After having both of its meets postponed from the previous week, the Minnewaska Area wrestling team finally got in a few matches last week at the YME triangular last Tuesday.

The Lakers beat Quad County in one match, 51-28, but fell to Adrian-Ellsworth in the other, 48-27.

“We wrestled a couple of great matches last night,” coach Chip Rankin said.  “Against Adrian-Ellsworth we ran into a team led by six seniors that was simply better than us. Quad County had one loss on the season and we were able to get some big pins to pull out the win.

“We wrestled really tough with Miles Wildman, Chase Smith, Nick Ankeny, Mason Schiffler, Jayce Kovarik, Nate Dell and Myles Reichmann going undefeated on the night. A great way to close out the first half of the season.”

Minnewaska Area, which is 2-2 overall, was also set to host a home triangular, Thursday, but that meet was postponed to a later date due to weather.

Following some time off for the holidays, the Lakers are set to get back in action, Thursday, Jan. 5 at the Redwood Valley triangular.

Miles Wildman (106 pounds), Chase Smith (126), Nick Ankeny (138), Mason Schiffler (145), Jayce Kovarik (152) and Myles Reichmann (170) all went 2-0 at the YME triangular last Tuesday as the Lakers split a pair of matches.

During a 51-28 win over Quad County, Wildman (23-6 technical fall) and Chase Smith (win by forfeit) kept the Lakers close at 16-11 before seven-straight wins sealed the win for Minnewaska Area.

Ankeny (10-1 major) started the winning spree and was followed by Schiffler (forfeit win), Kovarik (pin in 30 seconds), Nathan Dell (pin in 3:28), Reichmann (pin in 2:19), Xander Johnson (fall in 3:37) and Chase Boelke (pin in 3:31), giving the Lakers an insurmountable 51-16 lead.

“Myles Reichmann was able to turn his kid and pin him,” coach Rankin said.  “Not to be outdone, Xander Johnson went out and pinned a ranked and undefeated senior from Quad County with a huge pin followed up by another pin at 195 by Chase Boelke to seal the dual.”

•  Wildman also won the first match against Adrian with a 20-7 major decision.  However, Adrian had forfeit wins at 113 and 120 pounds and also earned a pin at 132 pounds.

Smith did win by a 15-0 technical fall to keep the Lakers close at 18-9 after five matches.

Ankeny (pin in 10 seconds), Schiffler (fall in 42 seconds) and Kovarik (3-1 decision) won three-straight matches to give Minnewaska a 24-18 lead.

A 4-3 decision by Reichmann at 170 pounds kept the Lakers ahead at 27-24, but Adrian won the final four matches to go on to the 48-27 victory.
