the Waterama committee had collected $6,500 in an insurance settlement for its Sunday parade “rain” policy.

Clint and Bernice Wheeler donated a log home that had been in his family for around 120 years to the Pope County Historical Society. Fourteen children had been born in the cabin of Knud Torguson.

Sept. 19, 1994 – Three accidents had claimed two lives in Pope County. A Brooten man was killed on Saturday, Sept. 17, as a result of a two-vehicle accident which occurred three miles east of Terrace on Highway 104. A 50-year-old Cyrus man was killed Friday, Sept. 16, when he lost control of a motorcycle he was driving west on County Road 24 in Minnewaska Township. As of the date of this paper, an 18-year-old Lowry man remained in critical condition following a one-vehicle accident on Thursday, Sept. 15, on Highway 114 north of Lowry.

The fourth annual homecoming at Minnewaska Area High School was to be observed the week of Sept. 26-30. Homecoming candidates were pictured in the Tribune. Queen candidates were Char Birt, Jessie Gregersen, Kelly Nichtern, Andrea Nelsen, Melissa Listug, Jenny Lundebrek, Shana Hofstad, Tammy Koob and Melissa Stammer. King candidates were Dan Guggisberg, Luke Anderson, Corey Holte, Will Cooley, Ryan Erdman, Mitch Johnsrud, Jackson Burns, Josh Zimmerman and Matt Shea. Attendants and escorts also pictured in the Tribune were Andy Johnsrud, Jenny Holtberg, Jaimie Nelson, Chris Stadick, Tiffany Englund and Andrew Bösl. Junior royalty from the first-grade class at Villard Elementary School were Tiffany Kocher and Matt Bailey.

Sept. 13, 2004 – How does one couple from Glenwood have the power to change the world? To know the answer the Tribune asked locals Earl and Joyce Hauge. They had used their knowledge, finances and love to reach out to three refugees of southern Sudan, sending them to college to make a difference in their own country.

Karen DeMorett of Glenwood had just returned from a 4,200-mile bicycle trip across the northern United States. This 71-day ride, from Anacordes, Wash., to Bar Harbor, Maine, was DeMorett’s second cross-country trip. “It’s a great way to see the country,” she said. DeMorett traveled with a group of 21 women riders, each choosing a cause to ride for. DeMorett chose the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. 

Dave McClurg of Glenwood was a winner in the University of Minnesota State Fair Know Your U contest Sunday, Aug. 29. The contest, part of the annual University of Minnesota Maroon and Gold Day at the Fair, tested participants’ knowledge of the U of M on subjects ranging from its history, current affairs to athletics.

Pope County had several winners at the 2004 Minnesota State Fair. Pictured in the Tribune were Laura Pasche, who was named the champion in Intermediate Poultry Showmanship; James Cihlar showed off his champion young utility pigeon; and Jamie Eblen exhibited her champion young fancy pigeon. The general livestock judging team for the combined counties of Pope, Stevens and Douglas 4-H teams took reserve champion honors. The team included John Oelke, Rachel Anderson, Justin Johnson, Dylan Spader and coaches Chris Hall and Grant Anderson. The Minnewaska FFA dairy judging team of Katie Klimek, Laura Thompson and Lisa Thompson, took third place at the Minnesota State Fair competition. This team was coached by Dave Thompson.  

Sept. 15, 2014 – Glenwood Mayor Bill Ogdahl was pictured in the Tribune officially cutting the ribbon on the newly expanded CHS Propane Terminal, located on the east side of Highway 55 in Glenwood. The event featured talks by aides from Sen. Al Franken’s office and from Congressman Collin Peterson’s office. It also featured a number of CHS board members, employees, Rep. Paul Anderson and city commission and city staff members.

A residential development overlooking Lake Minnewaska, “The Pearl on Lake Minnewaska,” was, at the time, a diamond in the rough, but was on track to be polished smooth in just a few short months. The three-level, 23-unit complex was being built by Klick Companies along North Lakeshore Drive was slated for completion in February 2015.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, when had begun soaking the globe that summer, had recently got its icy grip on some truly dedicated bank employees. Staff at Eagle Bank in Glenwood accepted the challenge and lined up beneath two giant “buckets” of ice water, compliments of their challenger, Curt Weber and Midwest Machinery.
