Publisher’s Perspective

Christmas activities in the area continue this week with residential lighting contests in Starbuck and in Glenwood.

Starbuck businesses and residents are invited to light up their structures and yards for the Starbuck Holiday Light Contest. No registration is necessary, however, those who would like to ensure their displays are included in the contest may leave a message with the address at the Chamber office, 320-239-4220. Judges will tour the city on December 15.

In Glenwood the lighting contest is part of the Magical Christmas in Glenwood activities sponsored by the Glenwood Lakes Area Welcome Center and Chamber.  Judging will take place from Dec. 12-14 and winners will be announced on Dec. 15.  Register online at www.welcomeglenwood.org.

The Magical Christmas activities continue in Glenwood this week with an open house and family night at the Glenwood Lakes Area Welcome Center and Chamber.  The evening includes pictures with Santa Claus, horse and wagon rides and other activities.

Then, on Thursday, Dec. 15, the Canadian Pacific Rail’s “Lighted Holiday Train” rolls through town at 10 a.m.  Performing at the train’s stop in Glenwood will be Alan Doyle and Kelly Prescott.

Later that day will be the Living Nativity scene located by the Welcome Center and Chamber office on 1st Street.  The scene will feature live actors, camels, donkeys and other farm animals.  The scene will be set up from 4 to 7 p.m. and is always a popular activity.

These activities don’t just happen and we thank all chamber personnel, boards and volunteers for planning and carrying out these community activities.

The Starbuck Chamber of Commerce hosted its lighted parade to kick off the Christmas season for the entire area on Nov. 26.  The Miss Minnewaska royalty (pictured below) won first prize for their float, featuring lights of all colors and a large, well-lit Christmas tree. The Glenwood royalty nabbed second place with their float in the traditional red, white and blue they are known for. The third-place prize went to No Place Like Home for their creative car lighting.
