The Minnewaska Area-Morris Area Gators swimming and diving team improved to 4-0 in dual meets with a 98-82 victory over Montevideo last Tuesday at the pool on the Minnewaska Area High School campus.
The Gators also raced at the Park Rapids Invitational last Saturday, placing fourth of four teams.
This week, the Gators have a meet at Melrose Area set for Thursday, Sept. 26. In addition, the Gators were also set to swim and dive at the Fergus Falls Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 21 and results of those two competitions will be highlighted next week.
Park Rapids Invite
The Gators swam at the Park Rapids Invitational last Saturday in a four-team meet won by a strong Melrose Area team.
The Gators had three titles during the meet as Melena Longtin won the 50 yard freestyle event (25.85), Lyla Stadtherr won the 100 yard breaststroke (1:14.15) and Clare Barnstuble (194.1 points) and Ella Roering (190.85) placed first and second in the diving.
Melrose also had three titles, but its overall depth helped it amass 440 points while Park Rapids had 314 points to place second, Sauk Centre was third with 302 points and the Gators were fourth with 231. All four teams had three titles each.
“The Gators did a good job at Park Rapids; it was nice to get to a new pool and see two teams from our conference (Melrose and Sauk Centre) and one from our section (Park Rapids),” coach Sam Oellien said. “We had a lot of great dives and races. Overall, it was a good day for the Gators.”
Minnewaska-Morris was also second in the 200 medley relay with Becca Femrite, Lyla Stadtherr, Mesa Kittelson and Longtin in 2:00.72, Longtin was also fourth in the 100 freestyle (57.64), Stadtherr placed fourth in the 50 free (26.15), Mesa Kittelson was seventh in the 100 butterfly (1:12.11), Femrite was also fourth in the 500 freestyle (6:07.2), the 200 freestyle relay team of Kittelson, Sydney Gibson, Femrite and Stadtherr was third (1:50.53), and in the final event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay team of Kittelson, Gibson, Femrite and Longtin placed second in 4:06.6.
“These invites can be tough with lots of obstacles for the Gators and it is also a long day of competition, which can wear on some athletes,” coach Oellien said. “I am still impressed with the passion these girls have for their sport and for all the hard work they put in.”
