Tribune has new publisher

Jan. 21, 1965 –The Glenwood High School production won first place in the district one-act play contest. Roger Bruhn was also named top actor; Janis Hustad was selected as best supporting actress. Others in the cast included Ruth Halverson, Ruth McIver, Gregg Cross, Lynn Rambeck, Lary Thorson and Norman Wegener. Directing the play was Lee Paulson. Alexandria took second place in the competition. Both schools would represent the district at the Region VI contest.

The second of three hearings on the petition of the Soo Line Railroad to discontinue passenger Trains Nos. 9 and 10 (the Winnepeger) was held in Glenwood.

Other hearings were to be held in Thief River Falls and St. Paul. Glenwood businessmen, public officials and railroad personnel were to testify.

Pope County was allotted $268,000 for highway funds with $97,724 for maintenance and $146,586 for construction; the municipal amount of $9,796 was for maintenance and $14,694 for construction. 

Jan. 16, 1975 – Glenwood area residents dug out from under what might have been the worst blizzard since the great Armistice Day storm of 1940. The storm dumped 16 inches of snow in the area which was blown around by winds gusting to 70 miles an hour. Twelve-foot high drifts were common.

The Pope County 4-H livestock judging team won first place in the national contest in Denver in spite of the weather and their missing one of the members of their team. Participating were Jim Bennett, Paul Freeman and Alan Bryce. Bennett was also the top-ranking individual at the show with 537 points out of a possible 600.

Jan. 17, 1985 –  Rural mail carrier Randy Smith was honored for going “above and beyond the call of duty.” Smith noticed that one of his elderly costumers had not picked up his mail and notified authorities who discovered that the man had fallen. He was taken to the Glacial Ridge Hospital where he was treated for malnutrition and then transferred to a nursing home.

The Tribune featured a story on Nora Rahn, longtime piano, voice and violin teacher in the area. Rahn taught her students theory and appreciation as well as harmony, ear training and history. She cited several of her students who had gone on to careers in music.

Twelve Glenwood musicians were chosen to participate in the Dist. No. 22 honor band. They were Mary McIver, flute; Stephanie Howe, clarinet; Lori Howe, alto sax; Michele Bishop, alto sax; Pam Engler, tenor sax; Mike Hegg, baritone sax; Cindy Van Batavia, oboe; Kim DeMorett , French horn; Pat Morris, trombone; and Lea Gilbertson, Bill Engebretson and Troy Salonen, percussion.

Jan. 16, 1995 – Roselyn and Herb Marquardt, of Glenwood, were featured in the Pope County Tribune for receiving awards for their good service as carriers of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. They had been carriers for the “other Tribune” for 10 years and didn’t plan on retiring anytime soon.

Six teams of 44 seventh through 12th-grade students had participated in the second annual Odyssey of the Mind tournament held at E.N. Nordgaard Elementary School. Each team had five to seven members. Four teams advanced to the regional tournament to be held in March in Moorhead.

“Shake the Winter Blues and Put on Your Dancing Shoes” was the theme of a family fun night at E.N. Nordgaard Elementary School to be held Jan. 30. A community supper was to be served and then followed by a community dance. All the proceeds were to go to the “Kid’s Kingdom,” the name selected for the new playground at ENN.

Jan. 10, 2005 – John R. and Mary Stone had sold their interest in the Pope County Tribune to Pope County Press, Inc., which will be headquartered in Glenwood. New publisher of the newspaper and president of Pope County Press was Tim Douglass, of Granite Falls.

The Minnesota State Patrol had found a vehicle that struck a pedestrian and killed him early Saturday morning on Highway 29 north of Glenwood. The vehicle and its driver had left the scene of the accident. Cory Allen Pierce, 22, of Alexandria “had left a party at a nearby cabin and was walking along the road,” said Pope County Sheriff Tom Larson.

Construction at the new Lakeside Ballroom site had been going according to plans, except for a small fire last Sunday morning. The Glenwood Fire Department responded to the call and found footing and foundation forms on fire. Firefighters removed a heater from the area and shut down a propane heater. They then removed the heat housing and some of the wood forms that were used for concrete pouring. After the fire was extinguished, the site was returned to Diversified Footings to reset the forms and the housing for concrete.

Jan. 12, 2015 – Starbuck will be well represented at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando on New Year’s Day. You won’t find the answer by checking the hometowns on the Minnesota or Missouri football rosters. Perhaps you know someone traveling to Florida for the game, seeking respite from winter’s early grasp. Byron Helgeson will be there because he is a member of Florida Citrus Sports and its bowl selection committee. Helgeson was a multi-sport athlete who graduated from Starbuck in 1956.

The day before winter break, Dec. 19, the MAHS Knowledge Bowl team headed to Moorhead to put their skills to the test at a 28-team tournament held at Concordia College. Minnewaska’s Knowledge Bowl team as a whole split into three smaller teams to compete at Concordia. Schools competing included Alexandria, Morris, Fargo South, Fargo North, West Fargo, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton and Fergus Falls. On the 2014-15 MAHS Knowledge Bowl team were seniors Will Anderson, Gavin Doebbert, Ian Gustafson, Gavin Jensen, Mike Maus and Joshua Thompson; juniors Abby Rupp and Mary Wuollet; sophomores Ashley Anderson, Chris Clausen, Hunter Dougherty, Alex Larson, Lance Miller, Natasha Nemmers, Jake Peters, Colin Richards, Greta Serrin, Shawn Stumpf, Hannah Trainor, Joshua Troen and Seth Trussell; and freshmen Julia Hoffmann, Samantha Pfeiffer, Madelyn Reichmann and Tanner Schaefer.

Six MAS students were selected as school winners of the Patriot’s Pen essay contest, sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The selected students were Isabella Ortendahl, Cole Harste and Ali Femrite, Annika Stensrud, Avery Jorgenson and Henry Hauser. Sixth-grader Isabella Ortendahl then placed third in the district. The theme was “Why do you appreciated American’s veterans?”
