Marthalers to expand

Feb. 7, 1963 Glenwood High School’s one-act play cast was set to enter competition on the district level. Involved in the cast were David Wedum, Marlys DeBoer, Jack Achter, Steve Kettells and Curt Anderson. Directing was Maureen Costello assisted by Eileen Schroeder, William Schroeder and Jeanne Sonenstahl.

An elderly Gilchrist Township man was found dead near his home. He had apparently fallen in the snow. 

A young Glenwood woman was selected to participate in the International Farm Youth Exchange from Minnesota. Elsie Clasen was anticipating a visit to Korea.

A bill which would establish Glacial Lakes State Park was introduced in the Minnesota Senate by Sen. Cliff Lofgren. E. E. Barsness, of Glenwood, had been developing options on the land and working on the project since 1960 or earlier. 

Feb. 8, 1973 – The Glenwood Lakers debate team was named runner-up in region competition. Pictured in the Tribune were Paul Bennett, Bob Schluter, Dave Serrin and Jim Bennett, coached by Eileen Haima. 

Showing at the Glenwood Theatre was Ryan’s Daughter, starring Robert Mitchum, John Mills, Trevor Howard and Sarah Miles. The Minnewaska Showstoppers were in rehearsal for their production of John Brown’s Body. 

Over 4,000 fisherman and women participated in the 100th annual Scout Fishing Derby. Glenwood winners included Corey Haugen and Karla Mjoness. Co-chairs were Vic Johnson, Bob O’Fallen and Edith Graves. Several Scout units spent the night camped on the lake. 

Feb. 10, 1983 – The Pope County Board of Commissioners delayed taking any action regarding the possible impact drilling for oil in the area might have. Meanwhile a story in the Minneapolis Tribune questioned the ethics of driller of some of the wells in the Brooten area. 

Starbuck area farmer, Jim Langman, was elected president of Minnesota’s arm of the American Agriculture movement. 

Over 100 people were taking the training to be volunteers for Hospice, a program supporting terminal patients and their families. 

Glenwood’s new radio station was ready to begin broadcasting. About to go on the air were Dominic Castino, a Minneapolis actor who was moving to Glenwood. 

Feb. 8, 1993 – Healthcare issues in Pope County were discussed at a forum held at the Minnewaska Area High School. Nearly 75 county residents discussed ways to approach the crisis as a community. The crisises were a doctor shortage, declining population, inadequate insurance coverage, rising medical costs and hospitals in financial crisis. 

Making it official, Minnewaska senior, Ryan Shae, signed a national letter of intent to play football for the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. The 18-year-old son of Mike and Joyce Shae, of Glenwood, had announced earlier that winter that he would be accepting the full-ride scholarship offer from the Western Athletic Conference school to play at the Division 1 level. 

It was going to cost the city of glenwood over $92,000 to repair its $500,000-gallon water reservoir. The interior of the storage tank had begun to crack. The contractor would resurface the interior walls, add a required second door and paint the exterior, which would also include the city logo. 

Feb. 10, 2003 – Country music legend Jerry Reed will be in concert March 18 at Central Square in Glenwood starting at 8 p.m. Reed is the creator of 263 songs including hits When You’re Hot, You’re Hot, Amos Moses, I Got the Shaft, Lord, Mr. For and Eastbound and Down. 

As one of country music’s top entertainers, Reed has appeared in dozens of movies and TV show including Smokey and the Bandit series and The Waterboy.

Feb. 11, 2013 – From racing the course with a homemade outhouse on skis in the first annual “Butt Hutt Boogie” to taking the Polar Plunge into the icy waters of Lake Minnewaska, the 2013 Winterama celebration, held Feb. 9, had people on their feet and enjoying the Minnesota winter. The day also featured free kids’ games on the ice, a community cross county ski event and the annual Chili Cook-off and Wii dance party at Lakeside to warm things up. Events on Lake Minnewaska came to a close with a fantastic fireworks display. 

Aaron Marthaler, owner of Marthaler Chevrolet in Glenwood, recently purchased Kruse Motors and K&S Motors of Worthington. Marthaler, who recently completed a new facility in Glenwood, was looking to expand his business and said the Worthington location seemed like a good fit. 

The Nature Conservancy announced last week that it has protected nearly 150 acres of prairie and wetlands adjacent to its Ordway Prairie Preserve in Pope County. The land was acquired recently under the Minnesota Prairie Recovery Project an innovative effort to conserve and manage the state’s remaining prairies.
