Third-ranked tennis team improves to 16-3

The Minnewaska Area girls tennis team is approaching the final key stretch of its season.
The Lakers went 5-0 over the last week of play, going 2-0 at the Alexandria quadrangular last Saturday and also winning three WCC matches at home against Montevideo last Monday (4-3), vs. LQP-DB last Tuesday (7-0) and against Benson-KMS, Thursday (6-1).
The Lakers improved to 7-0 in the conference and 16-3 overall heading into the final week of the regular-season.
Minnewaska Area was set to play at Morris Area-CA, Tuesday (tomorrow) before playing at the WCC Individual Tourney, Saturday at Alexandria.
The start of the Section 6A Team Tourney is Oct. 2 and 3 and Litchfield, Minnewaska Area and Osakis will most likely earn the top three seeds in a tough and loaded section tournament.
Alexandria quad
The Lakers earned a pair of close wins at the Alexandria quadrangular, Saturday, Sept. 14. Minnewaska Area improved to 13-3 overall by beating Alexandria (5-2) and Wadena-DC (6-1).
Rachel Rankin, Olivia Danielson and Avarie Uhde each went 2-0 at first through third singles, respectively, while Katy Vold and Addy Heid also went 2-0 at second doubles.
Alia Randt and Megan Thorfinnson added a fifth point against Alexandria, playing at first doubles (7-5, 6-3), while against WDC, Kaylen Blair earned a victory at fourth singles (3-6, 6-4, 10-3 tiebreaker) and McKenna Uhde and Katie Sorenson earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at third doubles.
Waska 4, Montevideo 3
The Lakers moved one step closer to a 10th-straight WCC title with a 4-3 home win over Montevideo last Tuesday night.
Minnewaska knew it was going to be a close match, but it ended up being almost too close. The Lakers earned two wins in singles as Alia Randt won 6-2, 6-4 at first singles and Olivia Danielson earned a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at third singles.
In doubles, the Lakers earned two more key wins as Rachel Rankin and Avarie Uhde teamed up for a 6-2, 6-4 win at first doubles and Katy Vold and Addy Heidi stayed hot together as a team with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at second doubles.
“I think our team played a little flat today, but thankfully, we had some great play at a few positions,” coach Reichmann said. “We will have to step it up a notch if we hope to compete for a section title.”
The Lakers lost a close two-setter at second singles and a three-setter at third doubles.
Minnewaska 7, LQP-DB 0
The Lakers earned their fifth shutout of the season with a 7-0 win over LQP-DB last Tuesday night on the home courts.
Minnewaska Area allowed 12 games in doubles and also gave up seven games in singles.
Alia Randt (6-0, 6-1), Megan Thorfinnson (6-0, 6-0), Olivia Danielson (6-2, 6-0) and Kaylen Blair (6-2, 6-2) earned four quick wins for the Lakers while Katy Vold and Addy Heid also won easily in straight sets at second doubles (6-1, 6-1).
In the other two matches, things were a little tighter as Avarie Uhde and Rachel Rankin won 6-4, 6-2 at first doubles and McKenna Uhde and Katie Sorenson closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at third doubles.
Waska 6, BKMS 1
The Lakers moved within one victory of another conference title after beating Benson-KMS at home, Thursday, 6-1.
Alia Randt improved to 17-6 for the season with a 6-3, 6-3 win at first singles, while Megan Thorfinnson upped her record to 18-5 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at second singles, and Olivia Danielson improved to 21-2 overall with a shutout over her BKMS opponent at third singles.
The Lakers also swept the three doubles’ matches with Avarie Uhde (18-5 record) and Rachel Rankin (21-2) continuing their great play at first doubles with a 6-0, 6-1 win, Katy Vold and Addy Heid both ran their record to 18-5 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at second doubles and McKenna Uhde (15-8) and Katie Sorenson (15-7) earned another shutout for the Lakers at third doubles.
