From Nov. 20, 1914

Rev. Anton Belgum of Akeley, Minn., will take the place of Rev. Bale. Rev. Bale’s congregations have been at Terrace and Bars-ness. Rev. Bale will go to Fergus Falls, where he will make his home. He will retire from the ministry. Rev. Belgum preached his first sermon last Sunday.

The White Lily Restaurant has changed hands again. Anton C. Berg and Henry J. Lund bought it from Mr. and Mrs. B.M. Johnson. The firm name will be Lund & Berg. The restaurant has a splendid patronage, and the boys intend to increase this by giving the public better service.

The directors of the Farmers Elevator company had a meeting at New Prairie last week and let the contract for the rebuilding of the elevator. Larson Brothers will do the work.

A large crowd was present at the rag ball social in District 88, near Gandrud’s, on Saturday evening and they also took in the “movies” at the same place.

100 YEARS AGO

From Nov. 21, 1924

About 800 people attended the cornerstone laying and dedication services in Fron congregation last Sunday. Pastors Stormo, Forde, Palmer and Linnevold assisted in the reading of the scripture passages, and the cornerstone was laid by Rev. M. Casper Johnshoy, pastor of Fron congregation was cemented in place by Emil Larson, the contractor who built the church parlors.

Last Saturday evening a large cross was seen burning on the hill north of town, and caused considerable excitement in the village. There were three large letters on it: KKK. Unverified rumors have been going the rounds since that there are some Klan members in the village, and that the Klan plans to clean up some “blind pigs” in the vicinity. It is claimed that those who set up the cross came here in a new Chevrolet car from the south, and returned the same way shortly before the burning cross was noticed.

Miss Marie Flaten of Glenwood and L.B. Stocking, former well-known and popular resident of Starbuck, were married last week in California. Miss Flaten left a week ago Monday for California, although most of her friends believed she was making a trip east, and were completely surprised.

90 YEARS AGO

From Nov. 22, 1934

The Jr. class of the Starbuck High School will present the three-act comedy “Take my Advice” on Nov. 27. Miss Lillian Charlesworth is coaching this play. The following juniors are included in the cast: Lloyd Landmark, Carlton Wollan, Philip Hagert, Melvin Kjonass, Karen Tolstad, Phyllis Sanvik, Joyce Erickson and Verna Erickson.

Mrs. Petra Scheflo and Mr. Alfred Kleven were united in marriage at the Indherred parsonage on Saturday by Rev. G.O. Forde. Their attendants were Miss Anna Grondahl and Peter Barsness.

Mr. and Mrs. H.O. Bugge of Walden Township were pleasantly surprised Sunday after services at the Immanuel Church when several hundred of their friends and relatives gathered to help them celebrate their Silver Wedding Anniversary.

Mr. and Mrs. George Wesen are the parents of a baby boy, born Sunday, Nov. 18.

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hoverud, Nov. 10.

The following from Starbuck had been ordered for induction into the Armed Forces Nov. 27: Berdeen M. Hagen, Harold Hagen, Truman Anondson, Ralph Brevig and Gerald Wesen. The following had been ordered for pre-induction physical examinations for the Armed Forces Nov. 27: Clinton Hagen, Franklin Braaten, Raymond Aslakson, Eldon Pochardt, Dorvan Moen and Lloyd Thompson.

Lettermen returning for the opening of the basketball season at Starbuck High School were: Richard Peterson, Jerome Otteson, Walter Larson, Henrick Sylvester, Jerome Hoium and Lyle Hanson. Emroy Stedje, a member of last year’s strong Kensington team, had transferred to Starbuck; the Stedje family had moved here from Kensington in the summer.

Donna Mae’s Ladies Apparel Shop would be opening in the Emahiser building and would be owned and operated by Mrs. Emahiser.

From Nov. 18, 1954

The community was saddened when word was received here that William Saari, football and basketball coach here for four years, had died during a heart attack Saturday morning at Crosby-Ironton where he was the athletic instructor this year. Funeral services were held Monday morning at his hometown of Gilbert.

Irwin Edward Stangeland of Starbuck and Lyn Dale Elwood Hendrickson of Glenwood are among those ordered for induction Nov. 29.

Miss Joyce Harrison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Harrison of Morris and Norman W. Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Meyer of Starbuck, were married Nov. 5 at Peace Lutheran Church in Morris. The couple will make their home on a farm near Starbuck.

Pvt. Otto Byhre, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto V. Byhre of Starbuck is nearing completion of basic infant training at Fort Leonardwood with a unit of the 6th Armored Division. After completion of this training, he will receive 8 weeks of advanced basic training at Fort Devons, Massachusetts.

60 YEARS AGO

The Alexandria Senior Citizens 30-piece band will give a concert over KCMT-TV on Saturday, Nov. 21. The director will be Dr. Paul Hanson. Two men from Pope County are members, Julius Aslakson and Herman F. Engebretson. Up to a month ago Edward S. Olson was director of the band.

Mr. and Mrs. Olaf Haldorson of Starbuck observed their 61st wedding anniversary at their home, Nov. 7. They are both 82 years old. They have one son and four daughters: Edwin Haldorson, Anoka; Mrs. Walter Bagney and Mrs. Fritz Brown, Ortonville; Mrs. Norval Einarson, Milwaukee, Wisc.; and Mrs. Marion Ronnie, Glenwood.

Miss Linda Larson, daughter of. Mr. and. Mrs. Franklin Larson, became the bride of Burton Bardal, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Bardal at the Minnewaska Lutheran Church on Sept. 19, Rev. E.D. Lind officiating. Attending the bride as maid of honor was Marlys Aaberg. The bridesmaids were Sylvia Winge and Astrid Forde. Beth Ann Rutledge was the flower girl and Robert Rutledge was the ring-bearer. Paul Bardal was the best man, and the groomsmen were Eugene Bardal and Ronald Moen.

The operetta, “Annie Laurie” will be presented Nov. 24 by the Starbuck Senior High Chorus. Lead parts will be taken by Dale Pederson, Rosemary Barsness, Paul Olson, Mike Forde, Wayne Olson, Ted Amundson, Linda Sumption, Edna Stevens, Michael Johnson, Diane Barsness, David Johnshoy, Rhonda Beuckens, Kevin Sanvik, Carol Pederson, Don Carlson, Florene Pederson, The townspeople are Dave Samuelson, Darryl Larson, Linda Dahlseng, Kathy Teigen, Mary Boyd, Elaine Opdahl, Joan Baukol, Joyce Hustad, L. Jay Goodyear, Ken Nordaune, Paul Olson, Mike Forde and Wayne Olson.

From Nov. 21, 1974

The Buckettes (the Starbuck High School girls’ basketball team) were Region 6 champs, but Litchfield ousted them  38-37 in State Tournament play Tuesday.

Miss Anne Eichelberger became the bride of Mark Deaner at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck on Saturday, Sept. 7, 1974 at 3:30 p.m. Rev. Arvin Halvorson officiated at the double ring ceremony. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. James Eichelberger of Red Wing, MN and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Deaner of Starbuck. After a brief honeymoon, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Deaner are making their home at 3701 – 16th Ave. S.W. in Cedar Rapids, 1A. The couple are graduates of Starbuck High School. Mrs. Deaner is a graduate of the ND State School of Science and Mr. Deaner is a graduate of the Willmar Tech. Institute.

Rebecca Ann Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Anderson of rural Starbuck, is the second area girl to be chosen as a participant in the Minnesota Teenager Pageant to be held at the Holiday Inn in Rochester in April 1975. Winners in this contest will be eligible to participate in the National contest in Kansas City later in the summer. Rebecca is currently a student at Starbuck High school. She is a member of the 4-H (Secretary), Luther League, Church Choir, F.H.A. (Treas.), girls basketball, track, varsity cheerleader, school paper, band, class officer, National Honor Society and on the A and B honor rolls. Miss Anderson joins Patricia Dietzler as contestants in the contest.

An open house bridal shower in honor of Miss Rosann Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Anderson, will be held at the Fron Church parlors on Friday, Nov. 29 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Bring a favorite recipe.

From Nov. 21, 1984

Harold Hagen, a well-known area farmer and businessman was honored last week at the monthly meeting of the Starbuck Farmers Union Oil Company for 30 years of “dedicated service” to the business. During his 30-year tenure on the Board of Directors, Hagen has held various offices and headed many committees. At the special ceremonies held last Monday evening, Hagen was presented a plaque by Board Chairman David Danielson.

Before a large and enthusiastic crowd, the musicians of Starbuck High school displayed a wide and varied selection of music. The junior band led the program off with several selections. Next, the gathering was entertained by the wonderful sounds of the Jazz Ensemble, highlighted by a marvelous rendition of “The Curley Shuffle” with the trombone section (shown left singing the chorus, Next Director Shirley Hanson’s Buck ‘N Aires sang three selections including “Bill Bailey, Won’t You Come Home” The concert was concluded by the Starbuck high school Concert Band, who played four selections. The instrumental music department is under the direction of Mr. Charles “Kip” Johnson.

New officers for the 1985 year were elected at a recent meeting of the Starbuck Volunteer Fire Department The re-elected Chief of the department was Roger Larson. Steve Gorder was named First Assistant while Luverne Jorgenson received the nomination for Second Assistant. Jim Yeaman will serve as Secretary/Treasurer.

Phil Landgraf will retire from the ambulance crew on January 1 after eighteen years of dedicated service to the community. Landgraf was on the ‘charter’ team when the service was organized in 1967. His wife, Elva, who has been a member of the crew for six years, has also chosen to retire from the team in order to enjoy full retirement with her husband.

Starbuck Public School honored its professional and support staff during American Education Week last week. Each year members of the staff who have reached a yearly milestone of service to the local school is honored at a recognition luncheon. Making the special presentations, on behalf of the Starbuck Board of Education was Vice Chairman Dr. Sanford Wilson. The three members of the professional staff honored included Earl Stottler, 15 years; Bill Bailey, 15 years; and Roy Toivonen, 20 years. Members of the support staff honored wer Dorothy Sunde, 15 years; Evelyn Finstad, 15 years; Buss Benson, 10 years; and Fran Moen, 10 years. Honored, but not available when the picture was taken was Joe Hoium, 35 years.

Bruce and Brenda Gilbertson and Shawn are proud to announce the birth of their son and brother, Todd Ryan, born Sunday, November 4, 1984 at the Douglas County Hospital, Alexandria. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Burton Johnson of Starbuck and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gilbertson of Detroit Lakes. Great-grandmothers are Ada Johnson of Starbuck and Clara Johnson of Terrace.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bjokne of Lowry will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on Sunday, November 25th with an open house at the Ben Wade Church in Lowry. Everyone welcome.

30 YEARS AGO

From Nov. 23, 1994

At patron meetings held by Cyrus Farmers Elevator and Starbuck Creamery Company on November 9th and 10th, respectively, the members voted to approve consolidation of the two cooperatives. The newly consolidated cooperative will be called “Midwest Consolidated Cooperative.” The effective date of consolidation will be January 1st, 1995.”

Paced by the City of Lowry’s 81% eligible voter turnout, the voters of Pope County. Voters of Pope County who turned out to vote at a total 71% pace, concurred with the general signal that was sent across the nation to the nation’s politicians that it was time for a change and the American people are ted of the false promises and rhetoric they are handed once our elected officials take office. On the national scene, the Republican party regained control of both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, the first time that has happened since Dwight D. Eisenhower was president in the 1950s. Looking at the preliminary figures, it appears that the Republican party picked up 50 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and eight seats in the Senate to swing the balance of power.

In Minnesota, leading the IR party’s victory were Senator-elect Rod Grams and Governor Arne Carlson.

Fron Lutheran Church, Starbuck will be dedicating the new addition on Sunday, November 20, 1994. The Service of Dedication will be at 10:30 a.m. followed by a potluck meal. Pastor Don Oldenburg, former pastor, will be preaching. The public is warmly invited to attend the Open House that afternoon. The afternoon will include video showings of the construction, live piano music and, of course, refreshments.

A moving and somber ceremony was held last Friday as the new and beautiful Pope County Veterans Memorial was dedicated. The memorial is located on the Courthouse lawn.

Doug Larson was among the candidates for king for Fall Fest royalty at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC). Coronation ceremonies were held October 18 He is the son of Roger and Grace Larson of Starbuck and is enrolled in plant industries management at UMC.

Senior middle hitter Tennille Ring was the lone Minnewaska Laker named to the West Central Conference South All-Conference team, announced last week. Senior Heidi Mueller and junior Jill Blair received Honorable Mention honors. The Lakers finished the season with a 8-6 conference record and 12-9 overall record.

20 YEARS AGO

Lowry’s new postmaster, Dennis Jones, started the job October 2 but he’s not new to the area. Dennis has lived in Lowry for 23 years. He worked as Lowry’s postmaster in 1981 for one year and walked to work each day. He worked in the same position 23 years ago and when the job opened up once more, he decided it was time to walk to work again. But his postal service career started long before. In fact, he has worked at a total of nine post office over 32 years.

A new staff member has joined the Minnewaska Regional Health System (MRHS) medical care team. Beth Ankeny is a Nurse Practitioner specializing in Family Practice at the Minnewaska Medical Clinic and she started working at the end of September. This is Beth’s first job after recently earning her Master’s Degree at the University of North Dakota. She earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from North Dakota State University. And during her education, she worked at MeritCare in Fargo in the pediatric intensive care unit.

Mitch Johnsrud of Starbuck, who was featured in last week’s issue of the Times, presented an American flag to the Starbuck VFW Post Saturday evening. The flag was flown over Camp Monteith in Kosovo on July 22, 2004. The soldiers of A 2/136th Infantry dedicated the flag to the local post. Johnsrud presented the flag to Post Commander Roger Larson and then raised the flag just before sunset while family, friends and fellow veterans stood proudly at his side. Johnsrud returned from Kosovo in September. He’s a new VFW member and currently has one year of service remaining in the Army National Guard. 

Lucas Grant of West Union, formerly of Starbuck, was a member of the 2004 Augsburg College men’s soccer team. Grant, a goalkeeper, a 2001 graduate of Minne-waska Area High School, son of Dave and Deb Grant, had a 7-9-2 won-loss-tie record and 2.01 goals-against-average in 18 games during the 2004 season.

D&W Construction of Alexandria announced the promotion of Ron Disrud of Starbuck to the position of Project Manager. Disrud has been with D&W Construction for nine years as site supervisor and has a vast wealth of knowledge of the carpentry industry with a total of 35 years in the carpentry field.

 Disrud graduated from Starbuck High School and still resides in the area with his wife, Char.

Starbuck Police Chief Mitch Johnsrud swore in new full-time Police Officer Adam Rinn on at the Starbuck City Council meeting Thursday and presented him with his badge.

Pleasant Hill Troopers 4H Member John Nygaard and Club Leader Keith Nygaard gave a donation of $75 to Starbuck VFW Post 4582 on Wednesday, November 12. The donation was for the purpose of erecting a flag pole and light at Old Yankee Cemetery north of Starbuck. Commander Bob Friesen accepted the donation. Also pictured in the Times was Allan Nygaard.

The Glenwood Rotary Club continued its effort to provide “Warm Heads, Warm Hands and Warm Hearts” to local children by providing hundreds of hats and gloves to Glacial Hills Elementary School in Starbuck for the winter season. The local Rotary club has been providing the hats and gloves to the elementary school for a number of years and this year made the donation to Glacial Hills Elementary School. The Warm Hands, Warm Heads, Warm Hearts project was launched in 1993.
