Former residents saddened by hometown’s appearance
From Cori (Pederson) Mulcahy,
Summerfield, Fla.
My family recently had a reunion at the Depot is Starbuck. It has become an annual event that I look forward to. We arrived in Starbuck from Benson and the beautiful view of the lake coming into Starbuck has not changed. The corridor of the lake, the Dairy Queen, the Fire Station, the Depot, on through town to Minnewaska Home and the Lakes Area Inn, where we spent the night (It is newly remodeled, clean and pleasant.) certainly makes Starbuck seem like the charming small town I always knew. I didn’t realize that if we went one block in any direction that we would see so much blight.
Starbuck people used to have a lot of pride. Everyone’s house and property were well cared for. Most had flowers and gardens growing profusely. There was no debris laying in front of garages or cars that obviously do not run parked at the homes. Lawns were mowed, weeds were destroyed, buildings were painted. What we saw now was blight. Block after block of stuff stacked up. Blight breeds blight, litter breeds litter. It shows in my hometown.
There are long-time residents of Starbuck who are saddened by the appearance of the town. It appears the sense of pride is waning. You have a lot to offer Starbuck. Please work at keeping it the pleasant community it has always been.
