Six of our young boys of Blue Mounds were out shooting gophers Sunday. They exterminated 300 of them. 

The wind is whispering that Dan Cupid is again active and weddings are brewing near Lake Emily.

Miss Ruth Charlotte Estensen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Estensen of Stevens County and Lloyd L. Christianson, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Christianson of Granite Falls, were united in marriage at the Lutheran parsonage in Cyrus on April 12 by Rev. A.G. Quammen.

A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Nels Opheim last Friday. 

Funeral services will be held Saturday for Sven A. Rosten of Minnewaska township. He is survived by his wife, Ellen, and three children, Mrs. A.P. Branea of Glenwood, A.S. Rosten of Minnewaska and Mrs. Mens Olsrud of Kalispell, Montana.

A notice from the Mayor of Starbuck, Geo. C. Arneson: All stores are requested to close on Arbor Day and all the people are urged to devote the day to tree planting, both at their homes and in public areas. Weather permitting, there will be a program at the park in the middle of the day. After this program, the tree planting will continue.

Miss Ida Sandvig, adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Klevenberg and Mr. Norval Ronnie, son of Mrs. T.R. Ronnie of Walden, were married at the Cyrus Lutheran parsonage on Sunday, April 9, Rev. A.G. Quammen officiating. They were attended by Miss Selma Ronnie and Mr. Emil Klevenberg.

Miss Ethel Ahill of Hibbing and Mrs. Erling Dyrstad, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Dyrstad of Minnewaska Township, were united in marriage at Duluth on April 8, Rev. Barr officiating. They will make their home at Black Duck, Minn. where the groom is teaching.

The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Maanum was baptized at the West Zion church on Sunday by Rev. Palmer. She received the name Clarice Geraldine. 

The following are some of the bargains offered at the various stores in Starbuck on April 21 and 22: oranges, large size, per dozen 17¢; Men’s work shoes, $1.29; 1 can pink salmon, 9¢; supermix outside white paint, 1 gallon, $2.25.

Funeral services for Mrs. Louis Ronnie, 74, were held at St. John’s Church on April 15. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. John Lybeck of Cyrus.

The following were confirmed at Fron Lutheran Church Sunday: Hilma Aaberg, Clarice Braaten, Marlys Gaarder, Janette Nordstrom, Joanne Nordstrom, Ruth Samuelson, Jean, Torgerson, Christopher Aaberg, Julius Aaberg, Archie Dokken, Norma Engh, Lyle Hanson, Lyn Dale Hendrickson, James Hendrickson, Robert Olson, Roland Peterson and Merle Shippey. Members of the adult confirmation class were: Mrs. Mary D. Anderson, M. Louis Emahiser, Carl Engh, LeRoy Halvorson, Albert Jackson, Mrs. Helen A. Johnson, Edwin Olson, Orville Olson, Agnes Peck, Lee Allen Peck, Orville Sorenson and G. Clifford Shippey, Sr. 

Mander Lloyd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Thompson and Larry Carmen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Braaten, were both baptized at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Thompson April 16. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Braaten, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Thompson, Tina Aaberg and LeRoy Aaberg.

Rodger Earl, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Dokken was baptized at East Zion Church Sunday. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Emil Dokken, Edwin Gjerdingen and Verna Gjerdingen.

Mr. and Mrs. Ole Stangeland received the announcement of a new grandson, William Michael, born April 17 to Mr. and Mrs. Wm Briest (nee Naomi Stangeland) of Seattle, WA.

Funeral services for Ole N. Jellum, 86, were held at Indherred Lutheran Church April 15. He is survived by the following children: Frederick and Mrs. Otto (Nettie) Dalen.

The following will be confirmed Sunday at East Zion Lutheran Church: Sharon Marla Pederson, Lavonne Lyndale Berg, Gerald Dean Dokken, Dale Chester Pederson, Daryle Maanum Velde and Norma Ione Erickson.

A boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hoplin of Lowry on April 23.

Orrine Patricia Barsness and Norma Ione Nali will be confirmed Sunday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Miss Vallory Peterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chester F. Peterson, Starbuck, is one of the six finalists named by the student body at Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, for May Festival Queen. Vallory is a senior at Dana College, majoring in psychology.

Students from Starbuck who made the Dean’s List for the winter quarter at the University of Minnesota, Morris, were Ronald Carlson, Sylvia Opdahl and Robert Ophaug.

Robert Scott Brenden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Brenden has been accepted for admission to the University of Minnesota, Morris, in September 1963. He will major in business administration.

Sixty-five youngsters started kindergarten classes at the Starbuck School Monday. Mrs. Paul Billehus is teaching the four-week session of classes.

The Starbuck Creamery Company held their annual meeting Thursday evening at the local theatre building. The annual report to that group showed that the company did a little less gross business in 1972 than in 1971, a total of $1,829,204 as compared to $1,834,321 in ‘71.

Mrs. Paul Pederson, Benson, was elected as the new president of the Morris Conference American Lutheran Church Women at their annual spring convention held at Fron Lutheran Church Thursday. She succeeds Mrs. Stan Behl, Starbuck, who has held that position the past four years. 

Wes Hanson, owner of the local telephone company, announced this week that plans call for spending $175,000 this summer to improve local service. The improvements will include additional dialing equipment and approximately forty miles of underground cable. When this 40 miles is laid, Starbuck Telephone Company will have all its lines underground. Work is expected to start in May.

From April 20, 1983

Two young Starbuck men were killed in a one-car accident Saturday night. Killed were Michael Burnham, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Burnham and Robert Gregersen, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Gregersen. Also involved in the accident, but not injured were Randy Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Anderson, and Milo Holte. Joint funeral services will be held Wednesday (today) at Fron Lutheran Church. Burnham is survived by his wife, Deanna; his parents and one brother, Greg and one sister, Barbara. Gregersen is survived by his parents and one brother, Steve.

Jason Branby, son of Jerry and Alyne Branby has been accepted at Southwest State University for the fall quarter 1983. His planned major field of study is speech communications.

The Cyrus Boosters 4-H club took top honors with their “Take Four” skit at the annual Pope County Share-the-Fun night last Friday.

Funeral services for William Kleven, 85, were held from the Glenwood Lutheran Church on April 9. He is survived by one son, Ernest and his wife, Hazel of Alexandria.

Funeral services for Douglas Erdahl, 48, were held at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson April 10.  He is survived by his wife, Barbara; one son, Mark Jerome, of Paynesville and one daughter, Marcia Jane of Benson. 

Gerald and Marvel Olson have been named Lowry Citizens of the Year at a banquet held Thursday night, sponsored by the Lowry Lions Club.

Starbuck Elementary Students-of-the-Month are Jill Foslien, Tammy Olson, Aaron Anderson, Lance Wesen, Heidi Solvie, Ryan Valek, Joe Hammer, Megan Hanson, Amy Rooney, Bobbi Jo Nelson, Apryl Anderson, Kelly Hendrickson, Lucas Pepple, Kattie Gullickson and Amanda Amundson.

Jennifer Lindquist, daughter of Ron and Ann Lindquist of Starbuck and a junior at Minnewaska Area High School, was recently named president of the Minnesota Association of Student Councils – Western division.

The Starbuck Area Chamber of Commerce met on April 9 to clean up several issues surrounding the city map, Heritage Days and the Memorial Day weekend raffle. At the board’s last meeting, it was decided that the Memorial Day weekend raffle would be a little different than years past.

A Lowry native, former mayor and long-time Lowry businessman was named the Lowry Lion’s Citizen of the Year last week. Glen Lundblad, owner of Lowry Transfer, received recognition for his selection at a special dinner at the Lowry community Center last Thursday. 

A new face and a youthful energy will hit customers of Minnewaska Lawn Applications this season. Twenty-one-year-old Chris Hoffert has purchased the business from founder Earl Stottler.

The Pope County HRA/EDA held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Bay Meadows Townhomes Project on April 17. HRA/EDA Chair Luan Johnsrud, Board member Larry Kittelson and Starbuck resident Audrey Amundson spoke at the event thanking all who helped make the project happen. Several came to watch the ceremony. 

The Pope County Housing and Redevelopment Authority/Economic Development Authority (HRA/EDA) met for just over an hour on April 17. Board member Lori Vaadeland informed the board that City of Starbuck will be doing a street project at 5th and Wollan Street, which is scheduled to begin sometime after Heritage Days in July. She said there are some that would be affected on 5th Street. 

“It was accidental,” Hanley Mortenson said. “What started as a pursuit of piecing together 8mm films of family get-togethers to preserve the history was cut short. Unfortunately, due to age and deterioration a lot of the film was not able to be recovered.”
