The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program is celebrating its 50th anniversary nationwide, marking five decades of steadfast dedication to improving public health and ensuring that mothers and young children have access to proper nutrition. Horizon Public Health oversees the WIC program in the five counties of Douglas, Pope, Stevens, Traverse and Grant.

WIC has been a lifeline for many families, offering vital nutrition education, healthy food options, and healthcare access. This milestone anniversary reflects the program’s ongoing commitment to building healthier communities and equipping families with the resources they need for a better future.

Throughout its history, WIC has continuously evolved to meet the changing needs of its participants. By adopting evidence-based practices and collaborating with healthcare providers, community groups, and public health agencies, WIC has not only addressed nutritional deficiencies but has also played a crucial role in preventing chronic diseases and supporting early childhood development.

The program’s wide range of services includes nutrition education, healthy food benefits, breastfeeding assistance, and referrals to healthcare providers. By taking a holistic approach to health and nutrition, WIC has become a cornerstone of public health efforts across the country.

As we reflect on 50 years of success, Horizon Public Health remains committed to the core principles of the WIC program and looks forward to continuing to serve and support families in the years to come.
