School report for Dist. 3, white Bear Lake: Total enrollment 32; average attendance 24; Elmer Einarson and Erling Aslakson received certificates of perfect attendance. The following attended 18 days, Nora Aal, Laura Forde and John Haugsland Sigurd I. Ramstad, teacher. 

Lats Thursday, the relatives and close friends of Miss Ida C. Dyrstad, gathered at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Dyrstad in Minnewaska township to celebrate the event which made her Mrs. Henry G. Miller. The couple will go to Saskatchewan, Canada to make their future home. Mr. Miller is a contractor and builder. 

A pretty wedding took place in the Langhei church, when Palvin O. Pederson and Valda Knutson were joined in holy bonds of matrimony. Rev. Chr. Pederson officiating. The wedding took place immediately following the morning service, so the ceremony was witnessed by the entire congregation. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Iver Knutson and the groom is the son of Olaus Pederson.

Miss Esther Olson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Olson and Mr. Bert Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Pederson, both of Blue Mounds, were married at the parsonage on March 14. The attendants were Mable Pederson and Leonard Olson. 

The following were elected at the annual village election last week : President of the council, Geo. C. Arneson; recorder, B.C. Wollan, Treasurer , Edw. S. Olson; assessor, Ole Larson; Trustee for three years, Ole L. Brevig; trustee for one year, John Overson; Justice of the peace, Wm Merrill; constable, H.W. Crandall.

Miss Ingeborg Larson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Larson of Glenwood, and Anton Wollan, were united in marriage at the home of the bride’s parents by Rev. Linnevold.

Miss Nellie Klevann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul P. Klevann of White Bear Lake and  Chester E. Christensen of Minneapolis were married at the Indherred parsonage March 12 by Rev. G. O. Forde.

The First National Bank of Starbuck reopened for business on Wednesday morning, being one of the first banks in the county to reopen, after the nation wide closing of banks. 

80 YEARS AGO

From March 18, 1943

A baby girl, Marie Elizabeth, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ingolf Kamrud Friday evening. They have two sons before. 

The Starbuck Cement Products Company has built up an enviable record in manufacturing high quality concrete products, but just recently they have gone in for manufacturing concrete feeding troughs. The machine has been set up in  the basement of the garage building and so far they have turned out several hundred troughs. 

James A. Erickson of Starbuck and Harris  V. Tessem of Cyrus were among those from Pope County called to report for active duty at Glenwood March 18. 

Mr. and Mrs. Anton Wollan celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary Saturday. 

John Overson, Ed Bingham and C.O. Pederson had some time convincing curious spectators that they were not digging for a nickel on the main street north of the Theatre Wednesday afternoon last week, or trying their hand at WPA work. The drainage main was not functioning so they had to go through the ice and blacktop to get to the manhole, to make it function properly. That they could locate the exact spot where the manhole was showed they knew their business.

Miss Beverly M. Schwendemann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Schwendemann and Marvin R. Pochardt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Pochardt of Starbuck, were married February 28 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The couple will make their home in rural Starbuck. 

Pvt. Henry I. Aslakson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ingvald Aslakson, is now serving in Korea with the 45th Infantry Division. 

Dorothy Gabrielson of Starbuck will graduate with a Provisional Elementary Certificate from St. Cloud Teacher’s College March 13. 

Mr. and Mrs. Earl Fingerson of Glenwood are the proud parents of a girl born to them Sunday. She is their first daughter and second child. 

The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Svenning was baptized Lavonne Marie at the Indherred Church Sunday. Sponsors were miss Eldred Svenning, Iver Aal and Mr. and Mrs. Lusty of Miltona.

Glenwood’s Independent School District 612 bond issue is for $695,000 for a new 14-room elementary building and remodeling the present building was approved by the voters Tuesday by 594 “Yes” votes to 395 “No” votes.

Births: A son, Jeffrey Allen to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Johnson of Moorhead March 9; a son, Dean Larry, to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Kittelson March 6; a son, Roger Lee to Dr. and Mrs. Milton Jellum Feb. 26; a son, Steven Richard to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wesen of Minneapolis March 12.

The Junior class of Starbuck High School will present their play, “It’s a Great Life” Friday, March 29. The cast of characters include Jerry Tharaldson, Gene Berg, Mark Brenden, Linda Otteson, Rebecca Barsness, Coliss Pederson, Marlys Dokken, Suzanne Landgraf, Mary Roiland, Marcus Baukol and David Bardal. Judy Hagestuen is the student director.

The third grade class of the Starbuck school has been busy making puppets and having fun with ‘em. Their teachers are Mrs. Erickson and Mrs. Lommel. Pictured in the Tribune shows a portion of them, cute aren’t they? 

Higher Bushel Guarantees for 1973 are part of this years Federal Crop Insurance Program for Pope County, announced Clarence Haberer of Morris, FCIC agent.

Shirley Anderson, art instructor at the local school has been chosen by her fellow teachers as a candidate for “Teacher of the Year” in Minnesota. 

Teachers of Excellence will be chosen from 140 candidates representing 120 communities. Honor Roll teachers will be chosen from Teachers of Excellence and finally the Teacher of the Year will be chosen. This teacher will receive a $500 scholarship and be entered in national competition.

Roger Tollefson of rural Starbuck was named the Premiere Dairy Award winner that the Annual Dairy Herd Improvement Association banquet held last week at the Minnewaska House. 

Funeral services for Rose G. Braaten, 92, were held from the Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church on Feb. 19. She is survived by one son, Arnold; and two nieces, Mrs. Tilford Jergenson and Mrs. Vernon Jergenson.

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Ellingson of St. Paul announce the birth of a son, Adam Christopher March 1. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Mile Ellingson of Starbuck.

The Lady Bucks claimed the District 22A Girls Basketball tournament with a 57-48 win over Evansville Friday. The Bucks were led by two sophomores, Jan Doty with 18 points and LaDona Anderson with 15. 

Funeral services for Mrs. Albert (Milla) Forbord, 89, were held from East Zion Lutheran Church March 4. She is survived by three sons, Adlore, Myron and Dennis, all of Benson.

The site-based management team at Cyrus Math, Science and Technology School were notified last week by Red Book’s America’s Best Schools Project that their school had been selected as one of “America’s Best Elementary Schools.” 

Former Pope County Assessor John L. Verlennich has filed a lawsuit against the Pope County Board of Commissioners for what he believes was wrongful termination.

Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Holten (Suzanne Baukol) are the parents of a son, Tanner Cody, born March 11. 

Starbuck Elementary Students of the month were Mark Mitchell, Jamie Anderson, Zachery Banister, Justin Holten, Casey Boutain, Justin Holten, Casey Boutain, Paige Bangsund, Teresa Davis, Taylor Thomas, Crystal Jergenson, Katie Stammers, Jamie Chlian, Alisha Lien, Andrea Jeitz, Lucas Grant, Paul Hippe, Rebecca Ferguson and Kristen Anderson.

After 19 years of stability in the Pope County Veterans Services office, a changing of the guard is on the horizon. The Pope County Board of Commissioners Wednesday accepted the retirement notice of Veterans Services Officer Richard Mollers. Although the notice is technically effective this September, Mollers has accrued enough leave to make July 7 his last working day. 

The deadline for balancing and approving next year’s budget is getting closer and so is the decision by the Minnewaska Area Board of Education on how they will choose to balance that budget. 

At a special meeting on Tuesday evening, board members agreed on what would and would not be considered in the decision when they are faced with pairing about $1.3 million from 3002-2004 fiscal year budget.

The Cyrus City Council heard from the Cyrus Fire Department at their regular meeting on March 12. Officer Bob Tirevold told the council that for a number of years the department has been looking to do something with the building. Tirevold said the primary need for the fire hall is space. 

At the regular Starbuck city council meeting on March 11. Police Chief Jim Minion asked the council to consider the scheduled six-year replacement of the Black & White squad car.  Minion said the squad has a mileage of 97,000 miles. 

The Minnewaska Area High School activities fund received a boost on March 7. Kim Walker from Viking Coca-Cola Bottling Company presented a check for $2,867.75 to MAHS as part of the Powerade 4U program. The amount is a 25 percent increase over last year’s donation.
