The Minnewaska Area girls tennis team is on a roll.  The Lakers earned six victories over the last week, including three wins over state-ranked opponents.

That not only gave the Lakers an overall record of 11-3, but it also helped Minnewaska Area earn a third-place ranking in state Class A.

The Lakers, who are also 4-0 in the conference, were set to play three home matches this week, starting with a makeup match with Montevideo, Monday, and continuing with LQP-DB, Tuesday (tomorrow) and Benson-KMS, Thursday.

Pine City quadrangular

The Lakers went 3-0 at the Pine City quadrangular last Saturday, including two wins by 4-3 scores.  McKenna Uhde and Katy Vold led the way for Minnewaska with 3-0 records, playing with multiple partners and combining to win four tiebreakers. In addition, Rachel Rankin went 3-0 playing singles and doubles to raise her season mark to 13-2.

The Lakers beat NLS, 7-0, giving up just one set at first doubles where Vold and Rachel Rankin prevailed in a tight three-setter, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 tiebreaker.

McKenna Uhde and Katie Sorenson also won 7-5, 6-4 at third doubles while in the other five matches combined, the Lakers lost just 14 total games.

•  The other two matches were against top-10 opponents and the Lakers were able to pull out 4-3 wins.

Minnewaska Area went with a strong doubles’ lineup against Pine City as Rachel Rankin won at second singles (6-2, 6-2) and the Lakers also swept doubles as Alia Randt and Olivia Danielson combined for a straight-set win at first doubles, Avarie Uhde and Vold earned a 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 tiebreaker win at second doubles, and McKenna Uhde and Norah VanZee won 2-6, 6-2, 10-5 tiebreaker at third doubles.

•  The Lakers used a strong singles’ lineup against the host team and Minnewaska utilized two singles’ wins and two doubles’ victories to earn the 4-3 win.

Rankin won 6-3, 6-0 at third singles and Kaylen Blair prevailed 6-2, 6-1 at fourth singles, and the Lakers also picked up two points by Thorfinnson and Avarie Uhde at first doubles (2-6, 6-0, 11-9 tiebreaker) and by Vold and Addy Heid at second doubles (6-2, 4-6, 11-9 tiebreaker).

The Lakers played in seven tiebreakers during the quadrangular, winning five of them.

Waska 4, Osakis 3

The Lakers won their sixth-straight match with a 4-3 victory at Osakis last Monday night.  Osakis placed second in last year’s Section 6A Tourney, is ranked second in state this fall and is seen as one of the favorites in the section again this year.

Olivia Danielson won the only singles’ point for the Lakers with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at third singles.

In doubles, the Lakers won all three matches in straight sets as Avarie Uhde and Rachel Rankin teamed up for a 6-3, 6-1 victory at first doubles, Katy Vold and Addy Heid won 6-1, 6-1 at second doubles, and Katie Sorenson and McKenna Uhde earned a hardfought three-set win at third doubles for the fourth point, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3.

Minnewaska 7, YME 0

The Lakers improved to 3-0 in the conference with a 7-0 sweep of Yellow Medicine East last Tuesday night. Minnewaska also improved to 10-3 overall as the Lakers lost just three total games in the seven matches combined.  In other words, it was total domination by the Lakers.

Playing singles for the Lakers were Alia Randt, Megan Thorfinnson, Olivia Danielson and Kaylen Blair, who gave up two total games at first through fourth singles, respectively, while Minnewaska Area also earned wins by Rachel Rankin and Avarie Uhde at first doubles (6-0, 6-0), Katy Vold and Addy Heid at second doubles (6-0, 6-0) and McKenna Uhde and Katie Sorenson at third doubles (6-0, 6-1).

Waska 7, Melrose 0

The Lakers improved to 6-0 over a six-day span with the 7-0 sweep of Melrose, Thursday night at home.

It was another dominating performance by Minnewaska Area, which gave up eight games in the four singles’ matches and six in doubles.

Alia Randt earned a shutout at first singles, while Megan Thorfinnson won by an injury default at second singles, Olivia Danielson won 6-2, 6-0 at third singles and Kaylen Blair earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory at fourth singles.

In doubles, Avarie Uhde and Rachel Rankin teamed up for a 6-3, 6-0 win at first doubles, Katy Vold and Addy Heid lost just one game in winning 6-1, 6-0 at second doubles, and McKenna Uhde and Katie Sorenson won easily at third doubles, 6-2, 6-0.
