The Minnewaska track and field teams had a great week at the Barnesville Meet last Tuesday and at the Sauk Centre Invitational, Thursday.

The Laker girls won both meets, edging Barnesville and NLS, respectively, while the boys team was second in both meets.  Minnewaska athletes won a total of nine events at Barnesville and eight at Sauk Centre.

This week, Minnewaska Area has two more meets beginning with the second Waska Invitational, Tuesday (tomorrow) and continuing with the NLS Invitational, Thursday, May 2.

Barnesville Meet

The Minnewaska Area track teams competed at the Barnesville Meet last Tuesday night, winning a combined nine events.

The Lakers girls placed first, edging Barnesville for the team title (125.5-121 points) with Park Christian earning third, while the Minnewaska Area boys were second with 110.5 points, placing far behind a very strong DGF team, which won the title with 212.5 points and winning eight events.

Winning titles for the girls team were Lauryn Ankeny in the 300 meter hurdles (47.9), Dacia Fleury in the 100 (13.3), Jillian Deutsch in the 3200 meter run (12:56.2), Jayda Kolstoe in the shot put (38-10 1/2) and the 3200 meter relay team of Ella Larson, Alia Randt, Ankeny and Olivia Danielson (10:14.8).

Fleury was also fifth in the 200 (28.6) and third in the triple jump (32-4), while Aubrey Polzin added a fourth in the 400 (1:06.3), Danielson was fourth in the 800 (2:31.4) and fifth in the discus (91-0), Maia Larson earned third (5:56.9) and Sydney Ankeny was fifth (6:11.6) in the 1600 meter run, Piper Citrowske-Lee was third in the 3200 (13:09), the 1600 meter relay team of Ella Larson, Randt, Danielson and Lauryn Ankeny earned fifth (4:23.6), Ankeny was also fifth in the triple jump (31-1 1/2) and Phemie Oeltjen earned fifth in the pole vault (7-6).

•  Leading the way for the boys team were Maeson Tank and Owen Meulebroeck.  Tank won the 400 (51.6) and 800 meter (2:03.5) races, while Meulebroeck was first in the 300 hurdles (40.9) and Ian Mills added another title with a first in the 3200 meter run (10:59.5).

Other top-five finishes for the Lakers included a fourth by Meulebroeck (16.4) and fifth by Hunter Stadsvold (17.3) in the 110 meter hurdles, a fifth by Stadsvold in the 300 hurdles (45.7), a fourth by Meulebroeck in the triple jump (37-10), a fourth by Carter Meyer in the 200 meter dash (23.9) along with a fifth in the 100 (11.8), a fourth by Zach Palmer in the 1600 meter run (5:10.2), a second by Kenneth Czech in the discus (119-8 1/4), a fourth by Jayce Kovarik in the pole vault (10-6), a fifth by Kaiden Harvey in the triple jump (37-8 1/4) and two seconds by the 1600 and 3200 meter relay teams.

Running on the 1600 meter relay, which lost by six-tenths of a second, were Meyer, Kovarik, Meulebroeck and Tank (3:36), while running on the runner-up 3200 meter relay were Carter Dinsmore, Mills, Palmer and Kovarik (9:01.7).

“There were lots of personal bests and season-best marks and times today,” boys coach Zach Traphagen said.  “With 13 teams competing at the meet, including a lot of teams we haven’t competed against yet, it made for some great competition.  It’s meets like these that make us better for the bigger meets in May that we have coming up.”

Three teams dominated the meet as DGF had eight titles, Minnewaska had four and third-place United Clay Becker had five championships.

Sauk Centre Invite

The Lakers had another great day at the Sauk Centre Invitational, Thursday, winning the girls meet by nine points over runner-up NLS and placing second to Sauk Centre in the 8-team boys’ field.

Dacia Fleury, Olivia Danielson, Jayda Kolstoe and the 1600 meter relay team had titles for the girls team.  Fleury won the 200 meter dash (27.35) and was also third in the triple jump (33-8 3/4) and fourth in the 100 (13.22), while Kolstoe won the shot put (38-1/2) and was also second in the discus (107-6) and Danielson won the 1600 meter run (5:43.82) and was also second in the 800 (2:34.08) and first with the 1600 meter relay team of Ella Larson, Aubrey Polzin and Lauryn Ankeny (4:24.56).

Ankeny added a second in the 300 hurdles (48.7) and fourth in the 200 meter dash (28.19), while Polzin was also fifth in the 400 (1:08.28), Ella Larson was third in the 800 (2:38.36) and fourth in the 1600 (5:51.22) and Jillian Deutsch (third, 13:05.38), Sydney Ankeny (fourth, 13:09.23) and Piper Citrowske-Lee (fifth, 13:37.52) led a strong finish in the 3200 meter run.

The Lakers also earned a second by the 800 meter relay team of Alia Randt, Brooklyn Meyer, Mya VanLuik and Polzin (1:59.13) and a second by the 3200 meter relay team of Randt, Citrowske-Lee, Deutsch and Maia Larson (11:08.06), while VanLuik was also third in the discus (91-9),  Melena Longtin was fourth in the discus (91-3 3/4), Phemie Oeltjen was fourth in the high jump (4-8) and fifth in the pole vault (7-6) and Randt added a fifth in the triple jump (31-3 1/2).

•  In the boys competition, Owen Meulebroeck had two hurdling firsts, Maeson Tank won the 400 meter dash (2:02.39) and the 400 meter relay team of Jeythan Quirindongo, Meulebroeck, Kaiden  Harvey and Carter Meyer claimed a fourth title with a time of 44.91.

Meulebroeck won the 300 hurdles in 41.03 and the 110 meter hurdles in 16.55, while teammate Hunter Stadsvold was second in the 300s (45.53) and second in the 110 highs (16.9).

Quirindongo added a second in the 100 meter dash (11.57) and third in the 200 (23.83), while Meyer was also second in the 200 (23.56) and tied for second in the 100 (11.57).

Zach Palmer earned a third in the 1600 meter run (5:07.87) and was also second in the 3200 (11:07.81) with Ian Mills placing fourth (11:18.22).

Besides the winning 400 meter relay, the Lakers’ other three relays teams all placed third.  

The 800 meter relay team of Josh Hippe, Kolton Rogers, Caden Christensen and Harvey was third in 1:39.53, while the 1600 relay team of Carter Dinsmore, Jacob Mrnak, Stadsvold and Jayce Kovarik was third in 3:56.08 and the 3200 meter relay team of Dinsmore, Mills, Kovarik and Tank was third with a time of 9:01.15.

In the field events, Kenneth Czech had a fourth in the discus (120-7), Harvey was second in the high jump (5-6) and fifth in the triple jump (38-5 1/2), and Kovarik added a second in the pole vault (10-6).
