Writer reiterates content of first letter

From Steve Nestor,

A few weeks ago I wrote a letter to the editor in reaction to a column that was written in August of 2021. That column, found on the Opinion Page, was not only light on facts and or historic reality, I felt it necessary to not only question it, but to point out a specific falsehood and total misrepresentation.

Years ago there was an old saying, “it must be true, I read it in the newspaper.” Later it was said of the radio as well. Yes, Edward R. Murrow and Walt Winchell were to be trusted. Then came television, Cronkite, Huntley/ Brinkley and the same was said.

So when I read the weekly column written by our former mayor, former President of the Chamber of Commerce, former Rotarian, West Central Initiative Representative, former owner and editor of this paper, I felt it necessary to respond. Most folks would trust this column’s author and or assume without much thought that what was written and reported was true, researched and based on fact. This was not the case.

Opinion fine, but not a column that reported misinformation and lacked any follow up and or retraction.

And when the former  Pope County Coordinator and the present editor/owner questioned my letter and its content, I felt I should respond. No, not to start some sort of “pissin’ match.”  The facts are just that. I was more than concerned that the former Administrator and his wife found my letter boring. Fact is, 5 people did not die from the Jan. 6th Capitol demonstrations and nor were two of those policeman, as was stated in the column. There was one death, and that was cold blooded murder when a Federal Agent shot an unarmed female demonstrator through a glass door. And the shooters identity and position was kept from the public for several weeks. And he has yet to be charged with anything. (Ask Alec Baldwin how he feels about this.)

So this was boring?

Oh yes a hearing was held for weeks after weeks…. hardly bipartisan as the column writer said should happen. Week after week for over a year, partisan banter and inaccurate one sided testimony with little or no conclusion followed. The two Republican reps on the panel, hand picked by the controlling party and not the ones selected by the other side of the aisle, only added to the charade that was supposed to get to the bottom of the overall background to the event. (Oh, by the way both were not elected this past midterm) who called off the security? would not call up the guard? who ignored the Dept of Justices and FBIs warnings that groups were planning to engage and cause the damages and break ins that occurred.? and by the way this info did not come from A Tucker Carlson script !

Yes, weeks upon weeks of partisan political name calling went on. Yes there was one death. But over a million U.S. citizens died from COVID-19 and the same controlling party has never had a hearing on that!  Perhaps that would be boring too.

Writer comments on recent letters…

Just a comment on the recent letters concerning the January 6, 2020 incident at the U.S. Capitol.  The excellent letter on Jan. 16 provided truth–researched facts correcting inaccuracies from the past.  Then in the January 23 paper, the previous writer states that he and his wife found this  letter “boring.”  It is really sad when “truth” is boring.
