More than thirty Pope County graduates and former students attended the second annual reunion of the Park Region Luther College Association held at Fergus Falls.

Miss Borghild Horjem sailed from Montreal June 10 on the SSR Regina for a three month visit in Norway with her grandparents.

The following families enjoyed a picnic near Glenwood Sunday, John H. Nelson, Nels Bagne, P.E. Olmeim, Thom Dahl and Ole Jellum.

From June 16, 1932

An 11-year-old boy lost his life by drowning after diving from a large raft.

At the Starbuck Band Concert at the Lakeshore Park held Monday evening, June 20th, conducted by M. Casper Johnshoy, a bass saxophone solo was given by John Larson.

80 YEARS AGO

From June 18, 1942

Work was progressing rapidly on the Oscar Runquist and Alfred Aslakson barns which blew down this spring. Emery Barsness was also building a barn.

Thomas Olson left for Washington D.C. where he was called to report. Olson enlisted in teh Navy shortly before school closed for the spring and since that time had been visiting at his home here.

The grand opening of the Hilden Hardware and Appliance Store will be held this Saturday at the former Johnson Hardware and Gift Shop.

Beverly Olson and Stanley Sweet had been chosen as “Girl and Boy Stater” for 1952 at Starbuck High School.

Miss Sylvia Maanum would graduate from the College of Medical Technology in Minneapolis.

The new royalty for the Sons of Norway for the coming year were: princesses Becky Stoen of Starbuck and Pam Mathiason of Morris, and queen Karen Erickson of Starbuck.

60 YEARS AGO

From June 14, 1962

David Engh, Larry Kirkwold and Raymond Stedje, all of Starbuck, were among the candidates receiving degrees at the University of Minnesota June 9.

The Starbuck Boy Scout Explorer Post 491 elected the following officers: president, James Walline; vice president, Norman Norland Jr.; secretary, Richard Carlson; treasurer, Ken Gunderson; quartermaster, John Samuelson; and cabinet representative, Bill Pederson.

The first class of Highway Patrol officer candidates trained in the new Highway Department Civil Defense Center at Arden Hills was graduated. Conrad O. Urke was one of the graduates.

Audrey Gilbertson, who would be a senior at ST. Cloud State College, left from New York for her trip to Nigeria, Africa, where she was sent under the Span scholarship program.

50 YEARS AGO

From June 15, 1972

Five county 4-Hers from Pope County would  represent the county at the 4-H Junior Leader Conference to be held in St. Paul Campus, U of M, June 19-23. They were Susan Svenning, Glenwood; Kathy Bryce, Glenwood; Mary Thompson, Starbuck; Laurie Amundson, Starbuck and Vicky Larson, Cyrus.

Howard A. Teigen, a member of the West Central Life Underwriter’s Association, was elected for the second time to serve as president of the association. He first served as secretary and treasurer several years ago, then vice president and president.

Archie Anderson, Glenwood, Mrs. Wallace Molander, Lowry, and Mrs. Jacob Gorder, Starbuck, had been appointed by the Pope County Social Services Dept. to represent the county on an advisory committee for mental health, mental retardation and chemical dependency.

A Montevideo youth, Bob Henstein, must really think a lot of his girlfriend as he and a companion, Roger Stai, biked all the way from Montevideo to Bemidji just to see her. They left on Friday, June 2, traveled 120 miles the first day making it to Wadena in 12 hours. Being a bit tired they only made 13 miles on Saturday while on Sunday they wheeled on into Bemidji, a total of 220 miles from Montevideo.

From June 16, 1982

Robert Hagert would participate in the 13th Annual Mr. Minnesota Teen Program to be held in Morris June 17-19.

Seniors Bill Rutledge and Greg Toivonen and junior Kent Amundson were elected to the 1982 All-Conference basketball team. Coach Greg Starns had been named Coach of the Year.

Jane Olson would receive the Scholarship Award at Willmar Area Vocational Technical Institute for the fall quarter 1982. Jane would apply the $200 scholarship towards the legal secretary course.

Neil Olson received his doctorate degree in Physiology at Michigan State University June 12.

30 YEARS AGO

From June 17, 1992

The Minnewaska Area High School Swing Choir performed at the start of the Minnesota Twins vs. Chicago White Sox baseball game at the H.H.H. Metrodome under the direction of Gordy Moeller. They sang the National Anthem.

More than 100 Starbuck, Cyrus and Lowry Little Leaguers, coaches and parents and chaperones were at the Twins vs. White Sox baseball game, compliments of the Starbuck Jaycees.

Mike Opdahl of Starbuck and David Pederson of Lowry had been named to the dean’s list for the spring quarter at North Dakota State University.

Karla Froland of Starbuck had been selected to receive a $750 Mankato State University President’s Honor Scholarship for the 1992-93 academic year.

20 YEARS AGO

From June 19, 2002

Starbuck Heritage Days would include a special “Heart of a Friend” outdoor dessert-concert featuring Chris Atkins and his band along with other special guest artists. Free root beer floats would be served after the event.

Tim Beasley, a starting pitcher for the Lakers baseball team in 2002, and Corey Weber, the MAHS football team’s Most Valuable Player, were both selected to represent the Lakers and their region in annual prep all-star games later in June.

Stacy Tvrdik, one of nine infielders selected to the Class AA All-State Team by the State Softball Coaches Association. Tvrdik was a mainstay at shortstop for the Lakers during the past two seasons.

The issue of blight was discussed at the Starbuck City Council meeting on June 11. Starbuck Police Chief Jim Minion said he found 130-some blight cases during blight inspections. Another issue was of campers parked on city streets, boulevards, city right-of-ways and campers fifth wheels, which is in violation of the blight and property maintenance ordinance. The council suggested the ordinance be published in the paper and to have a public hearing about it. The council also asked that a letter go out with the water bill.

The Minnewaska girls brought home more hardware for the trophy case after their second place finish at the state golf tournament, making it seven consecutive years bringing home the trophy.
