Time to put down our weapons…
From Phil Stumpf
Glenwood
By the time many of us read this letter, the 47th president will have been sworn in.
All the major media outlets will have covered the ceremony. Another topic the networks have been covering for the past couple of years are the ongoing wars, country against country, region against region.
I’ll be the first to admit, I have not taken the time to educate myself to have a better understanding why these conflicts continue. I don’t enjoy reading about it. All I know is thousands and thousands of lives have been lost.
I enjoy picking up the Pope County Tribune on Monday afternoons. Catching up on local happenings, articles of interest and keeping up on our local sports teams is enjoyable to me.
What I don’t enjoy reading is the ongoing war of words in the editorial section, using the pen as the weapon and the paper as the battle ground. The sarcasm, ridicule and disrespect for others has gone way too far.
Please don’t think for a minute, I’m suggesting we are not granted the right to express how we feel. This is the furthest from the truth. However, after last week’s letters, I felt something needed to be said.
Isn’t it perhaps time we put down our weapons (pen and keyboard?) This is directed to ALL parties, not just the two individuals from last week’s edition.
It’s been well documented from past editorials on how each of us feels about the outcome from the recent election.
Moving forward can we all try to be a bit more “ Christlike”. Let’s begin by finding the good in each other. Let’s lift each other up, not tear each other down.
The time we spend drafting up “I’m right, you’re wrong” editorials, would be much better spent on our knees in prayer. Prayers of hope and for a better understanding of those whom we disagree with. And if we can do that…
Oh, What a wonderful world this would be.
