From June 7, 1912

Mr. Spotts, who owned the boat landing near Pleasant Point, had installed a 10–horse motor boat. It was a fast boat.

Fishing would be abandoned for a few days until the finny fellows get through eating all the lake flies.

While Mr. Gorder was in the act of cranking up his auto, the machine started from the corner of the Farmer’s Store, ran along the railroad track, hit a rail and swerved to the left landing on a pile of tiling unloaded from the car. It was a lucky coincidence that the car turned just at the right place and hit the tiling at a proper angle, stopping it before any damage was done.

100 YEARS AGO

From June 9, 1922

The high school commencement exercises were held at the town hall when a class of nine young ladies received their diplomas from the Hon. Carl. N. Nelson, president of the board of education. Miss Helen Kyvig was the valedictorian of the class and Miss Dorothy Drackley was salutatorian. The other members of the class were: Ingeborg Bolstad, Agnes Brenden, Hazel Dahlquist, Hulda Hagen, Bernice Jorgenson, Grace Kirkwold, Bertha Lien, Cora Rasmussen, Margaret Torgerson and Alma Tollefson.

Elmer Wesen sold out his restaurant business to Ed Bingham. Mr. Wesen recently traded off his home and livery barns to Anton Dullum for his farm and now expected to devote his time to farming. He took in Mr. Bingham’s team, harness and cow on the restaurant deal.

Martin Dyrstad and Sigvart Aal had completed the commercial course at Park Region Luther College at Fergus Falls. Graduation exercises were held last week.

90 YEARS AGO

From June 9, 1932

A class of 32 seniors received their diplomas at the graduation exercises at the school auditorium. Miss Alma Gorder gave the salutatory and Calvin Pederson the valedictory.

Thirteen graduated at Cyrus high school including: George Tollefson, Bernice Thompson, Supt. T.D. Tveten, Walter Heland, Jeanette Koch, Vernal Hadler, Ivadel Braaten, Eve Sylvester, Jeanette Olson, Eleanor Larson, Marion Ronnie, Alice Tinseth, Mildred Tangen and Barbara Quammen.

The local American Legion Auxiliary Chorus composed of Mrs. A.L. Arneson, Mrs. A.T. Sanvik, Mrs. Victor Larson, Margaret Larson, Mrs. W.J. Peterson, Mrs. H.R. Peterson, Mrs. A.P. Nordy, Miss Magna Peterson, Mrs. Tom Thompson and Mrs. Helen Romstad won third place at the district contest at Granite Falls.

80 YEARS AGO

From June 11, 1942

Jimmy Totushek, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Totushek, was home for a week before leaving for Pearl Harbor, where he would be employed in the Navy Ship Yards.

Last week, Odin S. Barsness brought to the South St. Paul market two cows that weighed 2,670 pounds and brought $280.35 on the market.

Corp. Orlando B. Dahlseng, who was stationed at Fort Lawton, Seattle, Wash., was home on a 15-day furlough.

The pupils of Betty Mae Forde gave a recital at the high school. Those taking part were Carol Tessem, Audrey Hagen, Gloria Hagen, Phyllis Lorvig, Joyce Walters, Marilyn Peterson, Ann Opheim, Donna Mae Johnson, Norma Engen, Ann Teigen and Doris Otteson.

The Rev. Oliver Pederson would be installed June 1 as pastor of the Barsness and Chippewa Falls Lutheran Churches.

College news – Ronald T. Lee, a music major, and Kenneth Knutson, a classical language major, of Starbuck, graduated June 3 from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa; Truman Jackson, Norman Opheim and Joleen Kjera, all of Starbuck, graduated from Mankato State College June 7; Sylvia Peterson of Starbuck, graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead May 28 with a double major in Sociology and Psychology; Vail Peterson and Janyce Helgeson graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College June 3.

Patricia Thompson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd A. Thompson of rural Starbuck was chosen as one of the seven princesses who are attendants to the queen of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. on Tuesday, May 22.

White Bear Lake 4-H Club won top honors at Saturday’s Field Day.

After 10 years and 20 months of duty at the Minnewaska Home, Olive Dahlquist retired. She was honored by a farewell party at the Home by her fellow coworkers.

Five students from Starbuck graduated at Concordia College. They were: Sarah Aune, Gary Bredeson, Don Carlson, Judy Walline, Oronah Forbord.

40 YEARS AGO

From June 9, 1982

Mariam Forbord, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Myron Forbord was crowned 1982 Pope County Dairy Princess.

Dan Kvitek was named manager of the Lowry GTA recently. Before receiving this appointment, Kvitek was manager of the Alberta GTA.

The Golden Butter Knife award was presented to Mayme’s Cafe of Starbuck at a luncheon for dairy farm wives which was held at the Minnewaska House. Maymbe Sabolik was shown receiving the beautiful plaque from Gene Watnaas, northwest ADA representative. The award was given to food establishments who serve and promote dairy products.

The commissioners’ room in the Pope County Courthouse was once again filled with concerned farmers from Westport township. The visitors were present to address flooding problems.

Recipients of the Gladys Brang award for a creative writing selection addressing the topic of Starbuck history were Aimee Berg, 2nd place; Gary Blok, 3rd place and Julie Thompson, 1st place.

Named to the President’s Achievement List for the spring quarter were Dean Boysen, Michael Lewa, Eric Doty and Toni Solvie.

Nostalgia and entertainment were on the program for the June 13th Ann Bickle Heritage House Heritage Ball celebration where friends and neighbors would gather to honor Dr. Sanford(Sandy) and Jean Wilson of Starbuck and Lee Paulson of Glenwood.

The members of the Section 6A champion Minnewaska Area High School Laker baseball team received their blue ribbons from Section 6A officials, Mike Martin and Dave Schoeck, during the awards ceremonies following the Lakers 9-5 win over the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters at Morris.

Seth Burgess, a freshman on the MAHS golf team, would play in the state meet at Onamia this week.

Joel Sutton, son of Chris and Annie Sutton of Starbuck, was named the 2002 salutatorian. He was one of 141 students to receive diplomas at MAHS.

Judge Jon Stafsholt of Elbow Lake was awarded an Access to Justice Award by Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota for his work in expanding justice for low-income Minnesotans.

The Starbuck city council approved a motion to lower the rates for electrical hook-up at Hobo Park.

The storm drain in Lowry seemed to be leaking and had caused a sinkhole in a resident’s yard. City Clerk Lucy Olson said the city would use a camera to figure out what the issue was and decide what to do next.

Baseball team awards went to Riley Thompson, Austin Ostrander, Blake Johnsrud, Jake Amundson, Austin Giese and Sawyer Steidler-Thompson. All Conference award winners were Jake Amundson, Austin Giese and Blake Johnsrud.
