Local farmers make donations to food shelf

April 18, 1963 – Setter Rexall Drug was to make its first move after 35 years in business. The store would relocate from its location on South Franklin to the former Nelson Shoe Store building on Minnesota Avenue. Henry Setter, owner of the business, said that the move would provide more space and that the only two locations were the candy case and the soda fountain. 

The Glenwood High School Laker band, under the direction of George Opheim, participated in the Dist. No. 22 band competition. One judge wrote: “You are a bunch of wonderful young people with a fine conductor. You make mistakes, as we all do, but you try awfully hard and this is the difference between your band and the others. You are now enjoying the fruits of the labor.”

April 19, 1973 – The Tribune pictured Elmer Anderson, a Lowry farmer, out in his fields, seeding the 1973 crop of wheat. The weather had been balmy, following a winter of unusually light snow cover, and farmers appeared to be ahead of schedule with their fieldwork.

Members of the Glenwood Lions were busy with their annual pancake breakfast. Proceeds would go toward the purchase of a new sign for the Chalet Campground. Pictured in the Tribune stirring up pancakes were Lions Harlan Long, Judd Peterson, John Hanson, Gus Gasser, Herb Marquardt, Clayton Sandvig, Vince Thompson, Bill Zubke and Brick Vold. 

A national meat boycott was having little effect on Glenwood’s grocery stores. Don Bishop, manager of Glenwood’s Super Valu, and Clem’s Fairway owner, Clem Stumpf, both said they noticed little or no effect. Both also noted that meat sales were “generally down this time of year anyway.”

April 21, 1983 – Two Starbuck young men were killed when their car rolled over near Cyrus. The deaths were the first highway fatalities in the county. Two other young men were injured in the crash.

The Minnewaska Showstoppers were staging a benefit show. Among those participating were Erma Sivertson, Nettie Hustad, Clem Stumpf, Rita Pederson, Charlies Hellie, Vic Vatthauer, Dick Sivertson, Neil Witikko, Bruce Fingerson, Melissa Lang, Wally Rajdl, Michele Fronk, Evelyn Oeltjen, Ralph Hanson, Duffy Morton, Amy Anderson and a list of others. The event was staged to earn money for the group’s annual production during Waterama.

The Glenwood High School declam team finished as runners-up in regional competition. Participants included Shanon Endres, Jan Chalupnik, Kris Bremseth, Tricia Butler, Sara Larson, Jodi Blair, Jill Knutz, Kathy Morris and Tracy Barsness. 

April 18, 1993 – In an attempt to preserve the lakes in Pope County, volunteers had been measuring the clarity of 14 lakes in the county. The Pope County Environmental Service Office released the results of the reading taken during 1992 with the use of a Secchi disk, an eight-inch circular disk which is lowered in to the water. According to the 1992 data, Lake Linka in Gilchrist Township was the clearest lake in the county.

Building a nature trail was to be the focus of the fourth annual observance of Earth Day on Saturday, May 1 in Pope County. The national observance of Earth Day was April 22. Vicky Peterson, a science teacher at MAHS who had organized the annual celebration, urged families to participate in the day.

April 21, 2003 – Eight lanes of bowling-related equipment from Hillside Lanes in Glenwood have found their way to Florida. Former Hillside owners, Gene and Laura Wright, sold the lanes over Ebay for $12,000. The lanes are now being installed in the Sumter County Youth Center in Bushnell, Fla.

Minnewaska Area Schools formally approved releasing 43 employees last Tuesday, although some may be offered partial positions or get their jobs back. In a fairly somber moment near the end of the meeting, board chair, Tom Beuckens read the names which included 13 non-tenured teaching staff, 11 tenured teachers and 19 non-certified staff.

April 22, 2013 – The Pope County Corn & Soybean Growers donated $400 worth of Soyfoods to the Pope County Hearts and Hands food shelf in celebration of National Soyfoods Month.

This year’s late spring has raised havoc with the spring sports schedule for Minnewaska Area Schools. Activities Director Bill Mills told the Minnewaska Area Schools board of education last week that, as of last Friday, over 50 events had not been able to be held as scheduled and that by the end of this week that number would climb to 70.

The Minnewaska School Board is on track to hire a new superintendent by the end of April, according to information from the district last week. The board and hiring committee conducted interviews last week of five candidates for the superintendent position that will be open after this school year when current Supt. Greg Ohl retires.
