With longer days and rising temperatures, your houseplants are waking up from their winter rest. Spring is the perfect time to refresh their care routine. Follow these simple tips to keep your indoor plants healthy and thriving.
1. Adjust Watering
Winter dormancy meant less water, but now your plants need more as they start actively growing. Gradually increase watering but avoid overdoing it—soggy roots lead to rot! A simple test: stick your finger an inch into the soil. If it’s dry, it’s time to water.
2. Maximize Light Exposure
Longer daylight hours mean more sun for your plants. Move them closer to windows but watch for leaf scorch. If you see brown or crispy edges, shift them to indirect light.
3. Start Fertilizing
Spring is feeding time! Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once a month or try a slow-release option. Over-fertilizing can do more harm than good, so follow label instructions carefully.
4. Repot If Needed
If your plant’s roots are poking through drainage holes or it’s top-heavy, it’s time for a bigger home. Choose a pot one size larger, refresh the soil, and gently repot. Water thoroughly after transplanting.
5. Prune and Clean
Trim dead or yellowing leaves and overgrown stems to encourage fresh growth. Dusty leaves block sunlight, so wipe them with a damp cloth or rinse them off with a gentle shower.
6. Watch for Pests
Warmer weather brings pests like aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs. Check for tiny insects, sticky residue, or webbing. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil and isolate affected plants to prevent spreading.
7. Maintain Humidity
Spring air can be dry, which isn’t ideal for many houseplants. Boost humidity with a tray of water and pebbles, a humidifier, or occasional misting.
With a little extra care, your houseplants will reward you with lush, vibrant growth. For more houseplant tips, visit: https://extension.umn.edu/find-plants/houseplants.
